Maintaining a New Catchers Mitt
Hi this is my first post on this forum and I just had a few questions about forming and maintaining my new glove. I purchased a Rawlings Pro Preferred this past weekend http://www.rawlingsgear.com/baseball/baseball-gloves/proscm41mo.html and...

Rawlings Velo composite wood bat
Does anyone have any experience (short term or long term) with the Rawlings Velo composite? (Bamboo & maple, I believe.). I really like the feel of it, but I'm worried about longevity. I imagine it's pretty similar in regards to all maple bats, but I thought I'd ask. Any impressions of said bat? Good or bad.

Rawlings revo in high school?
So I'm going into high school and I am looking at catchers mitts... Can a Rawlings revo last in high school a couple years, I want it to last two years will it last is the quality high enough?

Re: Rawlings revo in high school?
Rawlings has several levels in the Revo line, the 950 series being the best (thickest leather that will hold up to heavy use). Still, the leather in this series is not as thick as their Pro Preferred or Heart of the Hide. It's hard to put a time stamp on it... some play a lot more than others over two years with travel, fall ball, lessons, etc. outside of HS season. Also, some take better care than others (leaving a ball int the pocket and leaving it indoors/in protective bag, etc.) I'd say...

Not going to hold up very long for heavy use (if you are going to be a regular HS catcher, catching bullpens all the time and playing outside of the school season). Of course, the plus side is quicker break-in and you can afford to buy another sooner

Re: Rawlings revo in high school?
So what kind of a glove would you suggest? Would yousuggest buying a new one every year?

Re: Rawlings revo in high school?
All Star CM3000 (CM3100 if it doesn't see a lot of use) Mizuno GXC10 Wilson A2000 Rawlings Pro Preferred (or SLP custom shop custom, non-broken in, from Eastbay) Rawlings HOH SSK or Glovesmith customs (without factory break-in)

Re: Rawlings revo in high school?
good list by wilson and, no, i would not suggest new every year if you can afford a better mitt. The longer break-in period will pay off in the long run - you'll have a glove that will hold it's shape far longer.

Is the SSK being almost 30 dollars cheaper a better buy? In your opinion which is the best on the list?

Re: Rawlings revo in high school?
The problem with less expensive gloves and nearly all gloves sold in sporting goods stores is that they're somewhat pre-broken in, and heavily impregnated with oil (which trashes the leather IMNHO). My son went through a Rawlings first base mitt in 2 months, till the point it was floppy and would have problems with scooping up balls. He now has a custom Glovesmith made from CRS leather that was a bear to break-in but it's now on it's 2nd full season and works wonderfully. I had a catchers...

Does this glove break in similar to the pudge a2000 because I love the way that aso breaks those in could it be broken in like that glove and it could last me my entire high school career?

Re: Rawlings revo in high school?
The CM3100? I don't think it would last 4 years as an everyday glove, two maybe. It is somewhat broken-in at the factory. I don't know if any of the gloves mentioned would last 4 years of high school baseball plus summer and fall ball. As for Aso, you can break-in any glove like he does. I used one of my son's broken wood bats as a mallet (just shaped the broken end on the lathe to make a handle) to help him break in his Mizuno. You still need to play lots of catch though to get it just...

YOU SHOULD GET THE A2000 OR A2K PUDGE CATCHERS MITT THEY MIGHT BE A LITTLE EXPENSIVE BUT THEY CAN LAST FOR A WHILE AND VERY GOOD QUALITLY FOR HIGHSCHOOL .

So wilson have you ever used a glove other than those all stars like maybe an a2000 or an akadema?

Re: Rawlings revo in high school?
My sons Rawlings Revo lasted 4 months of normal HS use, Jan - May. The leather tore from regular use. Wont be buying another one. It was a 950. The good thing is Rawlings has agreed to replace it with a pro-prefered glove at a pro-rated price.

Re: Rawlings revo in high school?
ok so I made a deal with my parents and grandparents they said if I made a team as a freshman they will buy me any baseball glove that I want money not being an issue, so I am looking at the pudge a2k, a pro preferred or a primo. Which is the best of these, are there any other?

Re: Rawlings revo in high school?
awesome deal! three great choices. Primo tends to be a bit heavy, although I have not put the catcher's mitt on my hand. I would put all three on your hand and see which feels better, with consideration to weight, and go for it.

Re: Rawlings revo in high school?
What size glove do you want? The Pudge is a 32", that may not be the best option for you, depends on how good you are. My son is new to catching (HS coach is converting him) and is using a Mizuno GXC10 picked up from the auction site at a very attractive price. My mitt is a mid-level Rawlings but I might be getting something else (in a 34" mitt) since mine is now pretty worn out. I would probably avoid the Primo because of weight. We have a high-end baseball store in the area and so we have...

Re: Rawlings revo in high school?
Gonna add my little piece to this party. I have a custom a2000 ordered it pro stiff. Got it Christmas of this year, beat it to gods end with a mallet, and caught bullpens with it. I hurt my knee 12 games into my year, but was back for the playoffs, and caught 2 then. Over this summer I have been catching for my JV Summer Team. Caught probably 10 games with 5 bullpens mixed here and there. And my glove is just now getting where I want it to be. So high quality glove = long break in BUT much...

Re: Maintaining a New Catchers Mitt
Sounds like the glove will get enough reps to break in fairly quick. All of this will be in my opinion. Don't do anything to accellerate the breaking in period. Games, bullpens, catching off a machine will break it in properly with your hand in it. Stay away from petroleum based oils or creams. I love using Lexol on mine. You can buy it at auto part stores, hardware stores, etc. It's a leather conditioner, very lite. Won't build up or add weight to the leather. Apply as needed, when it dries...

Re: Maintaining a New Catchers Mitt
At the PG tourney in Ft. Myers there was a company called "Webgem" that has a product that is basically a hard plastic form that you place in the glove and a neoprene bag that you keep it in when not using it. Because my son has a habit of turning his gloves into pancakes, I bought one of the "webgems" to see if it will help keep his glove in proper shape. Google it to see if it is something that you may be interested in.

Re: Maintaining a New Catchers Mitt
I like Lexol Conditioner to aid in breaking in a glove, just apply a little bit to those areas that you want to flex. As you use your glove during the season apply a little Lexol Conditioner to the whole glove, especially the laces (they get brittle and break when they dry out). Dirt is the enemy of your catchers mitt, so wipe off the glove with a towel (damp is best) after each use. Once the glove is dry, take a medium bristle brush and brush off any caked on dirt, pay special attention to...

Re: Maintaining a New Catchers Mitt
we are trying something new. a friend works with leather and suggested it. after each game, a long wipe to get the dirt off. every other week of so, rub a little pure lanolin on the dry areas and/or flex points. good so far. it takes very little (half of a dime size dollop for whole glove). it goes far. Lanolin is in Lexol (previously mentioned). You can find it at drug stores in the nursing section.

My son has been using the Web Gem mold and bag for about a month now. I am a believer. Glove looks great. Also on the advice of their literature he stopped keeping it in his bag in the garage.
