I love this thread. 20dad, Sorry to hear about your son, but this is a perfect example how the dream can end suddenly. Need to take care of that arm folks! iitg, I do hear that players who played minor league never let go, good times through bad times, it is something that stays with you forever. As told to son, compare it to a doctor's internship, long hours, ****** pay, you either stick with it or you don't. My daughter knows of a few players who are strictly organizational guys, make...

I keep forgetting to check the ladies forum! Am glad I stopped by here tonight. Hilarious stories mixed with poignant reminders of what I face in less than 2 years. Our family checked out an out-of-town college last weekend and son stayed with family friend's son who is a junior and shares a house with 3 other guys. It was sooooo interesting to see everything firsthand. The grass was by far the highest on the block and there were dirty dishes everywhere, but the guys were having a blast...

My sentiment, exactly, after I thought about it some more. We've never been shy about spending bucks on AAU, travel, hotels, travel to legion tourneys, hotels on the road for college...so why start now. Besides, during the day, he will have a chance to do his internship for his Sport Mgt degree.

Re: Expectations

fenwaysouth ·
My son is a freshmen pitcher at a mid to lower D1 program. His goal and expectation was that it was going to be fairly easy to find a D1 baseball program with top academics. Nothing could have been further from the truth from our experience. It was a vastly different experience than what we expected, and the journey took us off course a few times. After a few months of frustration and mistakes, we circled back to the original goals and that is when things started happening in spades. Program...

Wow, so glad to see this posted! The same thing happened to me in high school. My HS years were some of the most brutal, and why? Because I didn't drink. Guess how I decided to make things better for myself in college? I see the same thing happening today, to my own boys. Not so much in HS here, but certainly the eldest's first two years of college were tainted by exactly this situation. Shunned. "Hey, there, whatcha doin'?" "Sitting in my room." "Oh. Re: What to look for in a strength and speed coach?

2Bmom ·
Bas3balldad, my son is in the same boat. We have so far been really lucky with trainers. The speed coach we knew, and the strength coach we sort of stumbled upon. Each works/ed with 2B 1 or 2 times a week, and he has "homework" that he does on his own. The speed coach was a player that went to his HS, ran a 6.19 at PG, and last year broke the Royals minor league stolen bases record. When we heard he was available, there was no question we'd sign up. It was extremely inexpensive because he is...

Re: Can competitive athletes be developed this way?

RJM ·
My kids are competitive athletes as much as anyone. If they ever told me they go to school to play ball I'd take sports away from them until they get their priorities in order. The only time this statement would be reasonably acceptible would be in a major college program with an opportunity to be a top twenty round draft choice. But the education would still be very important. My son will be missing one high school game to attend his sister's college graduation. He doesn't have a choice. He...

I'm currently doing my coaching internship in NY state and I played here in High School as well. Practices do not officially start until the second week in March, however a lot of teams find places to go in the winter time to work on hitting and fielding. Once practices begin, we are in the gym until early April at the latest. April 5th was actually are first scheduled game this year and we were able to play it. From there on you are usually outside for the rest of the year. As for talent...

I'm currently doing my coaching internship with Albion's JV Team in NY. We are 13-0 so far this season and so is the Varsity program. To be honest, it seems like JV baseball is place don the back burner. We play in a weak league so any team we play, their good players are already up on Varsity. It's shown because in our 10 league games so far, we are outscoring opponents 204 to 40 with an average score of 20.4 to 4.. There is no competition at all..

Re: A dose of reality.....

infielddad ·
O'44, your comments are an amazingly accurate description of the mental transition that challenges players at every step once they are beyond HS. Whether the challenge is college baseball, Milb, or college then Milb, those mental challenges are the one constant. They can, frankly, in our experience, exhilarate some and move/motivate them to higher levels while proving to deflate others to a point of being stopped and ineffective. And the challenges change from year to year. The number of...

Re: A dose of reality.....

rz1 ·
B, I definitely see the direction you are going with this and from a baseball perspective agree to a point. However, do you think that most players who "lived" the MiLB life for a year could go back and adjust to college life/rules both on and off the field? I tend to look at MiLB life as an apprenticeship to their life long job career whatever that may be. Then again being a lefty from the North, tagged a hick by a poster, I tend to read the page from right to left.

Re: A dose of reality.....

infielddad ·
rz1, Great question. My tendency is to think that if there were a Milb college internship in baseball, most players would find out if they have the passion and mental discipline to want to play and do whatever it takes. My guess is a considerable number would find baseball isn't for them. Whether they would return to college, "free of baseball" is a dilemma. I think most would. Those who found baseball really is a "passion," during that internship, would go to college even more motivated and...

Rhodes had a pretty crazy and certainly not all bad tournament, although we were eliminated last night. We started off by beating Hendrix on the strength of a great complete game performance by our ace. We kept rolling by beating Oglethorpe in the aforementioned 21 inning thriller. We started our #2 who was coming off an injury, and he had to exit early after just not being 100% healed. We then had a solid relief effort from one of our top set up guys for 2 and a third, followed by a 10 and...

I'm sorry, but I don't see how minor league baseball is any different than an internship in other fields? I wish I could feel sorry for those ball players making $700-1000 a month plus food money plus in the league I am currently working with, they live with a host family. Meanwhile, I am an intern making all of $0 paying for my gas to get there each day and working near-full time for nothing which makes it difficult for me to work at a job actually making money. I don't see the problem with a young player making more than the ten-year guy because in the real working world, the next generation of worker tends to make more more than the past generation (all things being equal). However, a rookie cap isn't a bad idea. Let them earn their big payday in the pros. As for the minor league pay, it's not great but players know this when they choose this profession. As somebody previouisly mentioned, it's like an internship to play in the big leagues so...

Krak, My son did not go to a D3 and had the same relationship with some of his profs too. He also chose where he went to for small prof/student ratio, as he had been in a program in HS with small teacher/student ratio. Did he get a better education than he would have at a D3? I don't know. Sometimes it's just about taking advantage of opportunities. I do know one thing, he would have liked to have taken on engineering, they wouldn't let him, and I suppoose that may be a big difference...

Re: All-Time All-District Teams

cpkebaseballdad ·
VaDad, It's not particulary fair to characterize Mansfield's sophomore year at Coastal as "lackluster". More accurate is that he wasn't given a chance which is not unusual in CCU's program. He was on the team for one half of the year and only pitched 3 or 4 innings as memory serves. Because of his outstanding academics, Brian was offered a lucrative internship out of state. There was a deadline involved that prevented him from doing both baseball and the internship. We all know what his...
