Big Bear, I remember you blowing that knee. I was just a young pup then but my dad used to take me to alot of mesquite sporting events. He was a big Stallion fan. BB, did you play anywhere after high school?

He can swing a bat. His swing isn't great, but he has potential. If he gets taught the high level swing, the sky is the limit.

Excellent; he looks like he has a very promising future ahead of him. One caveat: just be careful about "loading up" on your changeup delivery.

Re: Playing for HS and Showcase at same time?

Aleebaba ·
I doubt if there are any rules to prevent this, but HS coach would likely not like this at all. There are unwritten rules that Select team ball starts after HS, as there is always a concern for injury and overuse, (especially with pitchers). If your son gets hurt playing on the weekend the HS coach will get very angry and make it harder for him and others to play on team in the Summer. That is why there is an unwritten truce.

In many states, it is not allowed. I know in Illinois that applies at any level. Have seen freshmen teams have to forfeit games because of it..

Your best bet is to contact UIL directly. Darryl Beasley, asst. ath. dir., 512-471-5883, dbeasley@uiltexas.org . You may want to consider the coaches position, if the JV player would be considered for a move to Varsity come playoff time. I'm in Dallas, & unless it is a reversal or a very recent change, I don't believe UIL would allow it. I know Varsity players could not. Son did attend a couple tournaments/showcases in the fall, missing a day of school each time due to travel, no...

UIL does not govern activities outside of school; May students participate in non-school activities? Answer: Students may participate in non-school activities at anytime. This means that a student may play, practice or praticipate in a try-out for non-school teams The statement above was copied directly from the baseball manual in the Q&A section. The manual can be viewed on http://www.uiltexas.org/baseball .

Yep, familiar with the above. OP didn't specify whether these were weekend tourneys, or otherwise conflicted with HS season schedule. That is the unknown factor. Times have changed.

Had this come up for the first time last year and there were no real problems. Kid was a catcher. He did not miss his HS games. Only time it affected him was he had a weekend tourn and did not get in until 2-3 a.m. Monday morning and we had a district game Monday afternoon. He was dragging after 4 tourn games and getting in lat and then playing that Monday

Re: Playing for HS and Showcase at same time?

I would think that any HS kid that skipped a school practice or game, would very quickly find himself playing for the showcase team only, so there would be no further conflicts. Time spent at HS practice or games would not be "outside of school". School activities come first. I haven't seen much of this problem beyond freshman ball. Once you get to the older, the tounaments don't typically start till June, do they? My son's team will start practices in early May, but always on Saturday or...

Thank you for all of the great answers.... Just to clarify.... There is no conflict between the high school team and the tournament team. High school games and practices are during the week. Tournament games are on the weekend. We had always heard that it was the coaches that didn't want their players playing and getting hurt outside of school, and then we heard that it was a UIL rule, but the UIL rules for texas do not actually state whether they can or cannot play during a district season.

JeffLovin, My opinion only, but kids need an adequate amount of down time/ recovery time & study time. There is truth to the saying "there's only so many bullets in the holster"...During HS season, 2 games a week + 1-1/2 to 2 hrs a day practice, during a week seems like plenty of playing time for kids under 18 & not in College. After HS season is done, there's 3-4 days a week until mid Nov. That's still a lot of innings, AB's or whatever. When he gets to college baseball will consume...

At 13u my son was a drop 5 in 7th grade, I just got him a bbcor for next year (8th grade) which, as you know, is a drop 3. I am not in TX but fwiw, all the tournaments we are doing next year are 60/90 bbcor only. If your son is going into 7th, there is a good chance they allow for any drop but the bat might have to be usa certified.

May not be in this case but often it is the team's fault and not the organizer. I speak from personal experience. After being told that my sons team was going to Atlanta to play in the big tourney, I came to find out that they didn't sign up in time, etc, etc. turned out fine for us as we were able to get hooked with another team but not so fine for others.

We had been signed up and paid for almost 2 months and were listed in the teams attending section. They kept the Banditos teams in (who have lately apparently had some issues paying PG while their owner pays for prostitutes at tournaments) while giving us the boot. Not a good deal.

I read the article about Ray. Not good. I cant speak for PG but they do care about their brand and youth baseball in general. I will bet that if you go through the channels in a correct manner, you may get some positive results. I see that you don't have a lot of posts but a prominent member of PG does post on here often. PGStaff. You may get better results by sending him a Private Message on here as opposed to calling PG out.

FREE=GOOD, I did receive an email from someone in your organization. I have been trying to gather more information. We don't want teams out there thinking we screwed them. I really think your approach is wrong. If you have been "screwed" we will not stand for that. However bringing up the Banditos and their owner is not the reason for your team not being in the tournament. The Banditos play in nearly every event we hold nation wide. Obviously they would get in this one. And regarding the...

And that is what I thought would happen....your post responses became mostly about the other organization and how you called them/him out as opposed to about the 16u team problem you were having. I would HIGHLY recommend you delete your post and re-phrase your post as a question to PGStaff if he could please look into this...maybe over a private message.....have you met PGStaff, a.k.a. OK, I guess this is the only way to communicate with FREE=GOOD on this matter, so here is what I have found out. The entry fee was not paid on time. So as of Sunday, the tournament director made out the schedule based on all the teams that had paid the entry fee. Schedules are usually produced a week before the event if not sooner. We do understand that sometimes this is simply a mistake or miscommunication on the part of the team. Anyway, based on the information we do have, we have talked...

Hi all Thanks for the responses. As you may have surmised I was upset and lashed out, typing a snarky response that was probably better directed somewhere else and did not include other teams. For that I apologize. I'm not big into deleting messages as if they never happened - I'll leave it and face the music. Again I humbly apologize for my message. As for the delayed payment, that's obviously not what I was told - I will investigate though.

Yet another example of the class act PGSTAFF is. Based on my knowledge of him both on the forum and in real life, his goal is always to do the right thing, and look out for the kids best interests. He is old school, and his compass is set to try and help anyone who is deserving. This includes when he his organization is not at fault, but he still wants to assist in making things as good as possible, within his capabilities. So here is another well deserved pat on the back for all you do.

What was the greatest thing a coach ever did for your son, your daughter, or for you?

smokeminside ·
I'll start! Sorry, it's kinda long. The sport was NOT baseball. It was cross country. I was the guy--there is one on EVERY cross country team--with the panda bear shape and the pace of a mollusk and the throngs of fans urging their glacial progess to the finish line with raucous cheers of either empathic encouragement (“YOU CAN DO IT!!!) or mocking derision (“HURRY UP! WE WANNA GO HOME!”). I never could tell the difference. In fact, I never even heard them when I raced because, like most...
