Re: Why wasn't my son Drafted?

PGStaff ·
Kind of wished I hadn't used the word nepotism. Of course, that will always be around. RJM, that Ford Motor company list is great. To those that believe the system is just fine. I stated I'm a big believer in bloodlines being an advantage. In most cases I have no problem with drafting relatives. In many cases these relatives are very deserving players. In most cases we have seen those players. We actually see over 80% of all the drafted players before they are drafted. We have stories that...

lafmom, My youngest son recieved lots of mail from colleges, some very good and some were a joke. One big name D1 school from Fl. started sending him the standard form letters that they send to about 5000 kids and all the form letters were tossed. For about a year after he was already in college the form letters from this school would still arrive every once in a while, as I guess they had not spit his name out of their computer yet. The funny thing was that all the form letters were sent to...

njbb ... You have nailed that so well. I sincerely believe that it takes a very special lady who loves her husband enough that she can set some of her own goals aside so he can follow his dream. It is fun to watch these gals, especially when you have a chance to meet them and 'follow' them over the course of several seasons. And as the level gets higher, and the couples get older, we have fun watching these young couples bringing little ones into the world, somehow juggling their querky...

Re: Bat Tipping

deemax ·
IMO its good. Im not sure if there is a best way. One cue that I have used that has got results from some of my students is to tip the bat toward the pitcher during your load without using your wrist to do so. I will also use throwing a punch as an example, and load them into different punching positions and see what feels more powerful to them, while encouraging them to hide this punch from the pitcher. A players aptitude will dictate how I describe this "tip n' rip" (a registered trademark...

I thought I posted something here? It disappeared! I'll try again... Jimmy Rollins was drafted in the 2nd rd out of high school in 1996 (46th pick overall) and he was the NL MVP in 2007. Dustin Pedroia was drafted in the 2nd rd out of Arizona State in 2004. (65th pick overall) He was one of the best players in Arizona State history and a first team all American there. PG - great post! Some off the cuff stuff here since it is cold outside and waiting for the SB! I do believe there are fair opportunities in the minor leagues for non-bonus guys. bbscout used to say that if you hit .300 every year and at each level that you will eventually find yourself in the big leagues. That may be true, but I agree that there is luck involved as well. Billy McMillan was a great college player at Clemson and a career .300 hitter in the minors yet his big league career...

Re: PG? Or anyone ? Help with Area Code Tryouts

06catcherdad ·
I cannot speak for how the Reds run their tryouts in the four corners region, but for northern California, a player must be recommended by an MLB affiliated scout in order to receive an invitation to the tryout, which is usually held right at the beginning of July. The Milwaukee Brewers handle California (though there is some speculation that they may drop one team which will go to another national league club to select and run) and they have the final say on who receives a tryout...

Coach O'Connor, Kuhn and McMillan are "total class" --- and they appear to recruit players in terms of talent but also in consideration of team chemistry --- The baseball players at UVA are typically very humble, quiet and hard working.....As a parent whose kid plays on the team --- I could not be happier with our son's decision. Not to mention, their facilities and overall education offered is top rate.

I'll take a shot since I don't believe there are any other Bloomington/Normal posters on here. B/N essentially has a Legion type of set up, though no longer affiliated with American Legion. New organization run by a Board made up of players' parents. Last summer had 3 18u teams and 4 16u teams. Made up of players from B/N's five high schools: Bloomington, Central Catholic, Normal, Normal West and University High. I assume tryouts will be in April, as they were in 2005. Head coach of...

Let post ONE more time about this... My disagreement with Texan is NOT his statement that select ball is more competitive than HS ball (althought I think that is too broad of a statement). My disagreement was with his statement that HS ball "was not important". Does everyone see the difference? I will say one more time that the general disdainment for HS ball troubles me only because I have the feeling that this attitude may be pushed onto the player from the parents. Baseball is still a...

FutureBack.Mom ·
Beezer ... I don't know where you are coming from with your comment, but from what I have seen firsthand with our son and others, your comment about married players being an issue for a club is all wrong. All of the scouts who talked with our son wanted to know if he was married, engaged (which he was at the time he was drafted), or had a serious girlfriend. Not one single scout saw his engagement and future marriage as a problem. They actually thought it was good and wished him a wonderful...

My son told me that the best of the best hecklers were at Texas A&M when he played there as a Frosh. He said that they had studied all the UCLA players Bios and knew them real well. They hammered on him for three days and he thought it was great as they did not swear, but just needled him as much as they could. He said that in the last game, he could hear a guy just getting all over him in the batters box and then he hit a 12 hopper for a single. When he reached first, the guy yelled...
