former san diego state coach Jim Dietz ran something called "speed ball", great for having fun, getting in shape, playing defense and forcing guys to be aggressive at the plate. He put it in a video i think it was called Jim Dietz total team defense drills. Our players love it and it is a great way to close off a practice, or to get the guys jump started.

The Oviedo kid is Jeremy Thorn. Had arm surgery in late summer I believe,, would be surprised if he saw any action this season. He could be an excellent D1 pitcher if recovers. I like the book " Coaching Pitchers " by McFarland, it is a very good read for those not up to speed on pitching. I think Ron Polk's book is a good one, I think the books by Delmonico are good ones, and I have many more that I have gained incredible information from. I like Jim Morris video " How to Run a Championship Baseball Program" , I like the video I got for Christmas by the ex-coach on San Diego State...Coach Dietz. I ran the batting positions and how many games each player hit in them for all of the HSV hitters I’ve scored for since 2007 in the spring season. Please see attachment. As you can see, batting in many different batting positions is the norm.

This subject comes up a few times every year, and we get to hear all kinds of stats, then are told why that 1 st pitch is so important. But with all those stats and all that rhetoric, I never see anyone present what finally happens in a PA by what that 1 st pitch was, except me. Forget averages, just look and see what happens when the 1 st pitch is a strike as opposed to when it isn’t.

TR, Video can definately help PROVIDED the player has tools. Explain how you can alter a radar gun readings. I am sure alot of parents woudl like to learn how they can do it. Travis Lee was in Oregon. Jim Dietz has gotten alot of players from there, but Dietz never went up to Oregon to see Travis play, he asked for a video. Any coach with a brain can tell hitter after viewing a film.

Drivel - Where is it stated on the skillshow website that a tape alone can get you a scholarship? Secondly, get your facts straight on Travis Lee. He was originally from San Diego and Dietz was very familiar with him way before any tape arrived. I get the impression you are trying to sell something.

There you have it, Drivel. Jim Dietz was well aware of Travis Lee while he was in high school because he coached him! There was no tape. Nice story though. Maybe you can write a screenplay...move over Coach Carter and hello Coach Drivel.

TR, thanks for the college select sales pitch. what percentage of college select showcase players are playing baseball in college Travi Lee had been born in San Diego but moved and went HS in Washington, batted .600 his senior year. Travis sent a tape to Jim Dietz. Dietz who coached a team in the Alaska League brought Travis up there to workout and play for a week as a graduating senior, Very rare. Travis hit so well Dietz kept him all year and gave him a athletic scholarship to SDSU. The...
