Rock Dad ·
Another book many on this site will enjoy is "Senior Year: A Father, A Son, and High School Baseball" by Dan Shaughnessy. Dan is a sports columnist for the Boston Globe. Here's a link to the book: http://www.amazon.com/Senior-Year-Father-School-Basebal...id=1183403730&sr=1-1 I've only just started the book but looks to be a good one.

Do It Right Basebal l May 14, 2015 · The coach called one of his 9-year-old baseball players aside and asked, "Do you understand what co-operation is? What a team is?" "Yes, coach", replied the boy . "Do you understand that what matters is we win or lose as a team?" The boy nodded in yes. The coach continued, "I'm sure you know, when an out is called, you shouldn't argue, curse, attack the umpire, or call him a pecker-head, jerk-face or a-hole. Do you understand all that?" Again, the boy...

Thanks Coach May. I forwarded on our remarks to the HS basebal coach when I read this the other day. When I stopped by last night at the hitting barn (thats what they call the hitting cages at the HS), Your words were in poster size, framed, on the wall. I saw 3 young freshman reading them as I was there. Once again your incredible words and thoughts will help young men succeed.

At my sons HS we have been struggling with this for years. Most the football players that are not linemen play lax now. They used to all play basebal. They have a winning tradition and have won more state championships than any team in Ohio. A lot of players get recruited to east coast schools to play. It does not help that middle school Lax is no cut. While baseball still is. Many parents see the scholarships and put their kids in lax instead of baseball. Once cuts happen in HS some try and...

Wow, lots of good info there. Sounds like a fellow parent trying to do the right things. My guy is at La Salle, also a Junior, PM me if you want to talk local stuff. Depending on what school your son is at, i.e. if its Bishop Hendricken, might determine whether or not his lack of Varsity play is a true determinant of value. My guy swung between JV and Varsity last year and that is based on having some talent in the face of a coach who is very loyal (and I agree with him!) to his upper...

No, he's not at Hendricken, but his varsity coach is also quite loyal to upperclassmen, to the point that even in blowout games last year, the "swing" players didn't get to swing. The only swing players who got any varsity time were those who were needed to fill-in for injured players. We registered him w/ NCAA a couple months ago. I've also created a spreadsheet and we did some collegeboard searches, as well as compiled lists of D1/2/3 schools. Then, like you, I've visited their websites to...

Midlo i have not had poor encounters my 15yr old enjoyed playing in the 18u top 16 finish and playing in the 16u as well. I have attended these in various forms for years. trust me i dont want to name names but there are a lot of weak teams. Anyone from GA knows east cobb has about 2 very good teams and the rest are between good and very bad. Look at records from even local events much less national. It is not hard to get in the tourney. Also many places enter several teams say a a/b/c team.

Re: Baseball Program Philosophy

Ironhorse- why the hostility? So what you are saying if a parent (you assume I am a parent of a high school kid, I am not) has a question about the program and a philosophy, then they are bad and the team does not need them? That is odd to say the least. This board has very good baseball minds and lots of coaches. I am not a great baseball coach/mind. I am looking feedback. Lots of folks responded about the 6 minute mile and now I get it and support it. I asked another question about how...

Re: Baseball Program Philosophy

The hostility is because you have some sort of agenda here. You tried to bash a coach on one issue and got no real support. So you crawfished and tried to hammer another (much more fictional) issue. If a coach told you, in person, that he would not be instructing any kids this year, go straight to your AD. Period. I have a feeling this didn't actually happen. So you came to a message board. This all just sounds way too unbelievable. More than likely the issue is with you or the player, not...

I have to agree with both txbball14 and Haltom Scout. I am lucky, the head football coach I work with is great. We have partnered up very well I think. His dad coached baseball in college and even though he did not play, he is still a fan and understands. He comes to all home games and all the in town road games. We share quite a few players at Summit and the kids know that when it is football season the focus is football. When it is basebal season the focus is baseball. It is no coincidence...

Sorry for you guys who all took this to the extreme. Who in the world would admit such thing like "PAY for PLAY"? I am only talk about close situations here. In a large class HS, except 2 or 3 outstanding players, I am sure from 4-12 are all fairly good, but you only got 9 spots on the field, so who would you start from #4 to #12 player? Most coaches would prefer the kids whose parents have been "involved" more with the team when the players are in the same talent level. This is the case not...

I do beleive there in those injuries has resulted in current recommendations. I do beleive there have been 9 and 10 years olds requiring surgery down in Alabama. I will agree with you on that last paragraph. You mentioned that injury happens to players who both pitch and catch at the same time (same game). Overuse from "throwing hard" in too close of a timeframe without recovery from fatigue and normal muscle stress is what leads to chronic pain. Two years ago I took my kid off of a travel team because son was being used to much at the pitching position. The wierd part of it at the time was that I took him off mainly because other parts of his body...

So he went to the camp and pitched great. 90mph fastball great slider and changeup. Pollard was more involved with running the...

The athletic program has not been interested in winning baseball games for some time now. Basebal has been put into a backseat to too many other sports to be competitive. Of which by the way none have had any meaningful success. They do not effectively recruit in Virginia and no Division I Head Coach in the country has survived a W-L record like Kent. ???

Re: Weighted Balls

Catch43 ·
Weighted balls aren't meant for full strength throwing. They are amazing, but almost bad. You just throw very softly with a person, not so far away, and then you pick up a basebal, its like a wiffle ball. I almost feel like I can't throw it because it's too light.

The Predraft has always been held during the week usually on a Tuesday or Wednesday. The main reason is because it is college tournament time and by Tuesday there is not much basebal;l being played. This allows the Scouting Directors, crosscheckers and other scouts the best time to attend. It is a "heavily" scouted event, that has had a lot of early draft picks attend. It is for top players from high school and college. One year we had brothers attend... Brian McCann was in HS, older brother...

If I am there I will be sure to do so. I understand that UNH has all but given up the possibility of re-instituting an intercollegiate basebal team. That being said, my main problem is that the University shows so little support and willingness to work with the baseball club. While we are certainly a competitive team on the field, due to the nature of our equipment, facilities, and means of transportation, we arrive at games looking like, as our coach would say, "a box of crayons."

Re: NCAA Ruling with Balks

Michael S. Taylor ·
OBR is Official Basebal Rules. This would be the same ruling in OBR. WHat happens is it is a delayed dead ball and if all runners advance one base and the BR makes first sfaely then the balk is nullified. If any of these conditions aren't met then you kill the ball, return the batter and enforce the balk. You can have outs on this play as long as it after the one base requirement. In HS it is imediate dead ball, enforce the balk. The OBR ruling would be true in any OBR based system such as...

I once had a team steal 230 bases. It is being scrutinezed now by the IHSA for induction into the state records. Our 6'5" 240 lbs firstbaseman stole 18. We had 4 with 40 or more. That team wasn't supposed to be very good according to some "experts." They won 25 games. Had we not run, we would not have won 10. It isn't just the stolen base. It is the pressure in every other facet of the game. I could elaborate more but basebal people such as the posters on this site understand all of the...

I read the article years ago and when it was posted today. Here is the thing, I am not going to get into where a player gets discovered. Playing in tournaments is a lot different than off season showcases. I think many of us here have tried to get that point across. Funny how we all see things differently, but as I always said, the folks of the younger set will realize how important this type of info will be someday when their player needs some major surgery..BEFORE HE RECEIVES A COMMITMENT.
