Any one have any experience with this.

My son has thrown a lot this fall and I’m shutting him down. I also will have him see a Doctor but have to go through the HMO hassle.

He has never thrown harder in his life and has been awesome behind the plate. His shoulder gets stiff (never had this before) the next day but he claims no pain. When rested he says his tendons in his shoulder almost feel like he has a dislocated shoulder – very loose. He has never had a dislocated shoulder but that is his best description. I have let this go on for a couple of weeks now (my bad) but when he throws he looks fine and says he feels fine.

Part of me thinks he is just pushing himself more and some discomfort would be normal – the other part of me is scared that this is a symptom of something else.

Slight background: 15 ½ year old, 6 ft 185 lbs, POP under 2.1 – now maybe less. Last two week schedule – Rec like team game on Thursday, Practice Tues or Wed, PG events on weekend – catches 1 game on Friday and 1 on Saturday. Don’t know if this has anything to do with his shoulder but the PG events have been all wood and he plays all 4 games on weekend (DH on non-catching games).

When we go to the Doctor I would like to be as informed as possible and ask the right questions. Any advice or experience with this?
To our military men, women and families - You are all awesome - that flag is yours and I thank you for the opportunity for giving me the honor of removing my cap prior to every baseball game I see.

Catcher09 - If you find a good orthopedist and have your son explain his symptoms exactly, they will know what to do and to test for.

Just a reminder to everyone since insurance has been mentioned here several times recently. The time to discover your insurance benefits and the physicians that participate with your plan is when you're reviewing and choosing a plan.... not afterwards. Insurance companies are like other businesses... you get what you pay for. That plan's cost is determined in part by what plan you choose. If we anticipate wanting to have the flexibility to go to any doctor we choose, a PPO should be the option we choose. Just a bit of friendly advice from a nurse in the insurance biz! Smile

Catcher09,

My son had a similar problem after his Soph. season. It was his 1st time playing Varsity and then Senior Legion. Too many games and not enough rest. I shut him down from playing fall ball and took him to an orthopedic sports doctor. The doctor diagnosed soft tissue damage that would heal over time. But he said it takes 3 months for soft tissue injuries to completely heal and my son had to do exercises for his shoulder so scar tissue would not build up. My son did no throwing from mid September until mid Febuary and was 100% for his H.S. season.

Since then, he has made sure to not over-extend himself and has not had any recurring symptoms.
