I have seen so many things this year that could be generalized as "cheating". For me, it is the umpires job to determine what is and what is not. He is getting paid for it.
What about a team who needs to get runners on base by intentionally getting hit, is that cheating? What about a team that picks up on the pitchers move and forces a balk, which becomes questionable (eg. Harold Reynold's explanation of what is and isn't a balk). Is that cheating? What about a team who is watching the TV monitors (believe it) placed near their dugout and is watching for the signs? Is that cheating?
Baseball is one play at a time, if for some reason a team pulls a fast one and gets away with it, I blame it on the officiating, it's a lesson learned and you need to move on, just as I do believe this thread needs to do before it gets ugly. Big Grin

nice try at the spin & c'mon, dont' use words I gotta look up

"enter the no spin zone"
he said to keep my hand on my wallet while someone's telling me how honest they are Wink

TPM, ya been "monitored"?? - - oops, I forgot to tell you about that, no wonder they play so well at home - - watch for the unmanned cf tv zoom also - and you can have some fun with 'em if they don't realize you're on to the setup

Bee,
At Baylor, umpire had to stop play to go over to warn players (not the Tigers) to get away from the monitors and ask the ESPN crew to do a better job at doing their jobs. Smile
I ask, do you all consider this cheating? Should those player have been taken out of the game?

Point is, there is so much stuff that goes on. I ma not saying what is right and what is wrong, but come folks, WAKE UP!

Bee....I agree about big words.....the only time I really had to use words like that were actually when I was in college.

As far as cheating in general in baseball goes.....if it isn't against the rules then it isn't cheating.....and if it is against the rules and you get caught, learn a better way to do it next time so you don't get caught.

Steroids are an entirely different matter, though.
Oops,
forgot something. What about the player who repeatedly steps out of the box to throw the pitcher off, or the pitcher who takes his time in throwing batters off. What about the coach who questions calls repeatedly to throw off the paceof the game.
Is this cheating?

Bee,
venue closer to home..hmm, give me a HINT!

Moc,
Nice new avatar!

This discussion takes me back to Little League! You couldn't lead off - but the rules actually only prohibited it when the pitcher was actually on the rubber. I remember my son used to watch the pitcher before he stepped on the slab to see if he wasn't paying attention, and then he'd just take off for the next base. By the time the pitcher realized what was happening he was flustered and, if he made a throw at all, generally it was late or off-target.

I'll never forget the fifth time my son stole home when the pitcher wasn't paying attention: the umpire sent him back. When I asked him why, he just smiled, shook his head, and said "I just can't let him do it any more."

Cheating? Well, the parents of the other players apparently thought so...
