Steve Springer, I talk about you all the time. Glad you are here. What a valuable addition to this site. Lots of "Old Timers" here have sons who are in college or pros who have your CD and listen regularly. Folks, listen to this guy... he knows what he is talking about!

It has been a long time since I listened to the original. Not a huge difference but as I recall, Q2 has more up to date and better anecdotes that drive home his points. Q2 is a bit smoother also. Springer does such a great job of making it feel like he is right there talking to you.

I agree that " Heads Up Baseball " is a classic. Springer 's original CD and his V2 the DVD is "awesome". I highly recommend " Sixty Feet Six Inches " by Bob Gibson and Reggie Jackson . You get both sides of the game, hitting and pitching. Back & forth on topics like "stuff", "velocity", etc. Two HOF players describe their feelings. They don't always disagree. They also cover preparation, what they ate, off-season approach, conditioning, etc. It's unique, funny and informative. " Out of...

Well now, is that double digits for Springer now? Jesuit called in the bottom 4th, due at first to lightning then it started RAINING. We just joked about it. I want to bring up jesuitbaseball's question again, their coach told us that we could just start the game where it got delayed. I guess maybe it can be flexible as to the coaches whether or not they want to start it over...different case with the Marcus/Coppell game though, two top teams in that district...the Coppell coach certainly...

Second time this season, that I know of, Denton's Preston Springer has hit a HR to put Denton and head for the win. Congrats to this young man. From the Denton Newspaper: Senior third baseman Preston Springer belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to help Denton rally for a 6-2 victory over Denton Ryan on Tuesday night at Bronco Field. The win gave Denton sole possession of first place in District 5-4A

Congratulations on the coverage Matt. Coach Mark Johnson and staff at SHSU have signed an impressive group of pitchers including Matt, Zach Neal from Flower Mound, Brent Powers from Richardson Pearce, Jerad Stevens from the Woodlands and Cody Springer from Montgomery. Should be a lot of fun. Eat 'em up Kats!

On SLC: Because they pour all their money into football. Actually it might be a city ordinance against those types of lights in a residental area, but not sure on that. The Plano school districts didn't have them until last year and I think that was a matter of until we can light them all (money) then none get lighted. On P. Springer: keep pitching to him I want to see him set a new record at Denton, how cool would that be.

njbb- No offense but your analogy sucks. You are talking about the first picks of a draft that were freaks and .001% of the baseball population. Was your son Arod or D. Young? My mother could pick those guys out! I've had six first-rounders from my program and 14 big-leaguers. Looking back at when they were in their mid-teens (much easier to judge than if they are 8 or 9), they all displayed talent but were not neccessarily our best players. As a matter of fact, I've had better players not...

Stats -- one more clarification. While we did not track 'the best pitch' statistically, we used it as a way to analyze every at bat. Historically, the at bats where he took 'the best pitch' looking were not as successful as the times he swung at it. Now, simply swinging at that pitch does not assure success because we had more than one discussion about the weak ground out on a change up because he fouled of the fb on the pitch before. Ultimately, you still need to be a good enough hitter to...

I wasn’t at all trying to “call you out”, but I can understand how you might take it that way, and apologize if that’s how you took it. I would gladly do that, if I had the data to do it with. Evidently you haven’t read enough of my stuff to know I don’t believe in charting pitch types or locations. At least without the help of the technology the ML uses. Because of that, I have never, nor will I ever gather or analyze that kind of data. Others can do it all they wish, but I’ll just stick to...

Re: Difference between JV and Freshmen in batting average

As Steve Springer says the batting average is E V I L. Forget about it. Hit the ball hard, stay inside it and everything else will take care of itself. A player can tear it up in Freshmen and JV ball, but when he gets to Varsity and is seeing upper 80's pitching and serious breaking balls the game changes. Our best hitter from JV is up with the Varsity team this year and he is doing OK, but his swing is too long and he will have to go back to the drawing board this summer and rework his...

Exciting times Josh. We hopefully have some really big names coming on the show in January and thanks in part to Josh and some of our esteemed past guests for helping us like Coach Bill Hutton and Steve Springer. We are building our program one listener at a time. Each time we get a guest, it leads to more guest opportunities and I believe our guests are enjoying being on the show. There are not many baseball-only shows out there and we have a good one that is starting to grow imho.

I'm with Sdlefty, I would say that Quality At Bat is the most important. As Steve Springer says "get inside the ball and hit it hard somewhere, the rest you have no control over" As far as strike out rate this can be very deceiving, if it was a QAB, then yes, but if it is a weak grounder and an unproductive out then no. My son has a very low strike out rate (college - 10%) and the coaches are suggesting that he takes a few more aggressive swings "some times" and accepts a few more...

Re: BA by number of pitches

stats4Gnats.....I was not trying to start a QAB debate, although the problem with GC is that not every coach that measures QAB uses the same criteria. GC is fairly arbritrary and therefore probably not as relevant although our HSV coach did look at it. You could certainly justify a more precise and rewarding calculation. I was simply curious about the outcomes by pitch, so I was envisioning a fairly simple spreadsheet/report where the leftmost column is the pitch where the ball was put in...

well, that is what I was looking for and confirmed what I expected. My thesis was that the deeper into the AB you got the more it favored the pitcher, although I expected more of a bell curve where the trend went back in the batter's favor but that is not true from this data. If I did the math properly you get: <colgroup><col span="2" width="64" /></colgroup> Pitch BA 1st 0.397 2nd 0.380 3rd 0.312 4th 0.245 5th 0.236 6th 0.216 7th 0.258 8th 0.227 9th 0.188 >9 0.200 So,...

I agree with him that BA is definitely not the BEST stat, but its far from meaningless. One just has to be careful about how stats...

The best source on mental hitting is CD by Steve Springer. Quality At Bats. Much more direct and practical advice than Dorfman. This will clear your head, stop focusing on batting average, and focus on hitting the inside of the ball hard.
