Walking Lead

Jim Dietz, Former coach at San Diego State has a team defensive drill dvd that is excellent. "Total Team Defensive Drills" is the title (I think).

Re: Up-tempo Practice Ideas

former san diego state coach Jim Dietz ran something called "speed ball", great for having fun, getting in shape, playing defense and forcing guys to be aggressive at the plate. He put it in a video i think it was called Jim Dietz total team defense drills. Our players love it and it is a great way to close off a practice, or to get the guys jump started.

The Oviedo kid is Jeremy Thorn. Had arm surgery in late summer I believe,, would be surprised if he saw any action this season. He could be an excellent D1 pitcher if recovers. Lake Mary has a few already signed: Tyson Auer SS with a rocket arm,, signed with UCF. Paul Cinder - 6-8 rhp with a huge upside down the road,,,, should have a big senior season. Scott Eckard - LHP signed with USC - Spartanburg,,,,, nasty movement on ball! Ty Powell - 2b/ss - late growth now 6-2 170 and signed with...

I like the book " Coaching Pitchers " by McFarland, it is a very good read for those not up to speed on pitching. I think Ron Polk's book is a good one, I think the books by Delmonico are good ones, and I have many more that I have gained incredible information from. I like Jim Morris video " How to Run a Championship Baseball Program" , I like the video I got for Christmas by the ex-coach on San Diego State...Coach Dietz. I also have many more videos that I consider well worth the money I...

Re: Hit By Pitch

MLB Rules Per baseball official rule 6.08(b), a batter becomes a baserunner and is awarded first base when he or his equipment (except for his bat): is touched by a pitched ball outside of the strike zone, and he attempts to avoid it (or had no opportunity to avoid it), and he did not swing at the pitch.[1] If all these conditions are met, the ball is dead, and other baserunners advance if they are forced to vacate their base by the batter taking first. Rule 5.09(a) further clarifies that a...

JCG posted: Anecdotally I would say it's pretty common. My kid moved from 2nd to 1st in his team's lineup halfway through this season, and I don't think he's swung at a first pitch since. He's doing well but he'd rather bat second. I really don’t know how prevalent it is, but I think if a coach does it on a “blanket” basis he’s making a mistake. I believe you have to really know your hitters well. the attached comes from 10 years of HSV data. The 1 st 3 pages are hitters and the last 2...

EVHS BASEBALL: Rough start Posted: Thursday, March 19, 2015 12:15 am By Ron Counts rcounts@starexponent.com (540) 825-0771 ext. 166 A soggy diamond forced King George High School's baseball team to push its home opener back a day, and cost the Foxes home field advantage. The Foxes looked right at home Wednesday on a blustery afternoon at Eastern View, though. King George put seven runs on the board in the first inning and limited the Cyclones to four base hits in an 11-4 rout that was called...

Ripken Fan posted: No. If it's like Gamechanger App, contact percentage are those AB's where hitter didn't strikeout. A batter with a 90% contact percent, would strikeout 10% of the time. When I hear “contact”, I immediately think of the bat making contact with the ball, so I’m not understanding why it would be called “Contact Percentage” as opposed to something like “BIP Percentage”. The attached report is what I run when I want to actually see how hitters and pitchers make contact when...

No! Don't Call Bunt! posted:… Hit in the 2 hole (In 6 games has hit 5th, 6th, 6th,10th and now 2nd). … You seem to think batting in many different batting positions is somehow a problem. I ran the batting positions and how many games each player hit in them for all of the HSV hitters I’ve scored for since 2007 in the spring season. Please see attachment. As you can see, batting in many different batting positions is the norm.

Re: What is the best pitch in baseball?

Stats4Gnats ·
This subject comes up a few times every year, and we get to hear all kinds of stats, then are told why that 1 st pitch is so important. But with all those stats and all that rhetoric, I never see anyone present what finally happens in a PA by what that 1 st pitch was, except me. Forget averages, just look and see what happens when the 1 st pitch is a strike as opposed to when it isn’t.

Re: Video

TR, Video can definately help PROVIDED the player has tools. Explain how you can alter a radar gun readings. I am sure alot of parents woudl like to learn how they can do it. Travis Lee was in Oregon. Jim Dietz has gotten alot of players from there, but Dietz never went up to Oregon to see Travis play, he asked for a video. Any coach with a brain can tell hitter after viewing a film.

Drivel - Where is it stated on the skillshow website that a tape alone can get you a scholarship? Secondly, get your facts straight on Travis Lee. He was originally from San Diego and Dietz was very familiar with him way before any tape arrived. I get the impression you are trying to sell something.

There you have it, Drivel. Jim Dietz was well aware of Travis Lee while he was in high school because he coached him! There was no tape. Nice story though. Maybe you can write a screenplay...move over Coach Carter and hello Coach Drivel.
