Re: Recruitable as Two Way Player for Ivy ???

Backstop22 really laid out the game plan about 2018's seeking a fit in academic ball. It's all about TESTING. Prepping , Tests, re-tests and for parents terribly expensive tutors. Also, I just sort of want to follow up my original post by saying. I'm reluctant at times to post about the realities of recruiting because I feel like I'm the 'grim reaper' . The reality of how offers come about and how schools recruit are cold and harsh. But it's the truth based on my experience. I also believe...

Son attended HF and the short answer to that question is yes, pitchers throw both days. I'm not sure if I'd say "make you" throw 2 days. I think you'd have the option to just throw day 1 or 2 but you'd most likely only get your 2 innings for that day. That's probably a good question for you to ask the HF team via email. They are very responsive. I can tell you that they have a pitching coordinator who checks on the pitchers each day as they enter the facility (on Long Island) and adjusts...

So you're saying that two short outings on consecutive days bothers your arm? If so, you may have an issue that requires attention.

Welcome to the site, Kayne87... Yes, this is the bigger concern... Figure out what the issues are and get them fixed sooner than later or there will be no purpose in pursuing playing at the next level. That symptom points to something either structural or mechanical and there is a possibility that you are worsening the issue by continuing to throw. Get to a good sports PT or sports ortho. Best of luck to you.

Once again, this can be a pitch count situation. Depending on how many pitches are thrown on the first day. It's not innings, it is the number of pitches that count. I'm almost certain that no one at either camp is going to throw someone who tells them he can't throw. This is why parents and players need to monitor things and understand arm care. Nobody running those events mentioned wants to purposely put any pitcher at risk. All you have to do is tell them ahead of time that you only want...

My son attended HF in Sacramento and if you signed up as a Pitcher as your primary position, you are expected, but not required, to pitch 2 innings both days. Now when I say "innings" remember: All batters start with a 1-1 count and are told to swing away--the HF umps call anything close a strike Only 5 batters hit each inning By way of example, my son pitched 11 pitches one inning and 14 the next and that was with several K's. I'd say most kids tossed between 15-25 pitches in their two...

Are you saying you are in pain day after throwing many innings or is arm just tired? Is it painful when you re throwing? How many do you pitch in a game, 100, 110, 120 plus? If you have any pain it needs to be checked out. Much better to have issue in HS and fix it then in college if you get to play at that level. Good Luck to you.

As mentioned above... Throwing a couple of innings two days in a row may not be ideal depending on the number of pitches - but it should be something that you can do if necessary. If you do move on to play in college, you are going to be expected to throw a lot. Probably 6-7 days a week at some points. If pitching one day makes it impossible to throw the next, you really need to get your arm checked out. You are probably aggravating a chronic condition, and that isn't good for your long term...

Thanks for the reply. I was approached by an Ivy and Georgetown. I also just got an email from a NESCAC. I went up to the Georgetown camp a few weeks ago and was 85-87. My GPA is only a 3.1 uw and a 3.3 w so I am a little worried that this score is too low for these schools. My test score is a 34 only when superscored (33 reg) but I think most schools take the superscore. Is it true that Ivy recruiting is in it's final phase? I have only seen a few kids commit thus far in the summer. I...

Without any other context, I'd be concerned about taking on an Ivy academically with a 3.1 GPA, and I would guess that your GPA would be a stumbling block in recruiting, though not necessarily an impassable one given your other numbers. Notwithstanding that, if you're sitting mid/upper 80s as a 2017, there's somewhere for you to play with that GPA and ACT. You should probably be further down the road than where you appear to be based on your questions here, though. If I were you, I'd be...

Your ACT is really high, while your GPA and uw GPA is low for Ivy and indicates lack of the rigor they want to see. There are certainly good D3 schools that would love to have you, but with your ACT and your velo, I'd spend a year or two at Juco kicking academic and baseball ass. If you do that you can take your pick of pretty much any school in the country.

When my son went through recruiting the two interested Ivies were looking for an unweighted 3.5 with several AP courses plus a 1300+ SAT (Math and English). 1300+ is equal to a 28 ACT on the conversion chart I found. The NESCACs and comparable D3s he spoke with soph year were looking for the same. Maybe your 34 ACT score will allow a little leeway on grades. Is your 3.3 unweighted or weighted? If unweighted with a lot of AP and high honors classes it may be ok if the coach wants to really...

The short answer is yes, however you still have a lot to prove to the coaches and the Admission Committee. Pitching is more than MPH and a good student is much better than an average GPA with a high ACT. The ivy & nescac coaches take their direction from the admissions committee. If I was an Ivy coach I'd have alot of questions about your academic work ethic or possibly the high school you went to. I understand there can be extenuating circumstances with ultra competitive high schools.

I have heard and seen there is a chart the Ivy's use to evaluate athletes. It gives a score based on your GPA, SAT, ACT, class rank. I cannot remember what it is called. But basically if I remember correctly a "normal" Ivy student's # is around 215 or higher. They allow a certain amount of athletes 200-210, 190-200, 180-190 and I think the lowest they allow is a 172. But there are only 1 or 2 of those players. If anyone can post what this chart is called...?? Also, just an FYI - normal...

Your velo has reached a level where an Ivy would be interested - but not close to the top of a recruiting class. Your ACT is fine. Your grades are the issue. For that to pass admissions, your HS better have an incredibly difficult curve, or have a narrative to explain the big difference between grades and scores. If you were the absolute top tier recruit (projected future Baseball America college all-star) for a school, the coach may be able to get you through admissions; otherwise probably...

Was going to say the same thing. Not too much attrition from the draft either as more seniors are drafted than juniors. Along Fenway's note, RipkenFanSon had a teammate who was hurt early senior year last year (game 4 of season). He's playing at USC for his 4th year of eligibility as a grad student. Duke had a grad student pitcher drafted last year who had earlier earned his Ivy degree from Princeton.

It sounds perfect for our high academic 2017, and so nice it will be in DC. For us, the timing may not work as the Diamond Nation 17U tournament is that same weekend (tourney is 6/19-6/24), and that is a tournament that normally pulls in quite a few high academic coaches as well. And sadly it is on our schedule for the summer. It will be another case of, you can't do both.

I actually think you most likely could do both - the Diamond Nation Tourney the 19th-22nd and then the showcase the 23rd/24th. It would depend on when the Diamond Nation games were and if the team you are playing for is strong enough that you'd think you'd be in the last few games (semis and final) as that would be one way you'd be assured that your team is at Diamond Nation (on their fields) and in front of a majority of the scouts in attendance. In summary, the answers to your Ivy questions are that he would have to walk-on after being admitted. The time for your son to receive athletic sponsorship and support from the Coach is past unless there are extenuating circumstances. He would have to apply (late), be admitted (late) and walk-on which is not going to be easy since the Regular Decision deadline was early Jan 2016. If he has been accepted and the D3 coach wants him & supported him through high academic admissions why are...

One was an Ivy. The dad had attended the Ivy for undergrad and law school. He couldn't manage any pull. The kid was told he had to get accepted outside baseball. He didn't. He ended up pitching in the A10. By senior year roster spots are typically filled. At an academically elite school the...

DaddyO just so you know, Fenway is the guy here. Even though I know much less than he's forgotten I'll wade into say 2 things. One, I think your son missed the boat. If he wants to play baseball at a top academic D1 I think his best option is to take a gap year and work in getting recruited for next year at Ivies, Patriot league schools, etc. With his academics, worst case scenario is that he has to go through the trouble of re-applying to the UC's and others again. His thoughts were that he didn't cast as big of a net as he should have, but the reality is that he was a borderline prospect 9 months ago who did not attend the camps that would have gotten him a look, and if he had he still would have not been the prospect he is now. He's applied to a few D3 schools with support, and has been honest with the coaches in that he is considering multiple schools. Most of the D1s have locked up their recruiting and spent the available scholarship dollars at this point for the 2016s and probably most 2017s, too. However, there are ~7+ players on each team that are not getting athletic scholarship dollars, and are vying for a spot. If your son gets his pitching numbers up, there could be an opportunity. I agree with JCG about the US News rankings. A student may have to make a choice between playing baseball or going to a top 50 ranked USN school without playing baseball. An aside - I understand that the OP's son isn't interested in a list of possibilities outside a top 50 school, yet for others reading this thread who are looking at colleges with a child, I want to point out that some students with a high ACT score and enough AP passing test scores make JuCo a non-possibility. He's got options to academically elite D3 schools as you described them, and an opportunity to play D3 baseball. That is nothing to sneeze at, and frankly an opportunity that not many people get. Considering the limited exposure your son demonstrated in front of college coaches, I'd say he got more than his fair share of attention if multiple coaches supported him.
