My 13 year old son's Spring Break is scheduled for March 15 - 19 and wants to do a baseball camp to get a jump start on the season. He'll start throwing in mid February, so while he won't be in mid-season form, he will be on his way to getting in baseball shape.

We're looking turn the whole thing into a little mini-vacation for the family. He does baseball during the day and then we all hit the beach/movies/amusement park/etc. at night. Looking for someplace warm as our winter has been miserable. We've done this before in Myrtle Beach with the Cal Ripkin camp there, but would like to do someplace different.

Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated. He plays short, pitcher and catcher (in that order), so a camp that combines aspects of all three - would be great.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Hi KC Dawg:

My son is 13YO as well and we have been to the Bucky Dent Baseball School for about three times over the years.

It's in Del Ray and we have stayed at a Hilton Garden Inn that is about 5 minutes away in Boca Raton.

You have the same March Break week as we do here in Ontario, Canada. It works out great, as this is not a common week for most states (I think Connecticutt is the same). It means that it's usually one instructor for five kids.

Lots of eating ammenities nearby. We normally catch a game at Florida Atlantic or the Orioles in Ft. Lauderdale.

There are usually some US HS teams at camp (four or five) and that creates an opportunity for games - if there are enough older kids at camp.

Last year my son went to the same area but went with an older 15/16 Ontario-based baseball school. I have talked them into using the Bucky Dent facilities this year and staying at the same hotel.

Glades Mall is nearby and there are some decent baseball specific stores in the area. Of course the beach is nearby as well. Lots of eating possibilities within a few blocks.
Thanks keewart and NLUICCH. I appreciate the input.

NLUICCH, how good is the school? Obviously you must think it was pretty good to have taken your son there three times. Do they specialize in anything in particular, or is it just a week of good baseball fundamentals? Just trying to score as much info. as possible and I really do appreciate the direction.
Hi KC Dawg:

This is a tricky one to answer. We were there between 10 and 12 YO. It was largely fundamentals with a couple of p/u games in the afternoon. The instructors are largely ex minor leaguers. There is one older guy Don who does the pitching and he did a lot of work with my son on finger pressure, etc. He really encouraged kids to experiment at this age with grips etc.

I felt that the hitting instruction was good. The days lasted between 9 and 3 which left time to do other things.

In the past, I have had my son to numerous private instructors. So, I cant say it's the same as a private session with a guy at $60 to $100 an hour when it's $250 a week. Then again, there were nuggets of information that we got there that we didnt get elsewhere.

One afternoon, a guy pitched balls to my son and four other guys for two hours making commentary all the way. And he was pushing them hard throughout.

For us, it had to do with the fact that it was good for the whole family. It got my son on a baseball field (getting used to the hops and swinging against live pitching outdoors again).

The nice thing is that the intructor ratio is good and if you know what you want to accomplish before you get there, there was plenty of opportunity to have an instructor cover it with your kid.

The last time we went, I wasn't really after a hardcore program. We were 3/4 of the way through a hardcore indoor program. I was looking for more of a fun in the sun and try out some of that stuff that the indoor instructors had been pushing hard.

You'll get a certificate with a Juggs speed, bat speed and 60 time on it at the end of the week. They cover the lunch meal too.

Part of the issue too, is that you can have quite a variety of abilities in the kids.
