Jarthur that would be good to see the high school association put together something with such demand, having PBR sponsor it opens up debate for the people that dont exactly like what they see.
Seems like quite a lot of power bestowed upon the organizers. Who does the selecting? What is the process? There doesn't appear to be a formula best record etc.

Here it is again. That virus that is sweeping across our country. It's that "Fairness" Virus.

Give me a break spinner......of course the organizers have quite a lot of power bestowed upon them. They organized it! They select whoever the **** they want to select. And there isn't a thing wrong with it.
If people want to criticize the process they should just try and do something on their own. Every team in that classic is worthy of being there. I'd lay off the tournament directors also, they get nothing financially out of doing this. They want to showcase the best talent/teams in the area yearly. If you criticize them they will probably not want to do this tournament every year. If that happened it would be bad for baseball in this area.

In an other event, I started a small school classic that will take place very year beginning in 2008.

The field is set:

April 19th 2008 at Benedictine

9am-Lisle vs. Hampshire

11:30-Coal City vs. Danville Schlarman

2pm- Tuscola vs. Marissa

5pm-St. Joe-Ogden vs. Herscher

7:30- IVC vs. Driscoll

As for advertising, I've asked Sean Duncan if he would advertise for us and he said he would help us out.
Isnt that what this site is for? Debate, discussion, raise questions and yes rant?
It looks like a nice little tournament, it shouldn't be regarded with so much frenzy. Thats all, its a good tournament.
Strikes me as interesting how people can maneuver themselves into positions of authority. PBR for example, who and what granted them the authority to rank anything? Does anyone stop and ask these types of questions? What is the ranking officials background? Same with the people running this flyers event. Dont make more of what this really is.

No one needs authority to rank anything. In the media business, things are ranked all the time. Top stock picks, best dressed actor, David Lettermans Top 10 List, etc. It's usually one guy sitting in an office musing over the choices.

Whether it's accurate or reflective of truth, well, that's the part that we all love to debate, so let 'er rip on that subject. But whether ones ranking list is of value or not, well the readers of that magazine vote on that each time they choose to renew their subscription or not. True democracy and capitolisim at its best.
Spinner,

Who and what are you about? Another brand new poster who arrives with the usual negative drivel. This is all too familiar. PBR didn't need anyone's approval, authority or a government permit to publish a magazine. This is the USA. Why don't you start your own magazine and have your own rankings. You've got every right to do so, and, while you're at it start an organization like the Pitch and Hit Club and you can run events, give scholarships and just be an all-around good guy.

Coach IU26. Great job in putting your 2008 event together already. Terrific for the smaller schools.

Am I wrong, but is this deja vu all over again? Also, what does this have to do with the title of this thread, 2007 Schaumburg Flyers HS Baseball Classis?

Who established that PBR was making money on this event, maybe they are doing it for publicity, I haven't seen that established.

My son was talked about as much as anyone's in that piece and he's never been to one of their showcases. Therefore the conclusion that they use this just to highlight "their" kids cannot be made.
Cplz. Nobody making any money? All of this out of kindness and good will? Hate to break the news to you but someone is looking at the bottom line. I didnt know that PBR was free or their showcases were? I would like to know how “much each sponsor is donating to the event and what they can expect in return. what is the gate fee. Someone is making money.
Jarthur you seem like a good guy, just answer some of the questions that have been posed to you. What is the pitch hit clubs stake in this?
spinner,

Yes, I've got ties to everyone, even Jack Bauer. I've even got lots of ties hanging in my closet. I'm not thwarting your right to say anything, I'm just posting like any another member of this board and not as a moderator. As you stated, this board is to promote the exchange of ideas and to allow anonomous posters to make inuendos and crass insinuations against some very fine folks. Have at it if it makes you feel better. They're all big boys.
Oh dear lord, there's one in every crowd. Why, lord, do you test the patience of men like myself, jarthur, PBR, CoachB25, itsrosy and all the other fine, knowledgeable posters when we are simply trying to promote the game of baseball and the great athletes in the state of Illinois?

Spinner, let me address both your complaints.

1) Who picks the teams for the Flyers Classic?
Jarthur and his board of advisers.
A) Why do they pick these teams?
Because they said so. These are the teams they feel are best suited to play in such an event and because it's their event, it's their choice. Clear enough?

It's hyped because Jarthur and his staff do an excellent job, from securing one of the nicest baseball diamonds in the Midwest to treating the teams like they've reached the state finals when they play there. Not to mention the high caliber of teams and players that have played there since its inception.

As someone else said, if you don't like the way it's done do it yourself. As CoachIU pointed out, he's putting his own on. He's coming down to Peoria to play in the one I'm putting on in 2008.

I dare you to try putting an event like this on. It's not just getting teams in place. It's securing a gem of a ballfield (Jarthur has Alexian Field, CoachIU has Benedictine and I've got O'Brien Field). It's writing up contracts for return visits, it's securing a title sponsor (another feather in Jarthur's cap as securing Easton is huge. God willing, I'll get a title sponor like that. Helllllllloooooooooo Caterpillar!). It's rounding up volunteers to serve as hosts for the visiting teams and seeing to it where they get to where they need to be. It's securing housing for the teams at a reasonable rate. It's getting umpires. It's securing enough baseballs to get through the event.

Like I said, try it. Just try it and then you can come talk to us.

2) Why does PBR pimp "their" kids?
I've been working for Sean Duncan since the second issue of his magazine came out. That's when I caught him doing the only shady thing I've ever seen him do. He was using the mug shots of my Journal Star all-area players without our permission. Lord forbid. I called him up, offered to help him out and away we went.

Some people disagree with the way Sean does things. That's fine, they're entitle to their opinion. But I can say this without reservation or evasion. Never once have I recommended a player worth ranking to Sean and had him reply "Sorry, he plays for Midwest Blazers/Illinois Orioles/Southern Illinois Bullets, etc. Can't rank him very high/at all."

Is Sean making money off it? I would hope so, because he has to pay me and make money for himself. It's his business, his job. I don't begrudge you for making money at your job. Nor should you begrudge Sean for making money at his. How about a simple thank you for promoting the game of baseball in the state of Illinois and getting hundreds -- literally 100s -- of kids names into the hands of hundreds of baseball coaches so that these kids can further their careers and maybe, just maybe, get their schooling paid for.

And finally, one point not related to Spinner's argument, but I feel it fits within the point of my argument. This fall, I helped start an organization that hopefully ends up like Top Tier, SI Bullets, Midwest Blazers, Illinois Orioles, etc.

We're starting at the 15-U level. Back in late September, we had tryouts where 35 members of the classes of 2009, 2010 and 2011 tried out. We took 13. Ever since then, we've nothing but "This kid should really be on your team."

Well maybe he should be. I'm sure there's more talented kids. But if they couldn't take the time to attend the tryout or take the time to arrange a special tryout, then you're out of luck. But instead of facing that fact, people continue to act like most of society today and just whine about, hopeful that the person in charge will wear down and cave in. Or just badmouth the team, saying it's no good.

I hate where our society is headed.

This one really stinks!!!!

Spinner1 says-
Isnt that what this site is for? Debate, discussion, raise questions and yes rant?

This is a high school baseball web site where people generate messages about interesting and useful things that relate to hs baseball such as early season tournaments that contain immense amounts of hs baseball talent. There is no room on this message board for questioning the morals and integrity of people who are trying to put on QUALITY OPPURTUNITIES FOR HS PLAYERS. Your opinions and views seem very strong for someone who is new to this board. Why do you harbor so much anger about this topic?

One question:
Who made you the lead attorney in the case of “who is making the millions in the hs baseball showcase and magazine business?”

Keep working hard,

I am just asking questions why are some of you so darn defensive? Jarthur seems like a great guy, just want to know whats beneath the surface. Diggle you are writer correct, ever hear of investigative journalism? I ask some interesting questions and the snow patrol jumps in and attacks me. For someone to say money isnt a factor is just plain foolish. What you may think is good for hs baseball may not fall into everyones idea of "good". How about the teams that dont make the list to get in, the teams in the not so popular bunch with the self appointed "selection panel"
How about the self appointed ranking official at PBR. Take the blinders off, how many of his buddies from top tier "help at those showcases of theirs"? Heres a question how many scouts were at the last showcase that were not affiliated with tt? Zero. You guys can snow eachother and hype your projects; just be aware that not everyone buys into it. Some of you guys are way to insufferably impressed with yourselves. Just reading some of these posts makes you wonder.

Since we are in "just asking questions" mode, I have one for you spinner.

It says you just registered on this board about 48 hours ago. Have you ever posted on this board before under a different name?

It would seem from this last comment that your experiences here have much more depth than just the last 48 hours. Please do share with us the other names you have been on this board. crazy
Cplz I would prefer to have my privacy protected by the first amendment to be further protected by the annonimity provided by the web site administators.
Cplz heres an idea, why dont you start a trend and post under your true name, maybe others will follow. Maybe then we would see much less lashing out from hyper sensitive suburbanites! Guys, you dont need to go bersek every time someone raises a question. Just sit back take a deap breath, count to ten, maybe try that inverted hanging upside down thing that rosey odonnell does to relieve stress. (Cplz you watch the view while pecking away at the computer.....right) Just do something other than lashing out like a grade schooler that didnt get picked on the playground.

I will never, ever have to investigate Jarthur or his organization. Do you know why?
1) They are not in my circulation area.
2) I've had the pleasure of working with Jarthur on a couple of things and I can tell you that everything is done absolutely right.

I love it how people only want investigative journalism done when it fits their cause. You're the type of guy who, if I were investigating something you didn't like, would fall over yourself trying to help me. But if I were trying to investigate you, you'd hang up on me when I called for comment, and then call my boss and make up some story about me lying. My boss would then laugh, tell you when the article was running and thanks for reading.

You claim to just want some questions answered, but yet you continue to try and put a good, hard-working man and the event he works his butt off to put on in a bad light. Classy.

Now we're getting somewhere. For those not accustomed to getting letters like this, let me translate this from "parent" speak to English.

My son's team wasn't selected for one of the best showcases in the Midwest. That's not fair! Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah

Don't you all realize you're costing my son, who's obviously among the greatest players in the state, nay in the world, a chance to play in front of scouts and costing him a college scholarship.
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

It's just a good-old boys network. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

Since they weren't nice enough to let us in, I'm just going to badmouth the event and the people running it. Jerks! Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

Pot -->Kettle -->Black.
Please stop badmouthing all the hard-working people on here. They are good, honorable people who want nothing more than to see baseball get its due.
Take your sons/daughters out for a game of catch, take them to the batting cage. Hell go ask the coach why you're son is platooning in right when he's clearly the best player in the state/nation/world.
Just don't bother us with your idiocy.

Spouter,
I think you are trying to quote the fifth amendment, the protection against self incrimination.

The only one here that is pretending to be something or someone they aren't that I can see...IS YOU!
