2020 with injury

Jam24 ·
Hi, I am a first-time poster though I regularly read the advice on this forum. So thanks in advance for any advice you can provide. My son is a RHP who last year (summer/fall of 2017) after his freshman year received numerous offers, including a full ride offer from a Pac12 school. He felt very much like he wanted to keep looking because he didn't know what he wanted (and the Pac12 school is in our hometown and he wants to go away for school). Anyway, fast forward to this year and he...

Electric shock/numbness when throwing hard

I am a college pitcher and as soon as I get to throwing hard I get numbness or a shocking sensation to all my fingers except my thumb. Any suggestions on what I should do to help this? This has been a issue for almost 2 years now.

Tommy John...again.

Enjoying the Ride ·
We’ve just gotten some rough news. Despite having pretty clean mechanics and not overusing his arm, our son injured his elbow the summer after his junior year in high school. On his doctor’s advice, he tried to rehab it conservatively for a year, which ultimately did not work and ended up in TJ surgery the summer after graduation. The good part was that he still ended up with a baseball scholarship to his dream school. They never stopped believing in him and remained supportive throughout,...

Partially Torn UCL right before senior year

lionhurler ·
Hey guys, After seeing two doctors, the second being Dr. Ciccotti (Phillies), I have been diagnosed with a partially torn UCL. I still have a dynamic ultrasound test next week to determine the severity of the tear but just wanted some opinions. I'm a pitcher going into my senior year of college. This past season is when I started dealing with elbow pain but I pitched through the season and took a couple weeks off to see how it was but the pain came back even worse a few weeks later after 2...

Did Dr Ciccotti talk to you about the "Primary Repair" technique? I have read that it significantly reduces rehab time, but the surgeon won't know for sure whether or not you're a candidate until the scope is in your elbow. May be worth investigating. http://m.mlb.com/news/article/...my-john-alternative/

Thanks! He didn't discuss surgery much since hes hoping I can rehab it but I'll bring it up to him at my follow up appointment in 2 weeks. Although if I have the surgery in August, 6-7 months recovery would bring me back during the first month of our season, it may be worth considering.

Based upon orthopedic advice, my son sat out 6 weeks at the end of his senior HS season. He then rehabbed from approx. May 20 thru July 10. Got to college, nothing hurt, per se but his velocity was down 3-4 MPH and then slowly dropped further until he called and said elbow was hurting again. Had to have TJ surgery. Was told PRP would make it feel better but that in the Ortho's opinion (Kremchek), it was a short term fix and son would be right back in 5-6 month needing TJ surgery. He elected...

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's exactly what I don't want to happen and it adds on to the similar stories I've heard. Obviously I wont make any final decisions until I see my doctor again and discuss with him but I'm leaning towards surgery because with grad school as an option it seems to give me the best chance to play my 4th year.

ask your trainer for a referral to a orthopedic specializing in pitchers elbows... If in fact there are any looking at thi board they would not make any assumptions without seeing you. Everyone else should have zero opinion.

Good call from Bacdorslider not to come here for medical advice. Follow his advice. FWIW my son had ulner nerve entrapment. He also needed an elbow cleanout. Recovery took longer than expected.

Unfortunately my college trainer does not seem to think that this is a serious matter, I have gone to a neurologist on my own and all nerves seem to be functioning well according to the nerve test that was conducted, that being said it has left me wondering what It is. I have switched from almost all the doctors in my area because they seem to ask for my symptoms and just give me anti-inflammation pills and pain killers or tell me to try and play a different position. Prior to this injury I...

16yo had tingly feeling and elbow pain last year once he grew to 6' and started trying to throw harder. Nothing structurally wrong, but he has had to learn to throw all over again. At this point he is able to throw without pain, with the same or better velo, but his accuracy and finer points of pitching are still a work in progress with his new motion. I am not a doctor, but my wife is. While she understood the diagnosis far better than a lay person, she would emphasize that orthopedics(or...

I am on a long waiting list for orthopedics. Thanks for your response I appreciate it.

Jam - Has any doctor been able to figure out the source of the problem? That needs to be the first order of business if he going to continue pitching. The word may be out that he has an injury and RC’s now want to see if he will be and can remain healthy going forward. Best wishes on a full and speedy recovery to your young man. I hope that it all works out in the end.

If they 've pulled their attention, do you really think they would have sent a NLI on signing day? You would have had false security. Verbals are not binding. Worse case kid attends fall and gets cut. Lost a year of eligibility.

I started to add something similar to my post. I really don’t think that you hedged and lost. It’s likely that, as Bandera stated, no school would have honored the offer IF he’s not healthy. The good news is that IF he can get healthy and return to form, the interest from schools should return.

You still have time. If doctors say he has a good chance of getting better, then do what they say. If they made offers and he was good enough as a freshman to get attention it will be there if he gets back healthy.

JAM24 - I greatly sympathize with your son's situation. If he was good enough to get P5 offers early, he'll get them later, too, if he can get healthy. The key is getting back to 100%. You definitely should take him to somebody who is an expert in shoulders and throwing injuries.

That’s a good question about whether there is a specific mechanical or physiological cause. I don’t know but we have a good doctor and can ask that question. Thanks for your comments and good wishes.

Thanks for the replies. To Bandera and HShuler, you make a good point. It’s possible schools would have dropped him but I do See schools stick with an injured player sometimes (maybe see what happens the following year). Certainly if he doesn’t heal and improve it wouldn’t have worked out either way.

Have you been to an orthopedist at all? From your response above, it doesn't sound like it, which is a bit surprising given the potential your son has shown to have gained high interest early and that fact that he missed his entire HS season. As others have stated already, seek some serious medical opinion, but you need to look beyond the family doctor (and apologies if you have, but your post above just mentions "a good doctor") and seek out an orthopedist that has some specialty in sports...

Nuke83 - thanks for your concern. we have been to an ortho. Had MRIs and know specifically what the injury is. But we haven’t asked if there is something he is doing - mechanically - that is causing it. Would need to sync up dr. /PT/ coach for that I guess.

I'm starting to think that the early commit pressure high school kids and their parents feel applies more to position players than to pitchers. Colleges never stop looking to add the right pitcher it seems. So I worry less about slots being filled as a pitcher. My 2020 LHP is in a somewhat similar situation where he picked up some elbow tightness this summer. No structural damage, but no real urgency to push it as a 2020 in the fall of his junior year... so he's going to rest it. Just want...

ETR, So sorry to hear about this. An injury is never easy to deal with. A "re-injury" just seems cruel. I wish I could offer sage advice, but you are in rare territory with a re-injury and your son seems to have a more than reasonable plan to address it. When my son was injured after his sophomore year all he could think about (besides school) was getting back on the field, and competing again. It was strong motivation. There were a handful of challenges along the way to recovery and...

ETR, Such a difficult turn of events. Baseball can be so very, very cruel at times. We're dealing with an injury right now too so I have some idea of what you're going through. I wouldn't even want to think about doing it twice. Just when you think you are on a path, it sometimes takes a bad turn. Please keep us updated on his progress and best of luck with whatever treatment path you end up on.

ETR, as the dad of a pitcher that has been through the non-surgical rehab for a UCL injury as a HS sophomore, then nerve transposition surgery in the fall of his freshman season only to end up having TJ surgery that same December, I can somewhat empathize with you. My son's recovery from the TJ was not the "smooth" path that so many attest to. He is 26 months post surgery. I will tell you there are days he calls me and says, "Dad, my arm is bothering me again." Sorry to hear this, best of luck to your son and him getting healthy. Here's another perspective he should seriously consider. There is more to life than baseball. My son played for 4 years, was injured and lost most of a season, came back and finished and had a nice Sr year. He went on and got his masters (fully paid because of summer internships) and now has a nice life working for a rapidly growing tech company. Thanks to all for sharing. The medical consensus seems to be that damage to son's graft is extensive and unfortnately a full revision is needed. He will have it done next Friday. They will use the hamstring rather than the palmaris this time. He has a strong support system in place for the rehab and at this point just wants to get it done and start moving forward.
