VaDad, It's not particulary fair to characterize Mansfield's sophomore year at Coastal as "lackluster". More accurate is that he wasn't given a chance which is not unusual in CCU's program. He was on the team for one half of the year and only pitched 3 or 4 innings as memory serves. Because of his outstanding academics, Brian was offered a lucrative internship out of state. There was a deadline involved that prevented him from doing both baseball and the internship. We all know what his...

Re: College Head Coaching Requirements

TPM ·
They are called volunteer assistant coaches and usually given free tuition, room board and meals. It's like an internship. Bradley LeCroy was the volunteer at Clemson when son came, left for paid assistant coach at Western and now the assistant at UT. I know that son's HC prefers former players who want to coach as volunteer assistants. HC's of larger programs usually have to have some form of education in a degree and I think a master's degree is required but does not have to be in education.

I am a big fan of summer ball for many reasons...the biggest one being it is a life experience... simply not to be missed. But I don’t think that it is as simple as “you can’t miss it, always play”. I don’t think it is for everybody, every year. I believe that you have to...Know the reality. Know your player/purpose. Know your league.

Great topic guys. I've been traveling the last two weekends with my son visiting schools and wondering where the boundaries of our we and I roles are. I guess we've taken a business model approach to it. Hey all...I'm still here don't go worrying about me! I've learned a few things so far this summer. #1- both hands on the wheel and eyes open when driving on the backroads at 3 AM. The deer luckily only hit the front driver's side of my car and didn't really cause any serious structural damage. Thank goodness for hokieone's car otherwise I may have been stranded in the valley! Re: D1 versus D2/D3

JPontiac ·
My experience at D3 is that if you go in with a D1 mindset, you are at risk. What I mean by this is that a lot of guys see baseball as a primary motivator for going to college. If you're a D1 athlete receiving money to play baseball, it logically takes a spot almost higher than academics at times in your priorities. At most D3 schools, the mindset is not the same. Guys play baseball because they love it but also know that sometimes school work (especially labs or grad school interviews!)...

Possibly, Jemaz, but I've seen the advice in enough forms in enough posts that I think I read it correctly. As BOF said earlier, he has made this pitch about a million times. I know the tune. Did you ever notice that nobody ever suggests a young man should pick the school where he'd want to spend four years regardless of money, major, geography, or campus culture? You only hear this advice applied to baseball. Why is that? Well, I came up with three reasons this advice might be offered: 1)...

The first round of role models for kids should be their parents and other family. This means the parents have to walk the walk. They have to live the way they wnat their kids to evolve. Next comes people in the community who carry themselves properly. I've pointed out athletes for how they play the game and seperated it from how they live their lives. Allen Iverson bought his mother a house in our neighborhood. My son knew AI was an a$$ from observation. But he admired he was tough going...

I don’t really need to get much of an update from him very often, just ask how things are going both in school and in baseball. I already know his routine, and don’t really worry about “stuff” other than he stays healthy. I mention something regarding summer ball, because of the experience with my son and some of his friends, D1-D3. Kids are getting placed now so this is appropriate.
