2016 just got an email today from Student Sports inviting him to the "Area Code Baseball Training Camp" sponsored by New Balance, in one of four locations around the country this fall.  They say the camp is free and 2016 must've been recommended by either HS, Travel, College coach or MLB scout.

I know that it is not an invitation to an Area Code tryout, but is it worth doing??

Thanks in advance for any input.

Here is a link with a little more info.  Within the link is another at the bottom which shoots you to frequently asked questions.  I don't know anything specific and am not connected other than my son got an invite too so I went looking on-line.  The one thing I would say is that since 2015's are invited, and their AC experience has passed, it would not seem like it is connected in some sort of "pre-tryout" way.  I could be wrong, but that's my guess.

Sounds like everyone is getting these emails BUT sounds like a bait and hook deal to me. To be honest the Area Code games are made for scouts by the scouts. They usually come around running around and Area Code tryouts are held in different areas of the US. With that said its a program that runs summer ball and will sell the "Camps" to get you there and play for them. Granted your son might be good enough but we have got to be realistic and see if our kid is that talented. But if your kid is good enough a scout will find him and invite him to tryout but someone has to recommend you to even tryout and it would have to be a scout or a close partner of one.

Cost to attend is free.  The question I have is do they try and sell you something after you attend this camp?  Might be worth the drive to find out.

You might be right. Don't know who all runs Area Code or Student Sports but there is a certain program that is always on Student Sports that runs its team as a business. So it might be to get you there etc and once you are there they will probably drop the hammer on everything that they got. Unfortunately we all know all of our kids will go pro or even play at a collegiate level. It don't matter who your son plays with if hes good the community talks and they will find you. No need to dish out all this money and invest your savings to that type of business. I just don't personally like the misleading and information given to some parents.

Here's a link to an old thread taking about the camp from 2008:

It seems that it is legit but that it really isn't a conduit to getting a tryout.  That said, it could be an opportunity to get 2016player in front of more folks... The cost is really only the hotel for one night and the time to get there and back.

Depending on school and fall baseball schedule, it might work.

Thanks for all the follow up!

Son attended the NE Area Code camp on Sept 27. Correct in that you have to be recommended by a scout/coach to receive an invitation. While there was some skills assessment, the bulk of the day is instructional. There was no cost to attend and nobody tried to sell him (or us) anything. Additionally, because the camp was sponsored by New Balance & Marucci, all players received a bunch of free gear (turf cleats, shirt, hat, shorts, baseball pants, batting gloves, wrist bands, socks & backpack). Gatorade was also a sponsor and they provided free drinks and protein bars for the entire day. There were at least 4 MLB scouts there assisting with the camp (likely more - just not in full uniform). Eric Cressey & staff was there and provided great info about conditioning.I didn't get the sense that it was a pre-tryout for AC try-outs next season. Well-run and organized. If it isn't a major travel exercise, I would definitely recommend attending if a player is invited.

My 2018 has attended the camp the last 2 years.  As stated above, well run and top notch all the way.  The first year he went they did baseball activities, threw bullpens, BP etc.  They have done away with the "baseball" activities and it is more for teaching the kids about training, the mental aspect etc.  If you have the opportunity to go, it is a really great experience for the kids and of course the swag is a big hit.  Just make sure your kids understand that their wont be any baseball activities per say such as BP or bullpens etc.
