Took my 12-year old team to the Cooperstown Dreams Park in New York for a tournament this past week. This is a trip that is every bit as much for the parents (maybe dads mostly) as it is for the kids. The kids get to play a week of pretty high level baseball (80 teams there each week) and we dads get to re-live our childhood through the games and through the Baseball Hall of Fame. The moms who love baseball get all of that too, plus the Cooperstown area is quite nice with rolling hills...landscape much like Napa Valley...and beautiful lakes to boat and swim in.

Players and coaches stay in bunk houses on the Cooperstown Dreams Park premises. This is GREAT for the kids...not so great for the coaches. Red Face Food is provided cafeteria-style. It was hot-and-humid-as-heck! The weather provided MUCH incentive to get in your air-conditioned car and drive into town regularly to stock up on t-shirts, caps, jerseys and a few classic photos and autographs. Our players got to meet and have a nice long conversation about "what it takes" with Clete Boyer, former NY Yankee and member of their 1961 WS team. One of our players upon seeing a photo of him with Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris naively asked, "Are you still friends with those guys?" Eek

I thoroughly enjoyed the Baseball HOF (1st trip for me). It is well worth a 1-day diversion for any of you travelling to the East Coast on business or vacation. I'd like to show every young kid Joe Morgan's glove (smaller than small) and I got to proudly correct a museum worker who pointed me to the 1976 "Yankees" World Series trophy (the Reds swept the Yankees 4-0 in that Series). The HOF plaques were awesome!...and inspiring. The photographs throughout the Hall were hard to walk by and I could have spent hours in my favorite corner focused on the Big Red Machine. It seemed like there's a corner like that for nearly every baseball fan.

On the field, our team did ok...finishing in the top 32 (out of 80). Its about what I expected as we are a good team made up almost entirely of kids from one community. The top teams were built for one thing...to win. The Broward Bulldogs (coached by former MLB pitcher Alex Fernandez...they didn't stay in the dorms with the other teams) won it over the Washington State Shockers (with an equal number of players from the Dominican Republic as the state of Washington). Have you ever seen a 6 ft. 4 in. 12-year old? Confused I have now (at least I guess I have ). East Cobb was there as well...we played them, holding them to only a 2-0 lead until very late in the game with a slow, crafty lefty and nearly causing their coach to come apart at the seams on several occasions as their hitters could only muster some weak ground balls. We faced another team from Georgia who chanted all game long...chants I've never heard before and those chants were pretty sick if you ask me...but to each his own I suppose.

We had some highlights too. Our goals were to be in the top half (accomplished) and to be playing on the final day (Thursday)...also accomplished (sort of) as our final game was extended past midnight Wednesday due to rain. We had a kid throw a 1-hitter in the playoffs. Most fun game I've ever coached in?...we lost it to a team from Orlando, 6-5 in extra innings on a play at the plate...that team went on to play in the final-8. I also had a parent or two get mad at me (whats new?) about playing time although as I look at it from every angle, I don't think they have a beef. And a first for me...out of my 4 sons, finally one who led a high level team in hitting (.555 with NO strikeouts)...he's a pretty good pitcher too, by the way.

I've thought a lot over the last week about whether or not its a good thing to take 12-year olds across the country to play in a baseball tournament. Not sure I feel confident about my answer...but I think in this case, combined with the Cooperstown experience, it was a good thing. Our kids are tired now as they begin their league all stars, but they gained some pretty cool memories which is all that mattered to me. And so did us dads.

Just
Thanks for sharing your experience. We are going with our son in a couple of weeks (week 5). I am excited but also apprehensive about the whole thing. I know my boy is excited to see the Hall of Fame and I have been told Cooperstown is a neat little town.

The expense of course is a concern but I must remember we are creating once in a lifetime memories that hopefully can be shared for years to come. People around here that have gone there have a lot of positive to say about it.
Redbird,

Congratulations. We followed your progress and watched your team on the Internet one day last week (They sure have improved the video stream).

Boomer says "Hey!".

Best of luck the rest of the season!

Regards,
R.

P.S. The sound guy at the All Star tournament plays "Yeah" before each of Boomer's AB's. Pretty funny.

We went in 2002 and we had a blast!! My son was the only 11 year-old on the team. Reading the posts on this thread brought back great memories :-).

We finished in 17th. place, but what a ride!!

To all who went:

How did your team do in the around-the-horn contest?

How about the homerun derby?
That one was really fun! One of our players lost the title in overtime! He was tied in the last round but got beat by one in the first extra round.

How about the throwing contest?

Did your team vist the baseball hat store? That was another big hit in Cooperstown! Everybody on the team bought the most unusual minor league or college team hat they could find!

Did your team buy the personalized wooden bats they sell?

Great memories and great people!! Nothing like going to a baseball tournament where all the parents get along!! Boy, I miss that team!

Sorry for the long post,

Garry
Ross -

We played decently. Glad you could see a game.

VERY funny on the song! Tell Boom all the guys said "Hey". I told them about him last night at practice.

AAU Nationals this year? I see the Carolina Stars are going.

Gerry -

Around the Horn - much worse than we practiced

HR Derby - OK for an 11U hitter

Golden Arm - Our guy finished 2nd.

Personalized Bat - no

Redbird,

I am very excited to say that we are finally putting together a travel team of "our" boys after All Stars. These boys have played together off and on since they were in T-Ball. Most of them made it to the Dixie WS last year and have played for a number of different travel teams currently or in the past.

We are all coming together as a travel team for the first time in Aug. It will be comprised of some very talented players and Boomer is very excited for the opportunity to play with long time friends and teammates.

We will definitely be headed for Cooperstown next year and would love to synchronize our schedule with yours. This will be a very competitive group and the team and parent chemistry should be outstanding.

Finally! It has been a long time in the making and we are all looking forward to the experience. Please let me know your plans for next year.

All the best this season.

just returned from dreams park myself...what a great expereince. My son faced the 2nd seed < friendswood falcons tx > and the 4th seeded rocket city stingers < Al.> the stingers won it all. Both teams had giants on thier teams but they could play some ball. Each had kids throwning in the 70's and had 4 inch drop on the sliders...<rumor had it >...lol...even still we stayed close for a bit then ran into some good hitting.
My son had been hitting the wall all week but, his final at bat against the stingers he hit a 3 run dinger that he will never forget, ditto for me. I have watched from the first and third base box before but, this was awesome. The smile he had was priceless.......
The staff was awesome, esp the grounds crew. 2 hour rain delay and the fields were up and ready in 20 min. T
he barracks and food were just has expected, hot and humid a 10 fan clipped under the bed was well worth the price.
The umps did a fanstastic job. Yes i did say Fanstastic...not one call was wrong. hard to beilieve but you have to give them credit when credit is due.
As for the broward bulldogs the don't pull kids from outside the area like other teams do. I have played with and against them many times and what you see is what you get. Those boys have been together since pinto and have excelled from great coaching and hard work.
we went in 2002 and had a blast. unfortunately, the team didn't play very well until the playoffs (won 3 straight), and a falling out with the manager led to the end of that team.

but the experience was incredible. glad we got to do it.

I can remember all the kids with southern accents going around saying "y'all got pins"?

staying in the barracks with the kids was ridiculously funny. what a group of kids! unfortunately, the manager didn't see the fun in it and punished them after one too many fake farts...
Ross,

We just finished at AAU Nationals tied for 9th. We had the toughest pools in pool play and championship play - it would have been nice to get a draw. In the final 32, we drew the Wills Park Storm (very good team). After beating them, we drew the Central FL Express and played with them for 5 innings in losing 8-5. Not too bad considering, we didn't have our #1 pitcher all week (hurt his arm on vacation) and our #5 hitter.

BTW, Trevor hit 5 bombs (one about 280') for the week.

Finishing 44-20 playing up vs. 12U all year is a success for us.

Our plans are to take the fall off and fire it up over the winter. We plan to go to CDP early and possible AAU Nationals or chase a USSSA Elite 24 bid.

Glad to hear about Boomer and the boys.
Just got back from week 5. We had a great time and hated to see it end. The team finished 6-3. The teams that beat us were 3 of the best teams there including the eventual champ eliminating us in the tournament. I'm real proud of how my son played and the team in general as well.

If you are going be aware there is not a drinking fountain in the place except in the dugouts and half of those don't work and are not available to the general public. They frown big time on you bringing in your own food and water. Nor do they supply any water to the teams. They must buy their own and haul it around. It was a lot of fun but be prepared to be thirsty or fork out a lot of dough for water.
