Thanks again for all the suggestions. I am convinced on the need for going to a PG showcase. PGSTAFF: appreciate all the nuances to stocking up player projections that come into play. Although challenging, over the course of many years, these intangibles that we refer to (body type, arm action, command, secondary pitch readiness, poise, ability to get batters out, etc) have coalesced with metrics (pitch velocity, spin rate, etc). Together they are better aids to project what a 16 year old...

Phanatic, I suggest you contact me regarding your son. Don't worry I don't try to sell anything. I just think certain kids get the most out of certain situations or events and I would like to know more about your son. He does sound interesting based on your initial post. You can send me a private message as I doubt you want to discuss your son out here in the open.

A few thoughts that don't necessarily directly answer your questions... Does he know what he wants to major in or what he wants to do for a living (besides maybe play baseball)? Many come here without a wide enough net. As an academic 2019 considering D1 states thru D3's in a large geographic area, I would propose that his net is quite wide and he will have to put sufficient time into research and searching within as to what options will be realistic for him (narrow that net a bit). It won't...

At this point a good portion of D1 commitments are filled. There is space available. But be careful not to be the non scholarship insurance policy for a position. Keep in mind a lot of faster with power shortstops will be moved to third in college. At this point I wouldn’t throw spaghetti off the wall to see what sticks. I would have a very targeted strategy. Where do I want to play? Does my high school or travel coach know that college’s coach so he can promote me before I’m seen. You...

Go to the events where the schools on your son’s vetted list will be. And those events should be ones where he will be seen by those schools. Vetted academically and athletically. At a minimum, trusted third parties (e.g., scouts, guidance counselors, et. al.) have said your son could be admitted and could play baseball there. Does he have a vetted list that he’s working now? If not, he should ASAP. For the vast majority of players, college baseball recruiting is not a crap shoot where a...

My wife complained that I made the initial post way too long! Sorry for that. For sake of brevity, hoping to find out two questions: 1) Do D1 coaches heavily scout PG national 18U Memorial Day tournaments? 2) Is PG 17U WWBA tournament in GA enough for a kid that is interested in playing DI? What's the next most important 17U national summer tournament as measured by D1 coaches in attendance? Bob- thanks for the question. Yes, he already has an Area Code invite lined up from a Yankees scout.

Out of state cost may not matter to you. But the percentage that becomes an athletic scholarship has to fit into the coach’s budget. This goes back to the stud value. But some state universities need to recruit out of state due to the limited talent base in their state.

Regarding the Memorial Day tournament you mentioned, I don't know anyone that's gone to that (from CA). At least in CA, HS teams are just finishing up and players are taking a breather and getting ready for JOs. Also, colleges are still playing so not sure how they'd be on the recruiting trail. I don't think it would hurt to miss this, IMO. Regarding the 17U WWBA, this is a great tournament no doubt. But, that's a lot of eggs to put in one basket. I should add - regarding the 17U WWBA, you'll only play a couple games at Lake Point where the majority of coaches hang out. Most of the games will be on fields up to an hour away and very few college coaches make the trip in my experience.

Concur with Smitty here. Depending on which travel team he's able to get on, they may have preferred access to Lake Point (turf fields where the majority of coaches are). I believe the preferred access comes from teams having played in the WWBA tournament for a number of years.

Agree with Smitty. Too many teams and not enough games played at LakePoint for each team to ensure he'll get seen in that one tournament. Definitely a tournament you should ideally play in, but it's one of several you'd want to attend. My 16u is lucky because we live in Atlanta, and his team will play in every 16u & 17u event at Lakepoint this coming summer. And we're still not counting on that to carry the day. Still need to target specific schools, make contact, then attend their camp...

I would not leave your son getting seen at a tourney up to chance. You need to put together a comprehensive recruiting plan for your son. You are a little ways into your sons, but the basic principles still apply. Here is a high level approach. If you have any specific questions, post your question as a separate topic, you...

Also realize that not all games are at Lakepoint, so make sure he also has his regular cleats. I know PG records every pitch, and each pitchers fastest velocity. They do not grade them ,but I believe all of this goes into their master database for rankings My son will also be playing in the WWBA. We are fortunate that Lakepoint is 30 miles from the house.

If your son is a pitcher and will pitch at Lakepoint, I highly recommend he gets a pair of molded cleats. My son pitched there the first year it opened and his turf shoes did not keep him from sliding around. He had molded cleats last year and didn't slip or slide at all. I also recommend buying the molded cleats before arriving as most sporting goods stores around Lakepoint were pretty much sold out of molded cleats.

If he pitches at any PG tournament they'll have someone with guns behind home plate recording his velo for his different types of pitches. A few weeks later he'll have those numbers added to his profile (at least it was a few weeks later when my 2016 pitched in GA). If/when he attends a showcase they'll show the velo data right away and then a few weeks later he'll have a write up posted and a PG ranking (like 7.5, 8, 8.5, etc). I'm assuming there is more behind the scenes that a college...

Shaq gets his size 22s there. my son loves having a place where he can try shoes on. I am not sure if they have molded cleats in stock. But if you have a free day, it will be worth the drive. (It is not an impressive store front and you have to walk up to the third floor for the athletic shoes. But they have a great selection.

Son is there now at 14U WWBA. I couldn't go. All games are on Gamechanger. Games at Lakepoint are on Trackman. Every pitch gets velocity, spin rate, axis, horizontal and vertical movement plus more. Every batted ball gets exit velocity, spin, distance and about another 8 data points. Pretty cool. Oh yeah, it also keeps score. https://connect.baseball.track...oard?Date=2016-06-28

Surprised your team above has THREE games at PG Lakepoint; our team has only one this year, many seem to have 2, but 3 is awesome. It is tough for the pitchers who pitch elsewhere as they don't get all the data (last year my son pitched off site and they only had the radar on him for one inning, and he is stuck with that number in his PG profile despite going unofficially 3 mph higher on a dad's radar a few innings later). In our case last year we had college coaches at every game. Lakepoint would have consistently more but we had several no matter where we were. Son's team won pool. Our playoff game was the first one played at Lakepoint and only game going on in the entire complex. Kid pitching was going to UGA. Had to be 100+coaches and scouts watching our one game. Our lead off guy took kid deep over LCF on second pitch. It was a wild scene. Good luck to all this week.

East Cobb will have plenty of colleges watching. We played at a non-lake Point field at 9:00 this morning. There were plenty of colleges watching. Now, a lot of these recruiters know who they want to see, so depending on who is on the two teams, you could get more or less exposure.

College commitment after playing WWBA

Jayden, have your son email all the coaches he is in contact with and tell them he will be there at the WWBA event. Then follow up again when you have the game times and fields. You have nothing to loose and everything to gain at this point. Add in some fresh D3s if you wish, with the baseball "resume". Good luck!

Probably the only roster spots available at this point for a ‘21 are at D3s. This isn’t what WWBA events are typically for. A player would be better off at an academic event or event local to the area he’s looking to be recruited.
