Leader or divider?

Iowamom23 ·
Over the years coaches have told my son they expect him to be a leader. Particularly when he catches, they have encouraged him to help direct other players, encourage players etc. (he's a sophomore in high school, just playing spring ball). This weekend, batter hit hard to the outfield, second baseman was cutoff as runner headed to third. Second baseman, a friend of my son's, caught the ball from outfield, and made a very fast and very high throw to third that missed totally. Runner went...

A Player's Confidence

We all know the peaks and valleys in competitive sports. We have even heard pro's and coaches say they try and stay on a median plane no matter how it's going. Confidence is derived from hard work and utilized in specific moments of time. Confidence has purpose and comes through preparation for the task...

Avoiding abusive coaches

Hi folks -- In conducting your recruiting campaign, I'm just wondering if anyone could offer any advice on how to avoid coaches who are continually abusive verbally (or even physically)? I'm guessing the only way really is to ask around, including former and current players, etc. My impression is that too many coaches are still allowed somehow to get away with this crap. Thanks very much, and happy U.S. Independence Day and Canada Day to everyone? -- John in Toronto.

Bulldog 19 ·
Well you know Fungo, I had a response typed out here when I realized it isn't entirely true. On one hand, I don't like many of the messages being expressed on uniforms, eye black, etc. I don't think the baseball (or football) field is the place to do that. But on the other hand, we wore a #50 decal on our football helmets my senior year for a teammate killed in a car accident. In the NFL, they are currently wearing the GU on their helmets. And the list goes on and on. I have to wonder if...

Bulldog, Great point and I think we will see this issue grow into a national debate. This even sounds cold to me but I thought the Alzheimer pins worn by the Fox broadcasters were pushing the edge but on the other hand I appreciate the recognition given Gene Upshaw (GU) or wearing the number of a deceased teammate. Hard to explain ---- Maybe I wouldn't call it "right" or "wrong" --- I see it as appropriate or inappropriate.

That was my point. I don't know if they would be going nuts, but I wonder if they would be as understanding to those types of messages. It can get ridiculous if left unchecked. The NBA began enforcing a tucked-in shirt rule a few years back. Jim McMahon was fined by the NFL for wearing messages on his headband. How about an offensive political message like: "Hitler was Right" or "Assassinate Obama" I think it is better to do away with the messages rather than carve out exceptions. As far as...

Re: 16u pitcher launched a channel to help younger kids learn how to pitch. Needs your support and input.

Sirloindameaty ·
I guess the simple answer is that younger pitchers can be more relatable to kids than a pro. Also, not many pros have a Free detailed program online that teaches kids how to go from t-ball to HS Varsity level. Possibly because pro's are either busy or want to be paid in some way for their time. Granted there is no revolutionary information being relayed. Most of the content is "best practices" type of stuff. But, Good information can come from anyone. A lot of the pitching instruction videos...

I agree with you -- good content is good content, regardless of the age or experience of the presenter. Certainly pro pitchers bring more credibility to the table, but they are not necessarily good coaches and communicators. I think the video you linked to is pretty good and I hope the kid keeps it up.

Sirloindameaty ·
@JCG Thanks for the reply. I think that if kids took the time and effort to engage in positive projects like this, it should be encouraged. There are enough people already on the other side of the equation giving criticism. How many pro's are teaching online and opening themselves up for criticism?

It is really cool to see a young man trying to give back to the community and the game! Creating a YouTube channel for pitching will bring value to many who may not have the resources to secure professional instruction. Feedback for improvement: 1) Watch a few YouTube videos on Camera presence. He does a great job of showing enthusiasm, but some thought should go into the viewer's experience as well. Meaning, all the unnecessary movement takes away from the viewer's ability to focus on the...

@Scott Muroe Thanks for the feedback and the suggestions. I feel like your post is a good example of how forums like this should be used. Meaningful and constructive feedback is not always easy to come by on forums. Thank you! I'll pass the sentiment along. Why can't a 16 year old be an effective coach? Who knows? I am certain my son could teach younger kids to pitch better than a lot of coaches out there. I do just want to put one thing out there. I live in Texas. If my HS son gives lessons, helps someone out with baseball or similar and gets paid for it, it is a UIL violation and if you play on a high school team all of the games can (and most likely will) be forfeited. It happened here a couple years ago. ...

I just took a quick glance at this from work with no audio. My observation may be useful from this different perspective. The video is 4:18 long. There are three short 5 second action clips (two of them being identical). The remaining 4+ minutes are video of a guy talking. I don't even know what the topic was but kids young and old require a much higher ratio of visual demonstration and less talk. Even if he was just talking about what he was going to be presenting in the future, still need...
