My son has had great success throwing the 2 seamer. Especially when he can throw it to bust a right handed batter inside.

What I am curious to know is how many MPH less "on average" is it than its brother - the 4 seamer.

My pitching coach, a certified instructor with the NPA, has told me that the pitch shouldn't be slower. I said well I definitely can see a speed difference with major league pitchers. He said its only slower when the pitcher intentionally slows it done or changes grip or wrist angle to make it move. If the only difference is fingers across the seams or between them, the speed should be the same. My personal velocity readings support that as well.
