Re: how hard do I have to throw to go D1

Nonamedad ·
Very helpful, correlates perfectly with what my eyes tell me. If you took those 197 players and gave each of the 300 D1 program 1, there would still be 33% +/- schools without a 90+ kid. As we know SEC schools like to stockpile these guys, so even fewer to go around for the other D1 programs. Thats why when I watch BTN or the Big12 or PAC 12 baseball I will most likely see 2 kids sitting mid 80s. Makes perfect sense.

I can't speak for noname but the way I read that was 50% of all pitchers in all games. Not 50% of teams will have at least one guy who throws 90. It would be good for him to come back and clear that up!

Re: how hard do I have to throw to go D1

Nonamedad ·
That's right 50 % of the pitchers on the teams. Both teams combined, So if we see 5 kids in a game total and 2 throw 90 that doesn't count, and it counts what is shown on TV, not PG numbers.

My son has attended both IMG and Doyle . He attended IMG for two weeks last summer and just finished the Doyle Academy 20 day program . I recommend the Doyle program . Following the Doyle program he came back a different player . His confidence , baseball IQ, hitting and fielding have improved tremendously. This was witnessed by me and his coaches at home . His bad habits were corrected at Doyle . The Doyle brothers are hands on and involved in the teaching and coaching everyday . In...

My son attended Doyle last year for 20 day program. ( just turned 12 ) There are many things I really liked. To start off with the Doyle's are true gentlemen and very good people. The mental part of the game that they worked on was great. Very little down time and they demand all kids are gentlemen. I don't agree with some of the technical teaching that they do both on hitting and throwing mechanics. The other thing was they only had 9 kids 13 U . My son is a very good player , we live in...

Got new video of me throwing to second: https://youtu.be/LYaIejiLi30 Any advice? I feel like I am fast and like my pop time is good, but when I time it while watching the video back I am above 2.0, where I know I can be below 2.0

I'm no expert at all in catching but why are you turning the glove down just before you receive? After you catch the ball your glove is nice and quiet but that little flip could cost you some strikes.

Re: Catching Video, Feedback Appreciated

Wesleythecacther ·
I do that to relax my hand and make sure that I stay underneath the ball and that I catch the bottom of the ball and it allows me to stick the pitch instead of the ball bringing my glove out of the strike zone once it hits the mitt.

Re: Catching Video, Feedback Appreciated

noumpere ·
I disagree that the "flip" is going to cost any strike (in and of itself). As an umpire, I am focused on the ball, not the glove -- and by the time the ball gets to the glove the glove is back where it should be. I'll leave any comments on the value of the flip or how it might affect other aspects of the catching to the coaches here.

I will try to get video of me hitting sometime in the future. I knew someone was going to say that. A question related to hitting off the tee that I have is, how far off the tee should I be able to hit the ball? I am going into my senior year, I am 6 ft and 200 lbs.

Wesley, First, I think it is great that you are doing this. From experience I know that it is difficult to narrow down multiple shots into a concise video. It is important, though that you shorten it, if the intent is to get a college coach to view it. I recommend 2 minutes but no more than 3. My other points: The glove flip is common and typically used as a relaxation technique. Dont worry about that. I would definitely include hitting, maybe the first part if it is the strength of your...

Thanks for the advice. I will include hitting in future videos. I will shorten it some more by taking out the clips you suggested. I will get more video of my throws to second. I got this video taken a couple weeks ago and have gotten better. Got my pop time down below 2.0 and my best at a 1.8.

Man you look much better in this video than the one we talked over a few weeks ago. Great job in getting better with hard work. Keep it up. Few things 1. The glove flip isn't a big deal but IMO and others may disagree which is fine but personally I think you may have too much movement. You get into higher velocities it could cause you to be late in receiving but maybe not. I'm a big believer in the down tilt then pop to the spot. 2. Get rid of the throws from the knees. They don't sell you...

Like Coach2709's idea of some recoveries after block. Also suggest being on a field that is not all dirt + has a bag at 2nd base for you to throw toward. Good job, keep working!

I will get block and recover video sometime. Finding a field with a grass infield is rather difficult with where I live and most of the time the bases are put away in the sheds which I do not have access to. I will try my best next time to do what I can.

Velocity is part God-given, part trainable. As for catching velocity, it generally doesn't matter directly. Pop times do. Actual, real pop times that are ELITE for advanced HS kids are in the 1.98 - 2.05 range with HIGH accuracy, not random throws 8 feet above the bag. An accurate 2.15 or better is very, very good for HS kids. Velocity is part of pop time but it's far less important than mechanics, transfer, and catching ability.

I honestly doubt you threw a verified 1.8. The average pop time for elite MLB catchers is in the high 1.8X range. There's no one here to impress, most of us are ex-coaches and parents of once (and still) very good baseball players. The best thing you can do for your career is to be honest with yourself and your current abilities.

Maybe he did hit a 1.8 one time. Nothing surprises me when something is hand timed. There are a ton of kids who have hand-timed 4.4 40's but run 4.6 or higher when electronic timed There was a kid at our local high school who consistently put up excellent pop times and replicated it in games and threw everybody out. But, he was small, 5'8" 130lbs. O.K. HS hitter, looked to hit oppo base hits. As a defensive catcher, he had D1 skills, but did not project as far as size or as a hitter. Lots of...

It might be rare but I have seen HS kids POP 1.8's at showcases. I do not know the OP but I would not be quick dismiss what he says. My guess is that he is pretty quick based on the video, but needs to have it verified at showcase type event.

With all the metrics available today, I think a catcher's throw should be evaluated based on velocity and accuracy. Maybe "pop" with an adjustment based on the throw. Was at a showcase one time where the 3 best POPs would probably throw out 25% of would be runners.

Our travel coach told one of our catchers not to showcase yet because college scouts like to see 80+ velo from behind the plate. I am not sure if this is the "new" thing but this literally happened a week ago. He made it seem like a premium is put on velo.

Re: Velocity, God given? Or can it be drastically improved?

I personally do not have an 80+ catching velocity, but have gone to college camps. I do understand why your coach would say that because it would put the catcher above the rest and make him stand out.

Do not be concern about "pop" time, it creates one handed "lazy" catchers who cannot block the pitchers curve ball. When you "warm" up - practice catching the thrown ball on the heal of your mitt. This allows a quick transfer into the throwing hand. Infielders also should practice. Question: do you use a Easton catchers mitt? Bob

I'm not sure how it creates "lazy" catchers per say. I am more focused on blocking the pictures curve ball then throwing the runner out if I have to choose between the two. and I do not have an Easton mitt, I had All Star
