I am on another forum site and this discussion comes up about the "supposed" racial comments that AF's football coach made. I believe his name is DeBerry, anyway he said "African-American players are very, very fast" What are your thoughts. It was probably a stupid remark since he made the comment in front of the media, and we all know how the media is, make a comment about African-Americans and it's instantly racial. What if would have said that White American boys throw a football better, is that racial? I think the media is trying to make a story out of nothing.

fischer deberry is a quality person and a quality coach!!! he is right , they are very very fast but not all of them, and they do throw the football better, but not all of them. these newspaper people they are the racist ones but is anything done to them? no power of the pen, and each of those that right this stuff have about as much brain power as their pens. deberry is quality.
Tas...If they want the guy replaced, it will become a "racial" comment. Look at what happened to the baseball coach at Oklahoma even though the kid that was involved and his parents understood his comments "differently" than the media reported and actually didn't want him replaced!

Even if it is true, i.e., the running statement, they're capable of creating something in print that none of us can do. Power of the press.

Those of us that are "older", remember Al Campanis who was fired by the Dodgers years ago for his comment about blacks and swimming and ????

While I understand being politically correct, I still don't understand why all of the public telephones have instructions printed in Spanish/English while NONE has anything printed in Lithuanian.

Headed to Acapulco during the Christmas break and will research the public phones in ACA for everyone. Wonder if they have inx in English?

Go White Sox.
Thanks for the comments.

I totally agre that the media has turned this into a racial thing. They like to twist people's words.

He was commenting on AF's year, and DeBerry was stating that they lacked the ability to sign a lot of minorities. Therefore his following comments were mostly printed instead of the previous one.
sox...Interesting that you should say that. Apparently Joe Dunigan and his parents don't and didn't feel the same about him as you do.

Why would a "redneck" recruit black student/athletes?

What is the basis of your statement?

You obviously want DeBerry fired at Air Force, too.

"No, Larry Cochell, I don't know what you mean"

There's a radio spot that appears on 1300 AM The Zone (a local sports station in Austin), a PSA from from the Underground Railroad Freedom Center, where a black guy is giving a speech at a shareholders meeting or some such. Anyway, while he's giving the speech, we overhear 2 white guys talking:

One white guy says to the other, "You know, for a black guy, he's really articulate, you know what I mean?"

The other white guy says, "Umm, no, I don't know what you mean."

Point being, sometimes you have show you disagree with a stereotype.

And as college baseball found out this weekend, those stereotypes still exist, 40 years after the last Voting Rights Act was passed.

Larry Cochell, the manager of the OU baseball team, made the following remarks about Joe Dunigan III, an African-American player for the Sooners.

“There are honkies and white people and there are n——— and black people. Dunigan is a good black kid ... There’s no n——- in him.”

Yesterday, Cochell resigned as manager of the Sooner baseball team.

Yes, I know Dunigan and his dad have forgiven Larry Cochell. That's a credit to both of them, but it doesn't excuse Cochell.

Yes, I know it's a university environment and universities can be hyper-sensitive. That doesn't excuse the coach either.

Yes, I know the "n-word" is not considered bad in some contexts. That wasn't one of those contexts.

There's more to it than the "n-word", it's the attitude behind it. Cochell's attitude was that Dunigan was a "good black kid" instead of a good kid, as if black people aren't inherently good, or less is expected of them because of their race.

Cochell is the one who resigned, but if you read between the lines of some of Joe Castiglione and David Boren's statements, it's likely he would have been fired anyway. As OU President David Boren noted, "A good and caring man has made a terrible mistake for which he must assume responsibility."

Because sometimes you gotta say, "No I don't know what you mean." Especially at a time when people are concerned about the number of African-Americans partcipating in the game of baseball at all levels.

It's my considered opinion that the "N" word used more than once in front of Gary Thorne and another member of the ESPN broadcasting team is flat out racist.

So...I suppose that if I said to Beenthere ...about TRhit, that "there is no "w" in that man" it would be OK?

There is simply no place in today's world for old time, low down, stereotyping.

As for the Dunigan's putting the best face on it, I'm sure they had there reasons. Put yourself in their place.

Fighting the University where Joe is on scholarship, which took a long time to get rid of Mr. Cochell would not be my idea of a good time.

I have no problem with that--only you and a few other use that term-- perhaps I have learned to be bigger that that

You know Beenthere and I have had differences but I am sure we are on the same page here

Soxnole look in the mirror before you make your next post--you have so much inate bias in you it is sad-

Just an aside on the "N" word-- how come it is fine for blacks to use the word in movies andn stand up comedy ( see Richard Pryor), watch a few Spike Lee movies, but if a white man uses the word he is a racist. I find that sickening--talk about equality

Actually I have no problem with the word because is actually a word that goes across the board--it has nothing to do with ethnic traits other than lazy

Perhaps the real world has not reached "soxnoleville"
Soxnole,

I really doubt that you know much about what the Dunigans' position is regarding this matter. Your assumption that they even thought about "fighting the university where Joe is on scholarship" is really a terribly unfair statement and one that should not be made so recklessly and without basis in fact.

BTW, I have several photos of former Coach Cochell visiting outside the dugout with Joe
before an intrasquad scrimmage this Fall. Does anyone think a media outlet might be interested in purchasing these to use in a "post-incident" followup story? Smile The story title could be "Where Are They Now?" or something like that.
MN-Mom,

Would it be asking too much if you could edit soxnole's post just a tiny bit?

You know - just abbreviate the W thing a bit.

At least take out one letter. LOL

If you like - you can even put up a picture of my uncle Salvatore - eating pasta and making a "deal". Or a picture of Mussolini hanging upside down in WWII.

You know - anything - just to take the edge off soxnole.

Real World John. Rap music is 95% consumed by white kids like yours and mine. Look it up. You confuse entertainment and media with society.

That is the absolute flimsiest argument made here in quite awhile. IMO. A little more effort PLEASE?

Here is simple social experiment for you. Walk up to the next 30+ year old black guy you see at the store, and just ask him. It's very simple.

Before you do please write on a piece of paper who to contact in case of emergency, and put it in your pocket.

When you wake up you can tell us what he said.

On behalf of all my relatives - as well as Al Capone, Sam Giancana, The Godfather, Frank Sinatra and Mussolini - I must say I am absolutely stunned by our willingness to allow the W word on this board.

I am offended and - as a result - I am starting a boycott of Ragu Spaghetti sauce and the image of my grandmother on the label.

I am so offended by the neanderthals on this board. laugh

Beenthere, if you're going to Mexico and plan on using the phones, other than your own cell phone, get a prepaid calling card. It'll save you a couple hundred bucks in phone charges. I got seriously ripped off in Puerto Vallarta in June, $75.00 per call for 5 minutes, or something ridiculous like that. Calling card, .05 per minute.

Also, remember that Rap is *rap. While I'll tolerate most music that my ballplayers want to listen to, NO RAP ALLOWED.

laugh....good one P
IMO the most racially inflammatory entity in our country is the news media. The news media is no longer the oracle of events as much as an arm of the political left and the entertainment industry. Their racially oriented drumbeat is incessant and it is designed to get ratings and sell their products of magazines, newspapers, etc.

Any time a talking head gets on the TV and starts pointing out what someone inadvertantly said that might offend someone, I turn the channel. I'm sick of it.

It is all designed to keep us all at each others throats and we should all refuse to participate in their ugly game. We are killing the peace and tranquility of our own country, and destroying the chances any of us have of living in harmony.

Coach Deberry should refuse to talk to the news media after what they tried to do to him. All coaches should make it explicitly clear to the sports reporters that none of them will be allowed in the locker rooms or in the coaches offices if their reporting insults him, his players, or the institutions. News organizations would get the message in no time at all.

Coach Deberry didn't mean anything negative by what he said as I know of Afro-American football coach, an ex-Raider player who told me that and I quote him "in modern football you you put our White corn-feds on the O-line and our Black speed on the outside". He meant nothing ominous by what he said, but I understood what he meant, and I totally agreed with him.

We all just need to stop all this nonsense.
