PLAYER OF THE YEAR

ZACH RUTHERFORD, Western Branch, Senior outfielder/infielder/pitcher

  • Staff ace who helped the Bruins win the Group 6A state championship – the program’s first since 2004.
  • Finished 11-1 on the mound with a 1.29 ERA and 10 complete games.
  • Batted .479 with 30 RBIs, 30 runs scored and 19 stolen bases.
  • Played first base, third base, outfield and pitcher.
  • Monitor-Merrimac Conference Player of the Year and All-South Region co-Player of the Year.
  • Signed with Old Dominion.

JEFF ADAMS, Maury, Senior outfielder/pitcher

  • Batted .492 with two home runs and a .723 slugging percentage.
  • On the mound, went 7-1 with a 3.41 ERA.
  • Atlantic Conference Player of the Year and first-team All-South Region (5A).
  • A four-year starter at Maury, headed to Tufts University.

CHASE ANDERSON, Granby, Junior third baseman/pitcher

  • Went 8-0 with a 0.83 ERA on the mound and batted .359 for a team that won the Coastal Conference No. 1 seed.
  • Coastal Conference co-Player of the Year.
  • “He is everything you want out of a player.” Granby coach Robbie Butler.

DEVON FISHER, Western Branch, Senior catcher

  • Batted .450 and threw out all five baserunners who attempted to steal.
  • First-team All-Monitor-Merrimac Conference and All-South Region (6A).
  • Signed with Virginia, but instead accepted a contract offer from the Boston Red Sox, who made him a 20th-round draft pick.

LOGAN HARRELSON, Great Bridge, Senior pitcher/outfielder

  • Staff ace who finished 6-1 with a 1.95 ERA and 40 strikeouts over 40 innings – and only five walks.
  • Batted .387 with six doubles and 22 RBIs.
  • PenSouth Conference Player of the Year and second-team All-South Region (5A).

AUSTIN HENRY, First Colonial, Junior shortstop

  • Batted .418 with 12 RBIs, a .580 on-base percentage and 20 runs scored.
  • Nearly flawless in the field, committed only three errors all season.
  • First-team All-Coastal Conference and All-South Region.
  • “Gets to many balls that many shortstops don’t get near.” First Colonial coach Scott Stubbe.

CARTER HERON, Cox, Senior second baseman

  • Batted .471 with 22 stolen bases and 16 RBIs.
  • First-team All-Coastal Conference and second-team All-South Region (6A).

COLBY HIGGERSON, Great Bridge, Junior shortstop/pitcher

  • Led Great Bridge with a .421 batting average and finished with 12 stolen bases and six doubles.
  • On the mound, finished 2-0 and struck out 20 batters over 11 innings in relief.
  • First-team All-PenSouth Conference and second-team All-South Region (5A).
  • Committed to Radford.

CULVER LAMB, Tallwood, Senior third baseman/pitcher

  • Struck out 97 batters – and walked only 10 – over 57 innings and compiled a 7-2 record and 0.36 ERA on the mound.
  • Batted .377 with nine doubles and 19 RBIs.
  • Coastal Conference co-player of the year and first-team All-South Region (6A).
  • Signed with VMI.

CHRISTIAN LOWRY, Hickory, Senior outfielder

  • Batted .413 with five home runs, 12 doubles, 14 stolen bases and 17 RBIs for a team that won the Group 5A state title – the program’s first state championship.
  • First-team All-PenSouth Conference and All-South Region, and a two-time All-Tidewater first-team selection.
  • Signed with Virginia.

DAVID MULAC, Kellam, Senior first baseman

  • Batted .465 with 22 RBIs for a team that finished second in the Atlantic Conference.
  • Committed only one error this season while playing mostly at first base and some behind the plate.
  • First-team All-Atlantic Conference and All-South Region (5A).

TYLER NELIN, Kellam, Junior infielder/catcher/pitcher

  • One of the Region’s most versatile players, spending time at first base, third base, pitcher and catcher.
  • Batted .418 with 15 RBIs and on the mound compiled a 6-2 record with a 2.28 ERA.
  • First-team All-Atlantic Conference and All-South Region (5A).
  • Committed to George Mason.

KIETON RIVERS, Nansemond River, Junior shortsop

  • Anchored a team that went unbeaten during the Ironclad Conference regular-season and tournament.
  • Batted .481 with 20 RBIs, eight doubles, 17 stolen bases and 27 runs scored.
  • Ironclad Conference Player of the Year.
  • Committed to Coastal Carolina.

Congrats to the players named to the first and second teams with a special shout out to Zach Rutherford for earning Player of the Year honors!  Wonder how helpful it was to Zach (and the voters) to be a two way player.  Seem to recall that past winners were not necessarily two way players.

 

Also noticed that the first team was fairly well split between juniors and seniors and that only one freshman made the second team, Mikey Polansky (Hickory).
