I've noticed lots of emails in my son's (and my) inbox from recruiting services. One just asked, "Are you worried about falling behind....?" in the recruiting process. Those people can go #*&@& themselves. Sorry, just had to get that out. Hope everyone is coping as well as possible.

Thank you. This article is from a player. I would suggest parents to pass it on to their players, who should be proactive in the process.

Great advice from Jack Kruger. I hope all PSA's read it. I sent out an email to 50 or so PSA's that have been on our recruiting list a few days ago. I thought I would get hit with questions and concerns almost immediately. Well I heard back from 3 of them …. a head scratcher. I guess they are putting everything on hold but I'm not sure why.

Re: Position to showcase?

Sonny R ·
My 2023 has only attended one showcase and it was as a pitcher & 1 st base. All of his throws during the position portion of the showcase were from 1 st to 2 nd , and his infield velo was clocked at 70 mph. He can throw much harder than 70 mph (FB clocked at 80 MPH). Should he identify as a middle infielder or 3 rd base at the next event so that he has the opportunity to get his infield velo up?

Re: Position to showcase?

cabbagedad ·
Not a bad idea but depends on the event. Most used to lump IF's (except maybe 1b's) and have them all throw from SS for IF velo so it wouldn't matter in that instance. It's possible that this is changing? BTW, what was his P velo for that event? Still, and again, no hurry for a 2023. The single best thing to do to improve his velo readings is wait a year or two

Cabbagedad: He has 3 pitches he throws with any regularity; FB (79-80), Slider (74-75), and a change (72-74). He started throwing a sinker/2 seam in practice and flat surface but only used it a few times in a game. He’s about 6’0”/180 lbs and growing.

Well, shoot, you got me started ... As a side note, he may want to keep in mind as he develops... just a bit more differential between FB velo and changeup velo would be advisable. There are a few easy ways to knock the CU velo down a tick without showing less arm speed/effort. And, IMO, if he isn't above-average sharp with each of the first three pitches you mention, I think he would benefit far more by focusing on honing those rather than start tinkering with a fourth. Three looks is...

The old saying still applies " if you hit....they will find a position for you." Playing multiple positions can be an advantage as it gives a coach options defensively while keeping a bat in the lineup. My son was RC's number 2 choice on th board for his natural position. With Son also playing 2 other positions the RC made a decision to extend an offer anyway with the knowledge that so long as he shows progress with the bat he would have an opportunity to compete at position A, B, C and DH.

I agree. I think playing multiple positions is better for your frosh. Regarding age, my kid is November born 2022 and younger than some of the 2023. His measurables (baseball but more importantly grades) are in the 2022 group. For me personally, while it is nice to be the older stud, being younger put a chip on my kid's shoulder and that motivated him to work harder

EM: Welcome to the Board. Your son is still young and should continue to play multiple positions as long as he can and as each team he plays sees fit. Some showcases allow for multiple positions, usually for not much more $. My son was recruited for and received offers playing both MI and CF. He made it a point to keep both OF and IF mitts with him. He was often asked by colleges which position he would play, and he would answer he can and would play either, but felt he had the instincts of...

I've seen several 2022's, 2023's, and even seeing a couple 2024's now. I don't see the value in re-classing at this point. Is it to have a better chance at playing in college? Trying to make a P5 instead of D3? Better offer? The system is going to be so jammed up it is going to take a while for everyone to figure out how to navigate it.

Pretty much everyone should be more worried about school than baseball right now - and every new stupid ruling by the NCAA/NJCAA just reinforces that point.

For what purpose? Recruiting dead period doesn't actually mean anything, coaches are still offering and players are still committing. I wouldn't hold back based on the idea that a college who may or may not be interested in me will have a larger roster. The best players will get their opportunities, the other guys should worry more about school than baseball at that point.

Any 2022s out there reclassifying?

Six-Four-Three ·
Given the recruiting dead period and the pileup of college players remaining on rosters for the next few years, are any parents thinking of reclassifying their 2022s or have any already done so? It seems like their opportunities are going to be limited.

Yep. Academies are popping up everywhere. More than half my son’s fall team play for an academy. Only one of those kids is a re-class though. The parents I’ve talked to said their kids will just play at an academy their senior year. Pretty crazy to think HS parents are basically red-shirting their kids right now.

We can have all sorts of feelings around the concept of reclassifying, but what no one can ignore is the math. In many cases - if not most - we're talking about kids who have had college baseball dreams since they started forming memories. All the math right now says that the longer you can string the journey along/ride out the storm, the better your chances of continuing to play. Don't get me wrong, I can fully appreciate the logic and reason around kids coming back down to earth and...

It happens all the time in New England, maybe because we have so many prep/boarding schools here. Also, they don't lose any eligibility upon transferring and reclassing. The New England baseball recruiting scene also tends to focus on prospects coming from the prep leagues first and foremost, then regular high schoolers, so it does create a little bit of (self-inflicted) pressure to consider reclassing and going to prep by junior year. My '22 has been contacted by multiple schools with...

If you’re a legitimate pro prospect coming out of high school you don’t need to reclassify. If you’re not a legitimate pro prospect education should take more priority than reclassifying. If a kid is a late bloomer and his metrics finally say “pro prospect” at nineteen or twenty his D2 or D3 coach will get him in the right summer league to be scouted.

FWIW I overheard three ACC/Big 10 coaches discussing reclassing at a PG tournament. Their opinion was that it might give a temporary recruiting leg up but that it should be balanced with the additional wear and tear on the player’s body, particularly if he plays baseball exclusively. They felt like it was often a short-sighted decision but they understood the pressure, particularly when a lot of people do it. It was an interesting conversation.

Here in Houston parents start the kids at 6 years /or and redo 8th grade in a private school. So kids are 1 or 2 years older. My kid is in 8th grade 13 years. He’s the youngest. His peers are 14 and 15 in 8th grade. Going into high school 9th grade at 15 or 16 years. Crazy to me tho. My kiddo is going in at 14! So my kid will graduate at 17 turning 18 and his team mates will be 19 or 20 😐! It’s so normal her that is weird to be 14 in high school.

There was a kid at a local USA Today top 25 private who was twenty when he graduated. The kid looked like a man senior year. He was. He still only went D3. He started kindergarten a year late. Then he repeated freshman year when he switched from public to private. As long as the private isn’t competing in the public school athletic association it’s ok.

I would recommend really focusing on the "couple D1s and D2s" that he is talking to now. Forget where he wants to go but can't get a connection. It's probably too late in the game for him and them. He's got size, grades, metrics and experience all in his favor. Is anyone close to making an offer?

I had a quick look on PG, it's true that there are some D1 schools who don't list many 2022 recruits (4 or fewer) right now. E.g. Hofstra, Georgetown, Binghamton, Albany, Merrimack, Miami OH, etc. Can those who know suggest whether this means they are still recruiting, or whether there are other reasons why schools like that might not have many recruits listed?

@GSully1 - my 2022 is a catcher so I sorta/kinda pay attention to other 22 C's in our area (PA/NJ/NY). And, I can tell you that there are many who don't have your son's size and numbers who are already committed to D1s and D2s already. Don't get caught without a chair when the music stops. If he has an offer and it checks most of the important boxes, don't wait for something better because it might not be coming. Best of luck.

He doesn’t need to be standing when the music stops for sure. He’s sent info to Georgetown and GW, no replies. Miami OH has 5 commits, 2 Cs in his class per PBR. He was talking to them, but went with different C in the fall. Was told he was late in getting on their radar. None of the other schools anotherparent lists have contacted him.

Some commits don't list themselves until they have the acceptance letter from the school. Others may not do PG events. I guess now in addition to PG, you can gain some more data points with the Transfer Portal.

Re: Uncommitted 2022 C - Showcase Camp/Recruiting Questions

You have to understand that with the 3000+ transfer portal, Juco transfers, extra years of eligibility (1 for NCAA, 2 for Juco), etc, most programs could actually afford to take the entire 2022 recruiting class off. Now, are programs doing that? Not likely. But just about every program could afford to without suffering and many are bringing in very few 2022s. I would not look at any program who only shows like 3-4 2022 commits on PG or PBR and think "they've got lots more offers coming!"

I didn't mean to suggest anything specific about those schools for your son, GSully1. I just was asking, for general information, what it means when a D1 school doesn't list many commitments at this time of year. I would hope that that doesn't lead people to think there might still be spots, when there are not.
