Chesapeake's rally shocks West Lawn
The host Owls build an 8-2 lead before the Virginia champion comes back in seventh.

Words cannot describe how the West Lawn Owls felt Thursday night.

The biggest upset of the tournament was right there. They had it in their hands, but the young Owls just couldn't hold on.

"This was our season in a nutshell," West Lawn coach Zack Williams said. "It's just one of those things where you cannot give state champions extra chances."

Chesapeake turned those extra chances into a big seventh inning and a 13-9 win over West Lawn in Game 4 of the American Legion Mid-Atlantic Regional at Owls Field.

The comeback was unfathomable after six innings because Chesapeake was dead in the water. Post 280 was lifeless, having underestimated its opponent.

"They really put us in our place early," Chesapeake coach Larry Bowles said.

Chesapeake went with its No. 3 pitcher, James Bedi, over Cody Cox, a 21st-round pick by the Cubs.

Bedi had seven strikeouts, but the mistake became clear in the fifth when Cox had to enter as Post 280's third pitcher. He struck out the side - after another run scored on an error - blowing fastballs by the Owls.

All the West Lawn batters could do was laugh as they walked back to the dugout.

At that time, it was OK to laugh. They were leading 8-2.

That quickly changed.

A misplay in center in the seventh was followed by three straight singles. And a few batters later, Dean Ali tripled in three runs and scored the game-tying run on a stolen base.

Josh Carter also stole home moments later to make it 9-8.

It was a deflating moment for the host squad, which was alive and buzzing through six innings.

Chris Gehris was a big reason for that, holding Chesapeake to two runs on four hits before the disastrous seventh.

"Chris Gehris pitched a heck of a game for us," Williams said. "It was really overshadowed by this whole thing."

Gehris retired eight of the first nine batters, but with two outs in the third, Chesapeake broke through.

Leland Clemmons walked and stole second before scoring Matt Dickason's single to right field. Dickason advanced to third on an overthrow and scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.

Gehris followed with three scoreless innings as the Owls took an 8-2 lead.

"They're s****** and they execute," Bowles said. "I'm really impressed with that team over there."

Bowles also was happy to see his team overcome West Lawn's early onslaught.

Bedi cruised through three innings, but the Owls teed off in the fourth for five runs, chasing him without recording an out in the fourth.

Adam Bainbridge and Connor Gobright led off the inning with back-to-back walks, and both scored as Chad Swavely reached on an error - it was one of six Chesapeake errors.

On three occasions, Post 280 chose to field bunts and throw to somewhere other than first for the sure out. Twice that led to errors and a third time the throw wasn't in time, allowing the Owls to load the bases.

Justin Behrenshausen, who singled and scored in the third on Gehris' triple, took advantage of the mistakes with his two-run single to right, fueling the five-run fourth.

West Lawn added single tallies in the fifth and sixth before the comeback was mounted.

The Owls will come back today with an elimination game against Spring City in the second game of a 9:30 a.m. doubleheader.

"I think we have a good chance to win today," Williams said. "The kids just have to want this. They have to want to come back."
Cody Cox pitched a no hitter but walks and errors allowed New Jersey to score 4 runs. Josh Carter came in the 7th inning and was lights out over the next 3 innings. Leeland Clemmons hit a towering 3 run homer over left (380) field fence to make it 4-3. Matt Dickason and James Bedi get key hits to tie game and Thomas Dushatinski gets winning RBI single to seal the deal in bottom of 10th.

Chesapeake Post 280 plays Maryland 8PM tomorrow night (7 August)

Chesapeake rallies to reach winners final
Chesapeake's Cody Cox lived up to the hype, tossing six hitless innings.

But the Chicago Cubs draft pick walked five, and a few errors in the fourth allowed Brooklawn to take a four-run lead despite not having a hit.

Cox was pulled after the sixth without getting the offensive support needed to take down the 12-time national regional champions.

Fortunately for the Virginia champions, that offense came late.

Chesapeake tied it in the eighth and won 5-4 in 10 innings in Game 8 of the American Legion Mid-Atlantic Regional Friday at Owls Field.

Brooklawn led 4-3 before Chesapeake tied it up.

Chesapeake will face Wicomico in the winners bracket final, the last of three games today.

The day will start with two elimination games. Newark and Spring City will play at noon, followed by South Charleston and Brooklawn.

Ali gives up 7 hits, 0 runs, 3 SO and 4BB and gets the win due to the GREAT defense behind him (Josh Carter-3rd, Matt Dickason-SS, Hunter Kensey-2nd, Jordan Adair-1st, Troy Applin-L, Leeland Clemmons-C, Sean Wolf-RF, Nick Michaud-C) . In the 3rd Josh Carter hit a 2 run home run (380ft) over left field fence. Jordan Adair came in to close the game for Post 280. After getting 2 outs in the top of 9th, with runners on 1st and 2nd and a 3-2 count, Jordan pauses begins his move, runners break, Jordan fakes to third, spins and catches runner on first moving to 2nd for 3rd out and game.

Josh Carter goes 2 for 4 with 2RBI, HR
Matt Dickason goes 1 for 2 with 1BB

Post 280 now is the only undefeated team in Regional but unlike most 8 team double elimination, will play Del out of the losers bracket. By winning tonights game, Post 280 is guaranteed to play in championship game win or lose tomorrow (win tomorrow, means team would have to beat us twice Monday, lose tomorrow, Monday is 1 game championship)
