There is no call because there has not been a play made yet. If the coaches believe the player missed the plate then tell the catcher to tag the runner or if a force tag the plate. There is no reason to address the umpire in this situation. Its not his job to inform you one way or the other in this case. There is no out (yet) and there is no run (yet). If the coaches and players have a clue they will know when their is no signal given. Its not the umpires job to make sure the players and...

I went with my mother to the doctor five years ago. I sat in the Dr's office with my mom as he walked in. With a grim look on his face he said "Mrs May I am sorry to inform you that you have cancer. This in an aggressive cancer and the treatment for it is very taxing on anyone especially for someone your age. I know this is hard for you to hear but I have to tell you , you need to get your affairs in order rather quickly." My mom looked at me as I sat there with tears streaming down my face.

And I understand your reluctance to accept this change, I really do, however, it is becoming the norm at pro levels and I guarantee it will flow downhill. If a BU clearly sees the ball sitting on the ground while the PU is ringing up a tag play, he is expected to come in and inform the BU what he saw. But he certainly should get there before you reiterate your call. I saw this mechanic at the pro level last year over a play at first!! A huddle at first where three other umpires informed UI...

Stats, I understand your point and there isn't a person here that doesn't think that 177 pitches is too many. As a parent I would be appalled if my son's coach did that to a child. But, like I said earlier, if it isn't your child then you shouldn't be directly involved. You can let the parents of the boy know and if you want kindly inform the coach that such a thing will not happen with your son. The primary responsibility for the welfare of the boy in question lies with the parents. As...

This is directly from the 2011 NHFS Rulebook; I see this question repeatedly asked on the site and the reality is while there is not a "must slide" rule sliding takes out most of the question/judgement regarding "malicious." Sure there can be malicious sliding tactics as well but to be safe on collision plays at home it is best for the runner to slide or give themselves up. After that is is absolutely the umpire's judgement call. MALICIOUS CONTACT • Half of baseball ejections deal with...

Last night's umps took a lot of guff from the fans, and I was one of them. From where I sat not far behind home plate, the strike zone was all over the place -- and that went both ways. There were also situations where batters requested time with ample time before the pitch and it was not granted; no idea what was up with that. There was a lot of barking in the JR first about the potential third out reaching first after a third strike struck the ground. The batter was about halfway to the...

However, IMO you were naive in your approach of this situation and you're not doing junior any favors by trying to micro-manage his development -- both from a mental and physical perspective. I find it hard to believe a coach would give an iron clad guarantee of what and how much of a position a kid would play throughout a season, but if it happened and the coach doesn't live up to the commitment, then the organization should...

I can tell you if you approach a friend and tell him you have heard a "rumor" and you want to inform them that you have heard a "rumor" LOOK OUT! Its not going to be pretty in many cases. Most parents are going to go off. They are going to defend their child. They are going to ask their child and their child is going to deny it. But there is a run scored. There may be a minute or two before the defense loses the right to appeal. At some point, even in the Majors, the scoreboard will reflect the run scored even if he never touched home and the appeal possibility remains (otherwise, there is a really obvious clue). If a runner misses second, the umpire can call him safe at home and the run can still be removed on appeal. If a runner touches home while the ball is in the outfield, I would not expect a "safe" call from...

One of the things that really works for me is I hold them not to a high school standard but I inform them what the average college player is doing and what their times and speeds are and the players see that as a motivational tool as most want to play college ball. I also give them lots of information on colleges and the average g.p.a and SAT and ACT scores.

Perhaps that is why he hasn't given details. The communication should always be between you and your son, it is his responsibility to inform you of injury, not communicate by trainer. The way I see it, it is his decision not to inform you if he chooses not to, perhaps it really isn't a big deal and doesn't want you making it one, by calling the trainers or anyone else. Or perhaps it is a bit more serious, but what are you going to do at home when he is miles away? Perhaps he doesn't want you...

Okay, that's what the 16 weeks was. Knew I had read it once upon a time. In NAIA though, the release process is different I believe. I believe the student athlete may contact the new institution. It is up to that coach to properly inform the old school/coach about the contact, but that is all that is necessary. Much different than the NCAA rule.

Re: Maximum mound height

Michael S. Taylor ·
That is the way to enforce the rule. It requires a transit to check and even if it is wrong, you aren't rebuilding a mound before the game. You inform the AD and get him to fix it. The less precise way to check is a rule, string and line level, but I would never build a mound that way. I built a mound a couple of years ago, we checked before removal. It was 16" above home. We dropped it to 10" and it looked like a zit. The pitcher complained and we ended raising it just so it looked correct.

The proper mechanic is to call the CI when it happens (point at the catcher and call "That's interference") and let the play continue. As jkk has said, if the batter reaches 1st and all other runners advance at least one base, the INT is ignored (no option for the coach). If the INT is not ignored, call time at the end of playing action and enforce the INT. Batter gets 1st, return runners unless they were stealing on the pitch. If the coach wants the result of the play, it is up to him to...

Second, coaches need to adhere to pitch counts and days of rest in between games. Remember these are young men that have probably been playing summer and fall ball and if they lay off for 3 months conditioning will be an issue. Winning at all cost is not fair to these young men!
