looks like it's just me and you left on this but yeah the first part of your post is essentialy correct. The part about hitting? No, hitting is way harder, IMO. than learning to pitch at the HS level. BTW I'm going through this process right now with my 15YO son. A SS that is learning to pitch. In a few appearances he's about as good as anyone on his teams. Of course he pitched some in youth ball but never was considered by me as a real pitcher. Now I'm not so sure. We're working to see...

. Bulldog , your story brings back memories to me. Twisted memories, I think. In our Econ 101 class we had a text book that used an economic example to open each chapter. Our book featured water pipes and drive-in movie pants as recurring items in all of these examples. Even I thought it was odd that the author would match up plumbing supplies with some sort of task specific clothing. How strange? I guess I wasn't hip because I didn't figure it out until after the class was completed that...

Bulldog I am sure that they work together at MGH as well as with the Sox.. Here are their official titles off of the Red Sox website: Head Athletic Trainer/Asst. So needless to say I feel like his rehab is in good hands . And yes I did totally screw up the spelling of his name originally (Wahl vs Waugh)!!

Did you see the white hat trailing behind saying something that looked like "NO, NO, NO"? The rule is the rule so I can't blame a ref for calling it. Remember a few years ago some team lost a game because of a flag like this. Best thing to do is get rid of the rule. Let them celebrate as long as it doesn't get pointed at the other team or it's fans. Or have the players get smart enough to hand the ball to the official do some high fives and head to the bench. Then once behind the bench bring...

TPM is dead on. And the biggest thing you have going for you is that he's a lefty. Just talking from personal experience and not bragging in any way because your story sounds 'very' familiar, my son is a 2011 mid 80s LHP who gets people out with three pitches and walks few. He's not a towering figure on the hill at 6' but he's known as a bulldog on the mound because no matter the situation he competes and he keeps the ball in the strike zone. And coaches love that. After seeing his breaking...

Who is assuming responsibility for injury? School? If this is under your private insurance it could be a protocol they require to consider operation, as TJS may not be considered necessary. If the school were handling it, they's get it done. Just a thought as to why he wants to rehab other than what bulldog has suggested.

That's something to think about too TPM! I hadn't really, but it's possible that your personal insurance won't cover it. If the injury occurred during a school practice, it's possible that the athletic department's insurance may cover it. The thing is that at least where I went to school, the athletic department's insurance was secondary. It did not kick in until the athlete's personal insurance made payment. If this is the case, have the kid talk to the team's athletic trainer. S/he would...

Since we have a winner, I'll reply to this. Nobody has an option regarding balks. Depending on the circumstances a balk may be enforced or disregarded, but the outcome is determined by events. Basically, the balk is disregarded if 1) the pitcher makes a wild pickoff throw, and all runners reach at least their advance base 2) there is a pitch and the batter acquires 1st and all other runners reach at least their advance base. Otherwise the balk is enforced. Example: R1, R3, a balk but the...

For pitchers my comment is as accurate and is what Coach McFarland at JMU believes. Considering he is among a handful of pitching gurus and who has published an incredible book about pitching, I'd say it is an accurate comment. I am sure he knows more than you and I put together. However your advice to the OP is sound in that not everything you read is accurate, whether it be on the internet or elsewhere. Also to the OP, get a quality band such as the Jaeger band. Bulldog, Don't drink the cool-aid! Check out the picture below posted of Cy-Fair. Stadiums like this (and like ours) are not built by fans, they are built by tax -payers in bond elections. Our football team doesn't even come close to paying for their facilities, equipment and such from selling tickets...lol. That old argument holds water in college, but not in high school where tax payers provide stadiums nicer than many college programs!

Thank you, it's my third, though being my sons first, does make the lil fellar kinda special. And I believe Bulldog got the first correct response. Though lost a point on the "option question". Score the run, R2, 2-2 count. The OP doesn't tell us how wild the throw was, but must have been wild enough, to allow R3 to score. Not the ideal situation for a double steal (2 outs), or a squeeze play (2 strikes), only other scenario where F3 would throw home, would be, R1 going on first movement, F1...

Re: And?

Assuming a wild throw is where this thread went wrong. The throw was not wild. That's why there is no reference to that in the OP. Being the author of the OP I am confused by all the talk of a wild throw. F3 gloved the throw. That's why the umpires should have called time and enforced the balk.

That is your opinion and every one is entitled to their own. I personally feel it is beneficial. Even without getting into the lactic acid talk I think it is beneficial not only to keep my pitchers in shape, but the running will also help to increase blood flow which will cause an increased level of white blood cells to act as a clearing for unwanted metabolites in the area of micro trauma in the arm. This is my opinion and it has worked for me this long.

Re: Question

Jimmy03 ·
It makes sense. It's one of the few rules designated to avoid delay of game and MLB umpires have been instructed to enforce all such rules. When the manager leaves the dirt circle (mound) he is to proceed directly to his dugout. In the old, old days, he would hesitate and wander back and forth, delaying the game, usually waiting for a reliever to get ready. This fixed that.

Re: Question

They do not have discretion enforcing that rule. Imagine if Adrian had tried to ignore it. Then Bochy would have ended up ejected for what started out as a violation by Mattingly. What sense does that make?

Re: Question

They know the rule. They called the violation. As for how it was enforced, perhaps Adrian didn't consider his "no, no, no" as a warning. I don't know. I would have, but I am not a MLB umpire.

Bulldog, Depends on the showcases and how they were run. Most pitchers don't throw many innings in showcases and are pitch per batter and # of batters limited during the showcase. There is a potential problem with not getting an extended rest period at some point in the year, but that doesn't mean there isn't some other time of year when a pitcher could rest. Here's a couple others from that one, throwing a pitcher 3 innings on back to back days throwing mostly sliders during a spring break...

Lodi already mentioned the Madison Mallards. I think there is also a team in the Appleton area (Timber Rattlers affiliated with Brewers - Class A) about 2 1/2 hours north of Whitewater.

Re: Is the crack in the metal bat monopoly finally here?

RJM ·
This is what I want to see. I want the decision to be at the conference, district or state level by people who oversee high school sports/baseball, not the government. The injury statistics don't support a ban on metal. The bat companies will be at the hearings. If wood is "chosen" there isn't a hearing. Let's go back to wood because it's the way the game should be played. A subsequent benefit may be less serious injuries. But we don't know for sure.

I agree with Bulldog and Coach -- if it was just simply a case of a kid (or 7) who needed college exposure leaving to play on a select team that would be acceptable to me. It happens every year. What bothers me is this feeling that things are being done behind my back that are dishonest (in terms of the money involved) and potentially hurtful to other parents and players within my program.

I agree with what you posted. But if the original poster had a team with say 6-7 good ball players and many more that need a lot more training / instruction, how does putting those 6-7 in the same boat help? Every player is different. And they need different areas and levels of instruction. One coach can't do that. Two can't either. You need an organized, concentrated, GROUP effort to get it done. And trying to "stand your ground" and make players play for you during Summer / Fall is not the...

Depends on the objectve. If he wants to know if he was right about the rule, he calls. If he was guessing the ump was wrong at the game and now doesn't care if he was right or wrong...no need to call. If he wants to protest and it is allowed. He calls. If he wants to protest and it isn't allowed he doesn't call. But in that scenario, the protest wouldn't have been heard on the field either. Leave the rulebook in the dugout.

I have worked with many different partners at many levels up to high school ball and not once did we try to show up anyone. I said at the "insistence of the Managers." I was referring to the lobbying for this practice by ML managers, and the owners. It matters not who initiated it on the field. It is unfortunate but umpires miss calls that impact the outcome of the play. And, these are not "fixable" situations. What do you do with the runners? In this case, it easy to say runners at 2B and 1B. In many cases, that can't be determined. So, it is easier to make all plays universally "unfixable" than to attempt to pick 'n choose which ones can and can't be. If it can't be "fixed", why think about asking for help anyway?
