For those of you starting the recruiting process, understand that playing at any level after high school is a gift. D1 is where the best talent plays, but there is more to it than just that. Your son should pick a school where he is going to get playing time. Does he want to be rooting his D1 team from the bench, or be a 4-year starter at a D2 school? Some will say they would rather be associated with a D1 school, even if they don't get much playing time. That's fine also. It's what will make them happy. For them, it might be worth the risk and if they believe in themselves, they will no doubt think they can crack the starting line-up one day.
Just be realistic in your expectations. Most college baseball players don't play D1. There is nothing wrong with D2, D3, NAIA, and junior colleges. It's all good. Work together with your son to aim for a school with good academics, good facilities, good coaching, in a part of the country he will be happy at. The division is not the most important thing. Most D1, D2, D3, NAIA ball players wont make it to the pros, so pick a school that will pay off in other ways. Good luck!
