College Team Prospect Camp

PlayWithEffort ·
I have seen many college prospect camps advertised on various schools' web sites that are intended for a player who is interested in playing for that school getting evaluated by the school's coaching staff. I recently came across a Team Prospect Camp at a power 5 program where entire teams attend the camp and play a series of games on the campus. Day 1 consists of typical showcase and day 2 and 3 consist of 7 inning games. I know it's common to have showcase / travel teams play on college...

This seems to be a dead thread. Maybe we can revive it a little for the 2018 class? My son was at a showcase last weekend and had a great time, a pretty good showing considering it's Florida and it was very cold and sprinkly/misty the whole time - the coldest of winter days for this neck of the woods. The showcase director spoke to the boys after each day and gave them the opportunity to shake hands with all of the scouts that were there and then they were able to speak to them, in their...

Dream School or Practicality for a Rising Junior?

Midwest Mom ·
Hello, my 2019 1B/3B/P son has been invited to the Elite Camp at his dream D1 top academic college. He attended two previous camps there, the last at which both the hitting and the head coaches told him he would be hearing from them. But in looking at Perfect Game college commitments, this school already has nine 2019 commitments (none of them are 1B/3B). So, it seems like this school seriously recruiting him is a huge long shot at this point, and he has interest from a few other great D1...

Are College Camps Wort It?

baseball_swagg ·
Hey guys, had a quick question about a pretty gray area, college camps. I'm a high school pitcher, and one of my top schools emailed my coach. A few days later, I get an email to an 'Elite Prospect' camp for the same school, pretty expensive. However, if it has a legitimate value, or say recruitment chances, I will be more than glad to invest in it. Are these camps a revenue outlet, or do they actually have some recruiting value? Would my situation make it any different? There are less...

My son has done several of these youth camps and had a great time but I feel the need to point out that there was very little instruction. Most of the coaches are on the college team and all they do is walk around and throw BP.

Yes, the coaches at these camps are the players and staff from the university. However with that being said, the instruction on the drill or drills take place at the start of each station and then repetition of the drill follows. If there needs to be more instruction during the drill the coach or coaches will explain what needs to be done to try and help improve what they are working on.

Re: What happens in a bullpen session?

bacdorslider ·
From my exp. they will go through some drills, maybe a session on NCAA recruiting rules, warm up and get 15-20 pitches, fastball and any off-speed pitches he has. Most of the time they give you a schedule of what they are going to cover. Most of these are MM for the schools.

Never heard of it advertised that way. It sounds like a traditional showcase run by a school to make some cash for their program. It also brings more kids to their campus to sell the school. Remember part of what we do as coaches is promote the school to the general student /parent population. If a kid comes to the school because of exposure efforts and he doesn't play baseball it is still a plus for the school and the coach.

My son plays for a travel team that attends a couple of team showcase tournaments on D1 college campuses. They are usually referred to as "team camps". My understanding, though, is that the specific teams are invited and they are not open to just any team that wants to sign up. One of the two camps held on-field batting practice led by the college coaching staff, but there wasn't really any other showcase like "testing". They were really treated like tournaments with a lot of college scouts...

This is my experience as well. Usually not an advertised event. College coaches/RC's invite a few select travel programs to play a round robin tournament at the college site.

I have no first hand experience yet but my son might get the opportunity over the next couple of years. Actually, I think this is a much better opportunity. Some prospect camps include individuals who are invited personally by coach or RC, which is great. But they are also advertised events that are used as a money maker for assistants and the school and can have a large number of kids who sign up and show up uninvited. With that scenario, you better really stand out. With my limited exposure to the team format, it appears that the school RC or HC invites the team, knowing they are a strong...

My son's travel team played in a similar event every year. It used to be held at Temple, - now at St Joes in Philly. Really good event - they did the typical workout on the first morning- then played games. Coaches from many schools ranging from D1 to DIII attended. The interesting twist was that the teams coaches backed off and the college coaches each were assigned to coach teams. It allowed the coaches to get to know the players in the dugout and there was some great interaction. the...

I absolutely think it's a great opportunity. I am all for attending camps if you think it will help in any way. There are a lot of reasons to attend a camp, whether it's a team camp or an individual one. My son did one as a freshman to understand what coaches are looking for and to sort of work out the butterflies. It was the first time he had ever thrown a formal bullpen and I came to this board to educate myself and him on what is entailed in actually throwing a bullpen. It was a great...

Regarding the bolded text, agree with on opportunities. About the camps, I like the approach you took. I've been researching a few camps just to get educated on what is out there. While it may be a little early to showcase, you have to start somewhere at some point. I also like the fact that attending camps on a campus allows you to see the school. As a rising 9th grader, he may not be too focused on the College of Engineering or Business just yet but it does allow him to get a feel for the...

Already having nine commits in your son's class provides an indication of where he stands. It doesn't matter they haven't offered any first or third baseman. Schools select baseball talent/athletes who can be moved around to different positions. They may have made offers to five shortstops they believe can be moved to any position. Corner infielders have to be mashers to be recruited. Or a shortstop pushed to the corner on their travel team by a superior talent. It's not time to give up.

I guess it would depend on the comment you made above: "He attended two previous camps there, the last at which both the hitting and the head coaches told him he would be hearing from them." So did he hear back from the head coach or recruiting coordinator within a week or so from the prior camp? While he is not yet a Junior and there are restrictions on contact, as you noted, the school already has 9 commitments from his class. So they have clearly found a way to connect with those players.

Get in front of as many college recruiters and MLB scouts as possible. When and if they see what they want, they will be coming to you. Usually college recruiters already know whether they want someone long before the camps. Very few just show up, surprise the recruiters, and get offered. Unless you have improved tremendously from the last time you attended the camp, what will be different? The secret to being recruited by your dream school is to have many other similar schools that want...

This is brilliant. Most kids -- and parents -- would think that the schools they are interested in are the only ones they want to talk with or get in front of. But PGStaff makes a great point -- " If a bunch that saw you want you, another bunch who weren't there will also want you ."

In the high school football recruiting world, SOME kids use this strategy via social media. One Power 5 offer can turn into many just by creating a little social media buzz. I understand that football and baseball recruiting are different but the ultimate goal is the same.

Ivy coaches are no different in enticing kids to their camps. The camps are money makers. Doesn't mean that the camps are rip offs - just that there is no difference in the Ivy approach when compared to other schools. There are camps which have larger exposures to tippy top academic schools - Headfirst, Stanford, and others. That having been said, if you have the budget and the camp doesn't conflict with other baseball stuff, why not take the opportunity to check it out? Keep in mind that...

Actually there are offers made, but just like everywhere else they are all based on being able to get into school. Not sure how many look at this, but it is kind of a neat little database about recruiting. You can search for any college and see their commitments for any year. You can also click on (Colleges interested in) to see how many PG players are showing interest to that college along with other colleges they are interested in. I used Harvard below... While I usually agree with PG, any player who believes that they have any kind of a binding Ivy commitment before they end the junior year is wishing and hoping. While coaches have a feel for their school's admission policies, no coach can predict a decline in grades or not achieving a particular score. (And, since there is no margin for error in any decline, the kid will be left at the alter in a minute.) Some kid posting a comittment to an Ivy before they finish their junior year is doing...

GOV, Lots of good advice here. As highlighted by many, go where the schools on your son's vetted (both academically and athletically) will be. These vetted schools are a "possible" fit and your son is marketing himself to them. And as Smoke said, going in the November prior to son's Junior season is ideal for getting on coaches' radar. When showcase / tourney conflicts arose, my sons contacted the coaches to ask who will be there for each school on his list. HC and RC are the key. We...

Speaking from personal experience of a 2017 going through this now, I would argue for the Showball camp over this HF camp if your son is Junior this year. A quick glance of the list shows more D1 schools at Showball, which if that is your son's goal, start with the D1's first and then move later into the D3's. Of course if his goal is to go to an elite D1 like the Ivy schools or the elite D3's, I would agree that HF would be my first choice. The timing of the HF camps in June in Sacramento...

Based on my 2017's experience, I would say HF is more about the academic record you present on the application, which then goes to the coaches who are working the camp. Certainly your 2019's GPA would attract some attention, and if he throws well he may get some value out of it. But from what I saw at the June session in Sacramento, the vast majority of schools are academic D3's and they do not really start recruiting until a kid's Senior year. I think they figure if your son is really good...

With a 2018 who went to the Nov HF camp and has been to a PG showcase I'll throw out a few things: At HF, college coaches beyond HPY were continuing to piece together 2017's. HPY, Duke, Vandy were focused on 2018 Pitchers throwing 86+. If you were a big position player with strong measurables and a good first ACT you were noticed. But the attention for 2018's was on pitching. If you look on PG, check out the few commits from class of 2018 for H & Y and look at their ACT scores. If a 2018...

I think all high academic kids should take the SAT very early, and a 4.1 GPA qualifies as that. I had all three of my student athletes take the SAT as freshman. The recruiting process is as much an elimination process as a selection process. If your 4.1 gets an equivalent SAT than you can eliminate many schools that are academically below his ability. Also the more you take the SAT the more comfortable you are with the test. There is no downside as if the scores are not what you like you...

Should your son attend HF at all? Only if the schools on his vetted list will be there. If the answer is "yes", then by all means your son can (and maybe, should) attend as a rising Junior even without SAT/ACT scores. And yes, the PSAT is a reasonable proxy for the SAT, though many kids improve their scores. This may be obvious, but I'll add that attending any showcase or camp for purposes of college recruiting, not just HF, should be driven by fit, i.e., will the schools on your son's...

100% agree with every word Compare posted. If your son is truly going to get the value that HF provides, then putting his best academic foot forward at the right time can separate him from others in a very competitive high academic recruiting environment. In addition, the SAT and ACT scores are academic separators for many HF schools. Some of these schools are incredibly selective with single digit acceptance rates. If your son knows his SAT/ACT numbers in advance, he'll then know where to...
