Wow, culture shock. Nothing to do at home last weekend so a fried and I took the 400 mile trip south to sunny, warm St Louis Wink for a round of golf and to watch the kids first collegient start.

Early conclusions were that my golf game needs more than the winters rest I had imagined. I still hate driving any distances. I lost 39.75 at Harrahs (because I refused to lose all $40 I put in). And, I now look at a hotel as a place to rest not party.

To top that off for the first time in my life I felt like the parent of an adult Frown.

Now the college baseball. What a difference in play, in attitude, and in preparation. I was expecting to see this wet behind the ears 18 year old on the mound. Instead, I saw this athlete who has blended in with the rest of the adult males on the team to form a close knit family. Where were my Depends when I needed them.

On a good note Ryan got the win and improved to 2-0-2. In St Louis he went 7 innings, allowed 7 hits, 3 earned runs, 13k's, and 1 walk.

The drive home was still the pits, my golf still needs much work, I still lost $39.75 to a stinkin machine, but this parent of an adult slept well seeing what I did on and off the field.

rz1...I'm glad you had the opportunity to see your son's game over the weekend. There is nothing like seeing the changes in your son as he matures into an adult, both physically and mentally. I'm glad he won the game. Good for him and for you.

On a lighter note: If you had played for another 1.75, you might have won some big money.

My response to that is ... Eek WOW !!!

Sounds like he did great, and even tho you are $39.75 poorer in the wallet, you are richer now than you imagined in your wildest dreams, right? Ryan is living his dream and doing quite well at it apparently ... so enjoy enjoy enjoy manrunning

I can relate to the dislike of driving long distances, not my favorite thing either. However I will continue to do it in order to watch my guys play. RZ ..... try driving from east Tennessee to a school one hour west of St. Louis! Made that trip for a football game last year.

Congrats to little RZ ... what a great start.

Here's a link to the UIC article for all.

This weekend's trip .... only 422 miles! Wouldn't miss it for the world. Smile

Bob,

RZ, I hope you can enjoy and cherish many more trips. It seems like yesterday we sat in Atlanta watching our sons first. In the blink of an eye we are now counting there are only 27 and hopefully postseason left in his college career. I'm sure Bob will confirm the senior year is one filled with emotions for a parent. I doubt he's abusing those Michelin's for nothing. We fly nearly 5000 miles every weekend desperate to see every inning and at bat. Very sleep deprived but wouldn't trade it for anything. If baseball is life, watching your son complete his collegiate baseball career might be darn close to baseball heaven!!!
