Corpus Christi Calallen steamrolled over three very strong San Antonio programs (2 5A programs and 1 4A -- all with multiple college signees) this weekend in an area tournament. I was very impressed with the power in their lineup all the way to #9. Baylor-bound 3B/RHP Logan Verrett hit two HR's and at least one double in the game I saw.

Calallen won the state 4A championship in 2005 and lost a heartbreaker during the playoffs last year to Corpus Christi Moody, the eventual 2007 state champion. They will be a force to reckon with this year.

People in the Dallas area don't realize how hard it is to get to Austin for "State"... they comapre all the teams up there to each other (big fish in a smallish pond)... a team like Moody or CCC would be a top team up there year in and year out - and would be something to reckon with...

Not too many teams up there make constant appearances in Austin - outside of Highland Park which makes its fair share...

Just as in greater Houston Area teams are stronger as well...

Not that teams in Dallas aren't good - just not as good as the parents think they are....
Ben There-

Hey at least you are not a racist... I only pray that after reading your post that you are not an educator, a police officer, a doctor, or someone with importance in a community... sad that there are still people as ignorant as you in our society... have you ever seen CCC or Moody play? Have you seen where they attended college?

Hey, it is okay... everyone is ignorant in some aspects....

Tell me where you think I am wrong - can kids in the school district go wherever they want ? You seem to have all the answers - but let me help you with this one ... the answer is yes they can. I was told by a CCC fan / parent about the age thing - maybe I should not have repeated it. I have been around the block and back - you cant offend me - does the truth offend you ?

Ben There,

I understand the Garland schools have the same option, they can go to the school of their choice. How is it helping them?[/QUO

I agree with you - in Garlands case it is not helping them with baseball - what about Football ? Garland High School. How about Plano ? Do you think Plano could have a powerhouse in baseball if all the kids that were talented went to one school. How bout Football? Duncanville has been aided by the fact they have only one school. There are many examples - but its like the old saying - life is not fair. But it helps to understand "why".
Diablo con Huevos,

"Besides, how many of those kids are illegal and really 20 years old"

No racism in this sentence.

Is it true that there are many illegal immigrants in that part of the country?...Yes it is true. If you didnt know this i can only pray that you are not an educator, a police officer, a doctor or someone with importance in a community.

I am not a racist and agree with this post.
People, please just obey the site rules. Most aren't interested in the name calling. I believe guys and gals can have a great deal of baseball knowledge without having played college or pro ball. We've discussed that before.

One day we speculated on reasons for the huge baseball success in Houston and surrounding areas. I don't know if school district boundry rules have a large impact or not.

Just some food for thought on this subject. It seems in the DFW area the talent in High School gets watered down due to each city adding more high schools.

Example: The city of Mansfield just opened its 4th high school. My son is a junior and when he was a freshman they had 63 kids try out. This year the freshman had 26 try out due to less students in the system.
Corpus Christi Calallen's 33-1 record confirms my original impressions of the team, as expressed in the first post of this thread. Roundthird.blogspot.com lists them at #20 in the nation and provides the following information: "Roland Resendez leads the offensive attack with a .500 BA. Logan Verett, Deek Hagy, Kris Guerrero, Jeramie Marek, Skyler Hoelscher and Patrick Fraiser are all batting well over .400."

That's a whopping 7 players batting over .400. Wow!

Calallen's only loss this year has been to Corpus Christi Moody. They are in different districts and most likely will meet up in the coming weeks. In last year's playoff series between Calallen and Moody, almost 20,000 fans packed the stands over the 3 games to watch the rivals duke it out.

Incidentally, Calallen's head coach Steve Chapman is the uncle of San Antonio Reagan's head coach, Chans Chapman. Reagan is currently 31-2 and Calallen is one of only two teams to beat Reagan this year.

It was my understanding (and I could be wrong) that CC Moody was a "magnet" school, with some specialized educational program. And any kid in the CC ISD could sign up for that program, thus attending CC Moody and participating in the program. I don't think CC ISD has open enrollment, however, where any kid can just go to any high school he desires.

Magnet programs are open to abuse, since a baseball player wanting to be on the Moody team could sign up for the magnet program for "the wrong reasons."

Perhaps ctiger can enlighten us on this one.

Not a lot of hispanic names on that roster. Sounds like a great team with a good chance at the 4A title.
With Corpus Christi Moody knocked out of the playoffs, my prediction is that Calallen will make it all the way to the state tournament.

Last night, in a single-game area playoff, Baylor-signee Logan Verrett led Calallen to a 9-1 victory over Floresville and advanced the Wildcats to the regional quarterfinals. According to Caller.com, RHP Verrett allowed only three hits and struck out 11 in his complete-game victory that improved him to 13-0. He helped his own cause even more by hitting two homers and driving in three runs.
Ben There,

I typically just browse these forums, but your comment regarding "illegals and 20 year olds" caused me pause and I actually registered on this site just to relpy to your comment.

First, Corpus Christi Calallen school district is located in far Northwest Corpus Christi and is actually much closer to the town of Robstown than it is to Corpus (even though it is the Corpus City lmits).

Not that it matters, but the racial makeup of the baseball team pretty well reflects that of the district. The majority is non-hispanic. It has, however, over the years had some outstanding hispanic athletes.

The "illegals and 20 year old" comment is not only out of line, but just plain silly. I think it would be safe to say that the odds of Calallen having an illegal on the team would be about the same as any Texas High School team having an illegal.

Regarding age...the only baseball player that I can ever remember being a year older than the norm at graduation was Jordan Chambless (who signed with A&M). As I understand it, Jordan either started school a year late or was held back in elementary school for whatever reason.

The Calallen program is a credit to (1)Coach Steve Chapman (2)a strong youth program (3)and the confidence that a winning tradition can instill in young people.

Good luck to everyone's favorite team. They are all a credit to what high school athletics is about!
