First off, is there a feature where one can search the forums? I can't seem to find that function anywhere and I have to think someone has asked this question already...but here it goes: Besides the obvious academic standards a player has to meet in order to be eligible to play in one of the AZ Fall Classic All-Academic tryout and game (Must have at least a 3.7 GPA OR an ACT score of 27 or higher OR SAT score of 1700 is the minimum for tests taken prior to Jan 2016. 1200 (new scoring system)...

This would be minor leagues and it's not dime signs. But it's definitely an oddity. Waconah Park in Pittsfield MA used to be a minor leagu field. I believe it's a FCNL field now. It's the oldest wooden baseball stadium structure in the country. My son's 13u travel team played a tournament there several years ago. The sun sets in left center. The hitter and catcher are blinded. It's the only place in the country baseball is stopped for a sunset delay. Go figure the team is called the...

FWIW -- I'm not sure of exact NCAA rule -- but the coaches are not able to talk to the players at the Junior Fall Classic. We learned about it last year...

Anyone with a 3.7 GPA or 1200 SAT (new version)/ 27 ACT score can apply for the tryout. Not everyone is picked for the tryout. Tryout consists of 60 yd. dash, defensive workout, and two rounds of hitting. A LOT of kids tryout but as Gov said they whittle the numbers down to two manageable teams. Any idea how they "select" the ones to tryout? Do they base it on academics? Clearly they haven't seen the kids play so can not be based on skills. Has anyone heard any kids got denied? So far anyone who applied seemed to have been selected to tryout. Other question (I remember it's already discussed somewhere): it seems logical that if you are aiming for D1 you go to the Junior event; if you aim for D3 you go to the Senior event. True?

I had an email exchange with the tournament owner before the 2015 Jr. Classic, and she told me that they had not turned away anyone up to that point for the Jr. Classic, though they do for the Sr. Classic. I do not know what their criteria are. Test scores + reputation of kid's travel team? Just a guess. As for your second question, that makes sense if you assume that most D1 schools have gotten all their commits for the following year by the time of the Sr event, and that D3 schools don't...

Bogey, to be selected for the tryout they review academics and skills video. I was told it's easier to gain entry to the Junior HS event because people are just learning about the event and the players don't have enough graded semesters for the high academic colleges to be looking seriously at them. For the Senior HS event you'll have more kids scrambling to be seen due to their short time line to get an offer. Good for the D3's, it's a one day or weekend event to get a last look to fill...

There's likely some truth to the D1 jr classic/D3 sr. classic distinction. However, my 2017 got some mid-major D1 interest coming out of this year's sr. classic, and several D3s got in touch with him as well, both at the event and by email a few days later. Gov, how did the skills video work? We didn't submit any for the tryout; wondering if it might have been useful to get selected for the actual game.

It was an item asked for on the application. We figured we'd include the video to increase the odds of being selected. I'm not sure if it influenced his selection for the game or not... I guess it could have put him on the radar... At the tryout he performed well and it's a small pond in a way - kids with a 3.7 that can play. The Academic try-out / all-star game is a A+ event. My son did it in 2014 . Lots of schools and yes, the coaches do not speak to the rising Jrs. But they do email. Uncommitted guys need to follow up w/ emails to coaches in attendance. Expressing interest in the schools and updating them on standardized testing prep work or test scores

I definitely think there is something to this. My son, a 2018, attended the Senior event and, while their were a pretty good number of recruiters watching when he pitched, the only D1's I spotted were schools there because we had pre-arranged it. The VAST majority standing there were from D2's, D3's and JC's - lots of JC's.

Chairman I hope you had a great time in Welland. yes thyere are not enough good players to make 30 Elite teams that is probably true. I look at the program not how strong thye teams are. We produce some great talent here who go on to all levels of college and sign minor leagu contracts. My son wanted to play in the south,Florida or Vegas. That was our choice. Same thought... actually, I never fully understood the idea of committing to a D3 school where you are not academically accepted yet. The wise advice always given here is to keep the foot on the pedal until there is a reasonable level of certainty (even then, keep doors and communication lines open). Cabbage Dad just my 2cents but here goes just 1 reason to "commit" -- if a player has multiple offers of admission support for a D3 (even those very few elite hA without slots), they can only ED to one school (true for any ED school whether D1 or D3). You can apply internationally, to military academies I believe and also to state universities. So once the player opts to apply ED to their top choice, they let the other schools know they have made a choice and those other offers tend to go...

I'm mostly inline with 2Boys, but I can see a tiny bit of wiggle room. First of all you have to apply for the All Academic game tryout, and to submit that with incorrect info would not be an honest choice or fair to other applicants. To Adbono's point, a commitment to a D3 college _is_ a commitment, once the ED app is in. You're signing a contract that says you will attend that school if admitted (absent some limited mitigation circumstances.) But that said, if ED app is not in, and taking...

Thanks guys, very informative. I learned some things. Still, it seems that this player is not yet to the point where it wouldn't make sense to keep opening doors as backup. And, I'm not sure why the coach at school A would be upset if the acceptance is far from a sure thing.

We use the word "committed" for D3 recruiting but I don't think the players are committed until the school officially accepts them when their ED decisions go out in Dec. Submitting an application ED does not mean the student/player has to withdraw all other applications - that does not have to happen until they are accepted by their ED school (I googled just to be sure). Non-baseball playing students are allowed to submit applications to additional schools as back-up in case they are not...

What would be the point of going and communicating with new schools? To let them know you'd love for them to be a backup option? If he doesn't get in he can always apply to other schools, explain the situation and show up the first day of tryouts. If you're good enough they'll keep you, they don't have scholarship guys to account for. I am again probably showing my relative ignorance with D3 as I certainly have more direct experience with the other levels. Still, I have had a fair number of players from our program end up going D3. Most of those players still considered baseball to be a very big part of the equation. Again, the OP says acceptance is far from a sure thing. With recruiting at other levels, coaches generally would be more than happy to take a drop down should things not work out at the player's first choice.

So the real question is, did your son have more options before he committed to this one school for ED? And if so, what were those options? With extremely selective schools, ED is almost a necessity for admission (and even then doesn't always work); so, backups need either to be schools with ED2 where coaches can give support, or schools where he could be admitted RD without official coach support. Keep your foot on the gas. Did your son go the classic and academic game as a junior? Then you know that that tryout is a meat market, and the senior event may be even more crowded. If you're worried about your son being accepted ED, then go. A coach at a school with no slots will understand your concern. I'd also let other coaches know your kid is gonna be there. You've submitted a pre-read in good faith. Your son will be submitting an ED application in good faith, yet there are no guarantees by admissions or the coach your son will be admitted. The risk is all on your son, and for this reason I would attend the showcase for the purposes of possible RD application to another school. I think it is better to keep all options open , as you never know what can transpire. Especially if you are close to the event. It is a cool event. We had "almost" commited last year at this time but still went. My son wanted to keep his options open. He made the academic game(pitcher) last year after being extremely dissapointed as a junior and not making it. The topic for discussion is LEADERSHIP. That intangible quality that most people think they have and very few actually have it. The US Army spent a great deal of time with me and my fellow ROTC grads during my "training" during the Vietnam war days trying to pin down that elusive quality for their future officers and leaders. thats a good point. but the thing is i wasn't really highly recruited out of high school. i improved drastically in Dominican republic.. I'm also considering attending a D1 and walking on but I'm not really sure what to do. i just need to go somewhere where i can play. you see?

What has the coach at St. Thomas Aquanis told you specifically about your opportunity there? Did he give you a portion of an athletic scholarship? Are you talking about the D2 ST Thomas Aquanis in New Hampshire? If so, why did you choose to play baseball at a cold weather school?

No. St Thomas Aquinas College in NY. I actually have a cousin that plays professional baseball Pedro Beato. He knows the coach there so he recommended me to go there. It's a place that will guarantee me playing time. It's close to where I live also

He told me it doesn't have to be D1. Sometimes d1 isn't the best option. Just need to go to a school that offers me playing time.

Keep improving your velocity and try to be one of the top pitchers in your league. Get help in getting the word out to scouts. If you have pro-stuff, they will definitely take a look at you - especially a lefty with good stuff. Important thing is that you improve because an 18 year old freshman lefty with the same stuff will be looked at much closer in terms of projectability than a freshman going on 21. Good luck - you never know how much further your hard work will take you.

Yea. The fact that he's played in the majors I think will help when it comes to getting some looks. He knows a lot of people. But I'm going to continue to work hard to try to throw 92 asap. Anyways thank you for your time

If you attend a Div 1 or 2 program, you can be drafted at 21 depending on your birthdate. So you do not have to put in 3 years. We have never seen you pitch so we cant give opinions on the draft, but you do sound like you have the skills. Best of luck.

Yeah. I worked very hard in the Dominican Republic. I went there throwing 76 and came back theowing 87-88. And I'm going to continue to work hard. Also would I have to get drafted when I'm 21 and can i also get drafted as a 22 year old ?

Find someone who has had TJ surgery, ask for their rehab program, and work that into your pitching workouts (if you are not doing this already). Protect that arm. Oh, and get good grades and graduate, just in case.

As a pitcher if you throw 90 plus and you can throw strikes you have a chance. I would suggest doing a program like driveline or wolforth that has a reputation of increasing velocity

90-91 is a good target for college. If you want to go pro you have to aim higher. Remember you're not going to be twenty-one in three years. You're going to need to be further along if you want to be a prospect.

I understand. But I'm a lefty. I don't necessarily have to throw as hard as righties. I did some research and saw a lot of lefties touching 90 and good change up and curve and are projected to be drafted in the 4th and 5th rounds. So I definitely want to aim a little higher as far as velocity is concerned but honestly I feel I do have a chance to go pro. As long as I work hard and believe in myself no one can stop me

If you really want to get drafted you should be going to a JUCO because as RJM said you will be 23 in 3 years and your projection might be on a downhill curve at that time and where you think you should be drafted more than likely may not happen. Also, while you say it doesn't matter playing D2 vs D1 that is an untruth. While you are at 87-88, no one can predict that you would be even at 90. Josten Beato. Based on your own description, you definitely have a good chance. 6'4 lefty with MLB average fastball and two other quality pitches will get you drafted or signed. Work on mastering all your pitches. Lefties with one plus MLB out pitch that they can command often have long careers. Try to get into a summer college league. Best of luck
