NAIA moving to a D2

jonsmith ·
My son is looking at a school that is currently a NAIA school. In the year 2017, the school will become a D2 school. When does the D2 recruiting guidelines take effect. My son is a senior this year and we are wondering if this school will follow NAIA or D2 guidelines?

Best showcases for Canadian catcher

John S ·
Hi folks -- We're based in Toronto (so not in the HS baseball mainstream), and my son is a catcher in his junior year who is aspiring to play U.S. college baseball. We'd like to attend one or two showcases this summer, and are just wondering if any of you could recommend what our best choice(s) might be. My son would like to study sports management, and we're targeting a variety of D1, D2, D3 and NAIA schools. What showcase would give us the best bang for the buck? Thanks very much for your ...

The school might provide an institutional "letter of intent" to prospects during their transition period, but they won't be able to offer an NCAA Letter of Intent to prospects until they officially become an NCAA Division II school.

Be aware that there is a transition phase which usually results in the school being ineligible for post-season play for a couple years.

I had similar questions, here is the thread: http://community.hsbaseballweb...19#35365985188449319 Son is a 2017 as well and the school just reclassified last month. There is a two year waiting period for post-season play, so this year (our kids' high school senior year) and next year (their college freshman year) they will not be eligible for post season. This may be different for different schools and/or conferences.

Thanks for you replies - that's helpful. Just wondering about NLI signing, my guess that would not be one to sign since they won't be a D2 until next year and the NLI signing would be this school year.

This may help. He will probably not sign an NCAA letter of intent, but the school may have something. http://www.naia.org/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=208532562

Just to get this moving along... I know NYIT is dropping down to D2 from D1. I don't know of any NAIA teams moving as of right now.

I know in my area the migration from Naia to D2 is mostly complete. The schools that were gonna moved, have moved. Those that are still NAIA are staying there. Now there has been some migration, from the Gliac to other leagues. But I believe the NAIA to D2, is mostly over in these parts.

BBPlayer22, the following NCAA actions are effective Sept. 1: Cal State San Marcos, Concordia - Irvine, Concordia-Portland, Embry-Riddle (Florida), and Oklahoma Baptist become active D2 members. Westminster College in Utah moves to year 3 of the D2 transition period toward active membership. Auburn Univ-Montgomery, Biola Univ, Davenport Univ, and Purdue U Northwest move to year 2 of the D2 transition period. Also, as NYDAD mentioned, NYIT was approved as an active D2 member for this year.

A couple of D2 to D1 moves are also in the works: (1) Cal Baptist: www.cbulancers.com/news/2017/1...e.aspx?path=baseball (2) UCSD: http://ucsdguardian.org/2017/0...uture-for-going-d-1/ This is a good thing. We need more D1 baseball in California -- only 23 of the 295 D1 baseball schools are in California.

Re: Best showcases for Canadian catcher

RJM ·
You don’t target every college program there is. You need to have an idea where he potentially fits in. Otherwise you will waste thousands of dollars on the wrong showcases. You don't just throw spaghetti off the wall to see what sticks. He needs to sit down with a baseball knowledgeable person who knows his game. They need to determine what level of college ball he might be able to play. Then you pick conferences at that level. Then you determine which schools in the conferences would also...

John S, RJM is spot on. Your son starts by creating a vetted list of colleges that are a fit for him. Vetted academically and athletically by him, you, his coaches, his guidance counselor, scouts, other third parties, etc. Once that list is compiled, he reaches out to the baseball coaches and the admissions reps of the schools on his list. Engaging the baseball coaches is always important. Engaging the Admissions reps and expressing interest is particularly important at D3 and at schools...

Agreed. This NEEDS to be changed. Baseball and Basketball need to be in line with football. The scholarship limits for D1 baseball is egregious as well.

The only explanation I can offer is that it points to the powerful lobby of the major D1 football coaches and ADs. The Coaches Associations of the various sports play a big role in this I believe. Also, the tide may be gradually turning. Division I wrestling now has an exception that's available only in a wrestler's freshman year with a D1 program. Division II football also now has a rule somewhat like D1, but it's limited to 3 games in a D2 football athlete's freshman year only.

Still boggles my mind why redshirt rule in football is different. Anyone have a good reasonable explanation why you can play up to X games in football and still eligible to redshirt but just 1 second on the field for baseball and you lose that eligibility? I assume all other sports is the same as baseball, and only football is special?

Re: Redshirt Rules 101

HSDad22 ·
Agree, and this one really sucks. NCAA Division III To redshirt at the NCAA Division III level, the athlete must completely remove themselves from the team before the first game or contest of the season. The D3 rules charge a “season of participation” if an athlete is practicing with their team once the season begins, even if the athlete never appears in a game for their team during the season.

@Rick at Informed Athlete Hi Rick, can you help explain to me the rules around DIII medical redshirt. Son got injured during practice a few days before the season starts. Does he have to have zero affiliation with the team during a medical redshirt? Ie trip to florida, etc.

Re: Redshirt Rules 101

Rick at Informed Athlete ·
Having "zero affiliation with the team" is only necessary to redshirt as a D3 athlete if no season-ending injury or illness is involved. If your son's injury is serious enough to be a "season-ending" injury as determined by a doctor, your son doesn't have to separate from the team.
