PBR Cancelled? No refund?

dialedin ·
Has anybody had any experience with PBR cancelling a 2 day showcase the day before it is to start? So far, they are offering a "credit" or trying to send us to an out of state tournament. We did not cancel, they did. So shouldn't our money be refunded? Has anybody else dealt with this issue? We thought PBR was a well known showcase?

PBR / video / timing?

I'd appreciate the benefit of the Board's collective wisdom on a couple of things please: 1) My son's travel baseball organization is holding a PBR "scout day" soon. (No games, but will time running, measure pitchers' velocity, etc.) In general, are PBR's online profiles a resource that college coaches trust / use? Even as a newbie, I know about PerfectGame. I have heard of PBR, but really know nothing about them. Not asking folks to badmouth anyone--just wondering how much value a PBR...

2020 Grad- 3B/RHP

Kyle31 ·
Hello All, I am the parent of a 2020 3B/RHP. He is 6'1 220. He plays for a top 10 ranked 15u team in the country and we are from md. We recently attended a PBR Showcase (Fantastic event that was well run with lots of talent.) He recorded an exit velo of 86 off a tee and threw 78 across the infield. He sits 76-80 off the mound and tops 82. He is pretty slow running a 7.8 60 and 4.6 Home-1st. We were wondering if he is on track to go d1 which is his goal. Do you all have any workouts to get...

I will respond regarding the video... A good video is quite useful to many in the recruiting process, depending (among other things) on your ability to get in front of targeted schools in person. Putting together a good video is not an easy task. $100 is cheap. However, from what I've seen, when you get a video done as part of a group deal, it usually turns out to be sub-par. Video shots are limited. I would compare this to getting private instruction vs going to a team practice. In the team...

PBR here in Ohio is very good. Looks like you're in NC, so I can't speak specifically about the PBR program there, as they are run by different people in different states. The owner of PBR in Ohio is very well connected with college coaches and does a great job of getting coaches to attend their events here. My son made quite a few contacts from the PBR events he attended....and those were 4 -5 years ago. PBR has grown a lot since then. When we attended, they weren't expensive. As you said,...

I cannot answer the video question, I do not know enough about your son, and without seeing him, I still would not have a clue, to tell you if that is worth while. The Value of PBR really depends on your state and who owns the Franchise. In Ohio it is run by a fellow that does a very good job. As per my sons old college coach it has allowed schools from outside the area to come in and poach guys that he would only have to compete with other local colleges for. I see you are from NC, so you...

I can't say about the individual events. PBR Future Games is one of the most recruited events for uncommitted juniors that is offered. But it is invite only. I have asked a few college coaches and it is one of the websites they check, if they check. But they also said it is not the determining factor. They do not rely on it but it is a reference.

If your son can hit 83 MPH that is great especially for a LHP. You would be surprised with lefty velos. A lot of college pitchers that are lefties throw mid 80's. I believe your son will be getting looks very soon.

In Ohio, I believe PBR's cancellation policy (regardless of reason for the cancel) is a full credit to be used at a future PBR event. Nothing I'm aware of dictated what future event, just that it would be a credit rather than a refund. May vary state to state, but that has been my experience.

In NY it's a credit as well, though I've never seen them cancel an event like that.

No way. Unless it was cancelled for weather they really need to give money back. Put the pressure on them and they will refund. You can't cancel my order the day before it was supposed to arrive and give me store credit.

That's how we felt about it too. It's not cancelled due to weather. It states a "scheduling conflict". Sorry, but that's not our fault. And there's nothing else even remotely the same anytime soon. The offer was for us to go out of state to another showcase... a one day showcase on a Sunday.

Yes, if the event was cancelled due to a scheduling conflict, that is not your error or your problem and absolutely you should get a $ refund (not credit refund). I suppose a cancellation due to weather could be treated differently (as long as the customer is made aware of the policy). But this cancellation is not due to weather it is due to human error. I'm surprised that they won't issue a payment refund - doesn't sound right.

In poking around, I could not find a policy for GA specifically. Many states seem to have similar policies to that of Ohio (even though they do not call out whether PBR cancels an event or the player). With that said, I did find a policy in Kentucky that does call out what happens if PBR cancels for reasons other than weather. Just to clarify on the credit card chargeback option, of which I am quite familiar with from my professional experience. You need to first reach out to the vendor and request a full refund due to their failure to deliver you the service you paid for. Note that the event was cancelled by them, not due to weather. Be sure to do this in writing (e-mail will suffice). Ask for the full refund (say you are not able to use it elsewhere) and then get their response in writing. If they respond in the...

I always assumed that the policy was full credit if the player couldn't make it. It's a completely different thing if PBR itself cancels, IMO. Very surprised to hear this. Up here in the upper midwest they have a good rep...I'll have to ask about this one.

I have a quite a bit of experience with PBR in Ohio.....they were one of the first PBR states....and are run by good guys and if they cancelled an event, I doubt you would have any issue getting a refund if that's what you wanted. If an event is cancelled due to weather, or a kid backs out, they still have quite a bit of expense, so I can see them offering a credit.....but that's not the case here. The event never happened, I'd expect a refund if that's what you wanted.

I have also requested a refund for what I am pretty sure is the same event and have not received a response. "Scheduling conflict" sounded to me like they didn't have enough participants. I am going to email one more time and then challenge it through my credit card issuer. I don't care what the fine print on your website says (and I did not find anything), you don't get to cancel an event and keep the money.

Yeah, we definitely would not expect a refund if we had to cancel or even if the weather caused a cancellation. What they offered you is what they are offering us. A credit. And so far, the communication has been lacking. We will continue to reach out before taking any additional measures. I just want to throw it out there that PBR was very involved in my son's recruiting. They acted as a liaison when coaches want to speak to my son before Sept 1 junior year (Hey Jack, please call coach X) and they reached out to coaches on his behalf throughout his recruiting, even though we didn't attend many events (I think 2, plus Futures which was free). My point in bringing this up is to be careful in burning any bridges. If you think you will be attending a future event, a credit may...

How could it be construed that we are burning bridges when we are out a significant amount of money and just want it to be refunded? Again, this was not weather related and we didn't cancel. I don't know of any other business where someone would be fearful of "burning bridges" by asking for a refund. I would hope and expect that nobody at PBR would find this to be an odd request nor would I think they would blackball a player because of it. A credit does not serve us well at all ... we need...

My son had several sessions with a running "specialist". Took down his time immediately. The tips for starts and where to position arms/hand, etc...can help tremendously. Some have recommended a session or two with the high school track coach which may help. Does your son play varsity yet? When he does, that is the time to showcase, if he has something to showcase.

Those are certainly solid numbers for a 2020 grad all around. The key will be getting an eval from a coach to see if they think it's the 6'1/220 that is the cause of the numbers, or if it's the 6'1/220 plus the skill set that is the cause of the numbers. What I'm talking about is the magic crystal ball of projections. Do his skills project out to develop into a D1 player? That can't be answered from stats alone. The stats right now are not D1. However, that does not mean he can't progress...

Your son sounds like a pretty talented player. As far as D1 baseball goes , For a 2020 it's about working to improve the skill set, staying healthy and doing well in the classroom. D1 ball will show up if he's compatible at that level. THEY will let you know. As far as foot speed, my son didn't really have great speed until he spent a summer at UCLA working w/ a track coach. As far as D1 qualifications go it's subjective to the school or conference the school plays in. USC recruits a...

My son had numbers similar to what you posted when he was 15U. Major difference was he was 6'2" at the time and about 175 pounds. He continued to develop, but gave up pitching. In the end he attracted the attention of mid to low level D1 coaches and many, D2, D3 and NAIA coaches. In the end he made the decision to not play college baseball. This decision was made prior to the summer between Jr and Sr HS years which is the major recruiting year, so we are not 100% certain where he would have...

Going to add one more thing, start looking into how to make a recruiting video. Some are way more effective then others. For the most part its not what you think. No splash screens, no music, no subtitles, no game video. For the most part it should be a series of quick cuts of him taking BP, taking grounders, and pitching. Video should be no more then 2 to 3 minutes. Many schools that my son was in contact with asked for him to send video.

Finding the best hitting, fielding, and pitching instruction will reap dividends. Make sure your son works with trainers dialed into strength moves appropriate for baseball players. Great advice by others. I would add.. yes, a track coach can work on speed and running form but it would also benefit to include agility as part of the focus (most track coaches can accommodate - just be sure to bring it up). A big guy doesn't have to be straight-line fast but is much more attractive and effective if he can maximize his athleticism and move fairly well. This can also help a young athlete navigate the awkward growth stages with a bit more grace, among other performance...

Kyle31, welcome to the site! What does your son's coaching staff say about him being on track to go D1? From what you've described, it sounds to me like he's at a transition point. He could continue to be big and slow, or he could develop into big and athletic. I've seen kids his age go in both directions. If he wants to be a D1 position player, being slow is going to severely limit his options. That's going to matter much less if he pitches, but he'll still need to get much stronger to get...

A lot of your decisions should depend on where he is in his growth cycle; is he full height or will he be 6'8" and 220 in two years?I If he's full height, he should start to rearrange the bulk - which is not a quick process, but coaches will notice as his body begins to take on a different form. Also, since most boys his age do not really enjoy hard physical training, the discipline needed to rearrange his body will be a great start on a long road. As a HS freshman, most of his peers haven't...
