My son is wanting a specific bat, I'm planning on ordering it this morning. There are two lengths 31 or 32 inches. Which length does it need to be for high school baseball? Also does it need to be a certain weight?
I believe most high school requirements are based on weight, with -3 being the norm. Length is generally a batters preference based on their ability to get the bath through the zone on a fastball and their general overall comfort level with the bat. At least that is the way it is in North Carolina.
tank you for your response....i suppose the question i was asking was what are the rules concerning the weight and length in high school baseball...I'd hate to buy an illegal bat ya know...
BESR approved (has to say that on the bat); -3, meaning 31" in length and 28 oz, or 32" and 29 oz, or 33" and 30 oz. Which length, as Michael's Dad said, is up to the individual player's preferences. These are national rules, I believe, enacted by the NFHS, and should be the same in any state.
I would like to add you need to make sure the BESR sticker is on the bat. With out the BESR sticker it does not matter if the bat is -3 and says High School Approved.
Most High School kids use either 32-29 or 33-30. It must have a BESR or Bat Exit Speed Ratio stamped on the bat. Do not buy a bat that has a sticker on it make sure that it is stamped. If the sticker gets defaced and can not be read then it is not legal if checked. High School bats must be -3. Depending on how strong your son is or how much bat he can handle would depend on which size to use. Better off using a bat that is a little small than one that is too big.
Coach May, Good post one of the biggest mistakes made by High School baseball players is they use to big a bat. To clarify my point about the BESR rating I did not intend to suggest the sticker was better than the stamp. Clearly the stamp is better for the reasons you mentioned. The point I wanted to make is that there are some -3 bats that say high school approved that have neither a BESR stamp nor sticker and will not be allowed, and umpires do check.
