How to get on the radar of schools from October - March?

used2lurk ·
All, New poster here but have been lurking for a while. Thank you to all who are active and provide tons of insights to those like me. I have a 2022 who loves to catch and can play anywhere but MI. He has done one PBR here locally. He is a bigger kid who has some power and have heard from more than one baseball person that he has D1 potential (whatever that means). He is flexible and athletic at 6'3" 185 and is getting measurably faster and stronger now that he is working with a strength and...

Appeared he was being drafted, met with team several times, negotiated an offer...on/off shoulder problems since 9th grade. Missed his jr year with ulnar transposition surgery. Had a great sr year, but towards end shoulder pain increased. Dx with tendonitis (altho they did no testing). Tried to rehab that summer but pain continued. As mentioned, he...

Catchers - cup recommendations?

Fan2024 ·
My soon-to-be 13 year old son has been wearing nutty buddy cups since he was 8. Sadly, they have been unavailable since March '18, with no sign of being back any time soon, and he really needs a new one. Any cup brand recommendations? I saw that "Nutshellz" are popular with pros, but they are also crazy expensive ($100!!??). Thanks in advance for your help.

PG Pitcher/Catcher IA showcase

We haven't done much in the way of showcases or camps. His club team hosts a couple of organized exposure "clinics/camps" where they invite several D1, D2 schools to attend which the majority of them do. Catcher's Equipment, opinions for a Freshman

14yo will be Freshman in August. Wants to play HS ball, in addition to his travel team, so this gear will be put to serious use. He is 5'7" 140 solid-as-a-rock pounds. He's only been catching for a few months, but he loves it, and is good enough that it's now his main position. He's been using his Schutt gear, which we picked up for a good price when they were at a tourney. But we bought it having no idea that catching would become his go-to position, rather than SS and OF. Pitchout Play Rarely Called

hitting4dudes ·
There are multiple scenarios in baseball that call for certain strategies. The pitchout play being one of them. Whether I am watching MLB or youth and HS baseball, I just do not see the pitch out being executed. Some folks say they don't run as much as they used to in MLB, which is true. Sometimes they say HS and youth pitchers are not able to perform the task at hand. In my opinion it's not really an issue in MLB. You could probably watch about 10 games and see them pitchout in 1, maybe 2...

Wesley, As a 16 year old, you have a good base to work with. I would recommend three things immediately: 1. Lose the Knee Savers. This should allow you to get lower in your stance. Also along that line...get more flexible in your hip flexors. Take a yoga class. You have a pretty good sized frame and you will need to present a low target at times. Flexibility is very important. 2. Find a long toss or arm strengthening/stabilizing program. We use Jamie Evans' Velo-City (...

Re: Traditional Catchers Mask

MidAtlanticDad ·
EStroup008, I'm the father of a former catcher. When you say "better", that means safer to me. Surprisingly, there are very few studies on this topic. The best one I have found is below. My layman's interpretation of the data is that both styles offer similar protection from balls hitting the mask directly on the nose. For catchers, that's where I worry most about concussions. Getting hit by a bat or being involved in a collision are also possibilities, and the hockey style is better in...

Re: Traditional Catchers Mask

Read it! ·
I have played with both, and so has my son who is now a Jr. in HS. We both prefer the hockey style because it is more balanced on our heads, making it easier to move quickly. The traditional mask tends to be heavy on the front side. However, it's really just a personal preference. Whichever one feels better to you and makes you more comfortable while doing the work would be the best choice. Before spending the money, though, see if you can borrow one for a game and try it out. Getting a feel...

If you are playing under NFHS, which is the most common rule set for high school - a skullcap / mask combo is not allowed. It has to be a one piece design that covers both ears, and which meets NOCSAE standards.

Coach Rick ·
I have had three concussions while catching. None from a foul ball to the mask. I have used both style masks; hockey (plastic) and old-style (steel). I always felt that the old style mask with helmet afforded me better protection from foul balls due to more heavy padding surrounding the face. It will fly off on the most direct hits, reducing the impact. In fact, my worst foul was a direct hit when I was wearing the hockey-style mask. Backswings are a greater problem than head injury. I have...

I would strongly recommend seeing a doctor. Consistent pain when throwing indicates a problem. Your body is sending a message. Don't ignore it.

Re: Throwing Elbow and Shoulder Pain.

Golfman25 ·
You definitely should seek medical attention. Do you have a trainer at school? At kids school they would get you evaluated by tye trainer first, then if necessary send you to the ortho. On the positive side, since you have pain in several locations it would seem like general irritation and inflammation. Not some thing catastrophic like ucl tear. Get it checked out and let the pros guide you. Good luck.

Re: Throwing Elbow and Shoulder Pain.

2forU ·
When it hurts, shut it down. You only have one throwing arm, when it's gone, so are you. Talk to your coach, athletic trainer, or doctor. Short term disruptions should not derail your long term plans, but they might if you wait too long.
