The Phenom trailer:

Anyone seen new baseball film called, "The Phenom?"  I call it a "film" as it is more sophisticated than most baseball movies.  No cliché story lines here.  Some pretty powerful sub-text and some of it may hit close to home for some baseball families.  Great writing, acting, directing, filming, etc.  Film stars a new face named Johnny Simmons who does a great job playing role of #3 pick in MLB draft.  Paul Giamatti (son of former MLB Commissioner Bart Giamatti) plays a sports shrink, and Ethan Hawke as the baseball dad.

This is NOT your average baseball movie.  Lots of plot twists and one major cliff hanger.

Only flaw was the baseball technical nuance.  Was a bit of a "swing and miss" in the wardrobe category and a major strike call on the special effects ball movement of "The Phenom's" supposed 100-mph fastball.  But I will forgive the director and producers as the rest of the film is powerful and thought provoking.

Not sure when it was released but I watched on my Time Warner On-Demand last night.  Not sure if it ever made it to the theatres?

Whiplash meets Good Will Hunting meets Trouble with the Curve?  It looks like it's actually in one theater here (Atl area), so it must have gotten a release at some point.

Terrible baseball mechanics in baseball movies bug me way more now than they did 10-15 years ago. One pitfall of a being a baseball dad that I didn't foresee. Is it really that hard to find guys who look like they've thrown a baseball/swung a bat before who can also act?

I will give Simmons a pass on his mechanics.  Yes, it's hard to watch him pitch and believe he is throwing 98mph and a #3 pick in MLB Draft (as per storyline).  But he nails everything else; the "sub-text" shall we say?

Director captures so much of the stuff we can all relate to but have never stopped to think about.  The pit stop at gas station on the team bus at 2AM when he calls his HS coach????  Come on.  Great cinematography, artistic, realistic, dialogue,  deep.

I give the film .

The last time I saw a baseball movie trailer on here it was maybe 6-months ago?  Someone added the link for the trailer for it?  Scene where the veterans on the college team duck taped the freshman to the outfield wall and fungo'd balls at them????  Personally, I could not even finish the trailer it looked so stupid.  I think I X'd out of trailer when the players were taking bong hits????

So if you liked that movie?  You may not like this one?  But I have no idea.
