Velocity Creep?

I have been wondering that as well. How is it that we go for years with only a few instances of players hitting 100 and suddenly 100 is almost common?

One possible explaination. The velocity of a ball obviously decreases quickly as it leaves the hand due to drag. The closer the ball is measured to the hand the higher the velocity. I may be mistaken but as the years have gone by the technology has gotten better and better to measure the ball closer to release point. This may account in part, for some of the increase.

Of course then there is always the conspiracy theory....

OK...I admit it...I overstated it a bit!

But my God, it seems like you go years with vague rumors of players hitting triple digits...and then BAM on the same roster you got two guys who are right there regularly and getting 103 which last year I would have said...was almost impossible!

Pretty darned remarkable...kinda makes you go...hhhhmmmm?

Verlander threw 17 pitches of 100 or better. That is just sick. I agree TPM, that is absolutely NOT COMMON. Have to think it is the Detroit Pitching staff with Verlander and Zumaya, and now they have drafted Miller. Jeez, they are impressive. I think they will dominate and have a very good club for years to go, provided everyone stays healthy. Dont need to wind up like Prior or Wood. There won't be many clubs that can match that rotation, and they have an owner who will spend the bucks to keep them. Just my opinion. Take care all.
