A Division 1 freshman plays very little. He plays well in summer ball and asks for a release in August. Coach talks player out of it because "next year is your year". Player is now playing very little again. QUESTION: Scholarship-wise or otherwise did the coach have something to lose by not granting the player's request that maybe didn't have the player's best interest in mind?

Unless the coach tells you, it would be hard to know if he had another motive. I'd suggest checking out the NCAA website (although I have a hard time navigating it). I always thought a player had to ask for a release before or upon scholly renewal and I was under the assumption it was June. My comments are NOT answers, check with NCAA.
Player can ask for a release at any time before that semester ends. Coach does not have ot give it.
Maybe there are other players better than this particular player.
With the new penalties by the NCAA, some coaches
are going to be reluctnat to hand out releases, especially if that player is contributing significantly to the team's GPA.
Player just needs to come right out and ask to be released and tell coach the reason and ask for reason why he will not release him.
