Update: Kevin practiced well w/ the varsity team today. Though they spent about an hour on bunt defenses, then another 45+ mins. on other D, he said they each got 10 hits batting too. And 9 of his were hard line drives to the outfield, several over the outfielders (who admittedly were playing IN a bit

). Only 1 popup.
Kevin really feels like he fit in well w/ these older kids, many of whom he played LL with over the years. But as much fun as it was practicing w/ them, they have a scrimmage tomorrow and the coach told Kevin to go to the JV/Freshman practice instead. And we're completely fine w/ that. Coach said he'll continue to invite him to some of the weekend practices though. And I've had several other parents warn me already that "if he's not going to play a lot on varsity, do all you can to keep him on freshman, because the JV games get bumped a lot and he'll play a lot more and develop better on freshman". This was from a couple guys whom I greatly respect their baseball knowledge too (former college players, longtime coaches, sons are great players, both of whom played freshman as 9th graders).
Varsity coach told him again that his swing is better than 3/4 of his varsity players. Of course, I'm sure a fair amount of that is to build his confidence, but at least he likes him and we know he's on his radar.
Thanks for letting me share the beginning of this exciting baseball journey. I know it may come across like bragging, but I'm really coming at this more from the perspective of "I've been posting on various websites for 8 years or so, and a lot of nice people have shown an interest over the years, so I'm just sharing the beginning of his story".
