My son is a freshman at a competitive mid-western D1 JUCO and is in the process of trying to figure out a summer collegiate opportunity. He has been referred by his coach to a team in the Sunflower Collegiate League. The league recently added 4 teams from the now defunct Jayhawk league. Does anyone have any thoughts on the level of competition this league will have? Or how it would compare to the other collegiate leagues? Thanks!

My son played for the Hays Larks a couple of years ago. Hays and Liberal would be considered the best teams in the Jayhawk league and would be competitive in mid tier summer leagues. The 4 teams that are leaving were not as competitive, and are joining a lesser competitive league (in my opinion).

I see there is a team in the league that had a 1-24 record and several blowout losses. If that's the team...

Thanks for input thus far. This will be his first collegiate summer baseball. I feel that playing against the best competition is the best way to improve. But is it better as a position player to go somewhere with assured playing time where he will (hopefully) outperform? He is a JUCO looking for a shot at D1.

As a position player, you want decent competition where he'll play. Unless he is already shining as the absolute stud of his JC, this is probably a good league for a first year JC player. If the JC coach is referring, son should ask him what, if any, playing time arrangement is expected.

This is only the second year of this league. They are still evolving but I expect that the league will be much better next summer, from what I have heard.
