The #1 Strength technique to prevent Arm Injury

DrChrisMcKenzie ·
Do you have a Superior Labrum Anterior to Posterior (SLAP) tear? Do you want to know how to prevent a SLAP tear, Elbow pain, or any significant injury from happening as a baseball player? Enter Chris, a 15y/o left handed pitcher who was throwing good heat for his age (sitting in the low 80's) without any formal pitcher training. Chris began developing a painful pinch on the back of shoulder early in the Spring of 2014 in the late cocking position. This pain eventually brought him to my...

Pain in arm (like electric shock!!)

My son will be turning 14, has been complaining on and off about a 'shock' type pain in his throwing arm. This happens only when he throws hard, and not every time he throws, but more often that not, and at least for the past 2 years of Travel Ball....

inner elbow pain 13 yr old

mysonsacatcher ·
My son is 13 and is in the midst of an 8 week shut down due to little league elbow (medial epicondyle growth plate). This is the third time he has had to be shut down from throwing. The most recent shut down was about 2 years ago. We thought we had fully recovered from this the second time but apparently not. Who out here has dealt with this multiple times and when did it finally end and were there any lingering affects?

Potential arm trouble

Little ·
My Sophomore son's coach is trying to turn him into a sidearm pitcher. Whenever he pitches at practice his arm hurts and he tells the coaches but they say he needs to build arm strength. His arm has never hurt before when pitching. I told him if it hurts tell them you can't do it. He has been very successful throwing at 3/4 slot and never any pain. Should I be concerned or trust the coaches. Common sense tells me protect his arm.

Could be a pinched nerve. Your son may need to see a PT but first he needs to see an orthopedist ASAP.

Your son has severe and persistent pain in his arm. A medical doctor has the tools, training, and experience to diagnose what is causing the pain. The medical specialty most closely associated with this type of potential injury is Orthopedics. An MD who specializes in sports medicine may be of help, so that would be a good alternative, but he might end up asking for the orthopedist's opinion.

Sounds like a pinched nerve issue to me. Kind of like when you hit your "funny bone." I'll second the Orthopedist asap. Good luck.

+100 on the Orthopedist. I would look to an Orthopedic group that services the Pro, D1, or Semi-Pro teams in your area. My son's Orthopedist happens to be the team doctor for our local MLB team - pretty qualified to treat arm issues.

Sounds like an ulnar nerve issue. Follow the advice by posters above.

Re: Pain in arm (like electric shock!!)

A good sports physical therapist would be my first stop. Mechanical issues at the elbow can irritate and entrap the nerves at the elbow. The poor old elbow will get beat up because of mechanical issues above and below the elbow. It isn't as simple as an "elbow injury" typically. The difference between a good sports physical therapist and a good orthopod, is that the orthopod will typically focus on the elbow only (which is his/her job) and focus on the "symptomatic" area (which is a needed...

If he has been having issues for this long, I would also offer that he may be doing something incorrect mechanically that is stressing his elbow. You may want to have his motion evaluated by someone other than his current pitching coach. I say that because if he does have some sort of mechanical fault - it is obviously something his current coach is not seeing. There are a couple of advertisers here that might be able to offer that type of service remotely.

Definetly sounds like ulnar nerve. I strongly suggest that you send him to an ortho before you do anything. Because you have let this go for a long period of time there may be damage to the nerve. The nerve sits in a groove in the elbow. Sometimes the nerve will not stay in the groove and slips in and out of the groove. This action causes irritation to the nerve. A test should be done to determine if the nerve is still viable. The doctor may also consider if there has been any other issue...

I believe Dr. Andrews is in Pensacola, which is a pretty good ways from Tampa, and he's scaled back his practice. But if the OP will call his office, or contact ASMI.ORG through through their website, I'm sure you'll be able to get a referral to a doctor in Tampa.

Yes they will refer those they have trained with. Thats why I say call them. This is a youth player having elbow issues. So I would see who they may refer to in area. Keepin mind many of these team docs specialize in certain body parts. If my son is having elbow issues go to a guy who specializes in elbows. FYI when son was with the cardinals it took another doctor in NYC to diagnose his issue...rare cortacoid impingement...took 3 seasons of pain discomfort and dl and doc alchek got it right...

So I followed the advice and took my son in to see an Orthopedic Surgeon in Tampa. He took X-rays of both shoulders and deducted that the pain was due to "Little Leaguers Shoulder". My son has been asked to ice his arm at least 3 times a day and NOT do any throwing/pitching for at least 6 weeks, at which point we will see him again. Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions. It was what made me take him to the doctor in the first place :-)

Glad you started the process, and have some direction. Six weeks is how long it takes the body to heal up. My concern is that in six weeks, you are still in the same boat, as nothing that caused the flair up (in the first place) has been corrected. Again, the Doc is treating the symptom only, the elbow pain, with this approach. Noting that it does need rest, and he is correct, and not cutting on him in any way what so ever. Highest respect for those docs. I am completely on board with that.

If the DR. is right and the treatment works you may have saved your son a ton of physical and emotional pain of a traumatic injury by simply asking the question. Good for you and for everyone here who jumped in to offer suggestions. Big part of the reason I spend some of what I consider to be my valuable time on this site.

You definitely should seek medical attention. Do you have a trainer at school? At kids school they would get you evaluated by tye trainer first, then if necessary send you to the ortho. On the positive side, since you have pain in several locations it would seem like general irritation and inflammation. Not some thing catastrophic like ucl tear. Get it checked out and let the pros guide you. Good luck.

When it hurts, shut it down. You only have one throwing arm, when it's gone, so are you. Talk to your coach, athletic trainer, or doctor. Short term disruptions should not derail your long term plans, but they might if you wait too long.

Wesley, From following your posts, I know that you've been extremely dedicated and worked hard to earn an opportunity to play at the next level. You REALLY need to follow the advice given, even if it means that you need to rest (best case) and miss some or all of this season. This pain is significant enough to cause you concern. If it's simply inflammation and not an injury, you run the risk of injury by compensating with improper mechanics or simply the fatigue. If it is injury, then you...

Son had it 7th grade off season and freshman year during season. First time shut down for two weeks second for one week. It wasn't as bad the second time but he was more conscious of it and noticed it sooner. Doctor said it could come back anytime until the growth plate closes. He's a junior now and hasn't had a problem since.

Same instruction both times. Son felt pain when he turned his hand so the instructions were to shut down till no pain. Then light throwing. If pain came back shut down 2 days and try again. If no pain work up to full throwing over a week. At anytime if pain shut back down. Both times after pain went away from being examined he threw without pain and worked up to full speed without incident. The second time was shorter because at the very first twinge of pain in that area my son recognized is...

My son dealt with this at 12. We shut him down for a year and then limited him to 25-30 pitches for a year. He was fine for 2 years but last spring his coach had him throwing 80-90 pitches a week every week. Towards the end of tge season, elbow pain again. We shut down for 4 weeks. We now have a doctor's note for no more than 65 pitches a week. He also upped band work and hasn't had any trouble for the last 6-8 months.

He said if it was his son he wouldn't have him pitch until his growth plates closed, But he is 16 now and they are still open. He advised if we did let him, to be very conservative. It hasn't hurt him, he throws hard and like our doctor said...would you rather throw at 13-14 or in hs and college. Don't get me wrong, my son was devastated at the time.

My son (now a HS sophomore, 16 yrs old) had the same elbow issue as a 12 yr old. We were told to shut him down at least 6-8 weeks, then start a throwing program when he could throw ~20 feet w/o pain (which was at 8 weeks, as I recall). He did some pitching that year after the throwing program, then had similar growth plate-related issues in his shoulder. That was near the end of the summer season, and he stopped baseball and didn't play at all that fall. The following spring, when my son was...

2 other things that might help: My son's physical therapist (who has worked with a lot of pro and college pitchers, as well as young ones) told us that my son might just need to plan on being a closer until he finished growing quickly. That turned out to be good advice. He also told us that growth goes in fits and starts--a kid might grow an inch in a month and then not at all for a couple of months after that. So he actually recommended that I measure my son monthly and if he was in a...

This is basically what we did with my son. He was a closer (usually no more than an inning and a half) until last year when the HS coach had him start every week and issues returned. He hadn't trained to throw 80-90 pitches and his body told him.
