deemax - This hit me like a ton of bricks. I just saw him a few weeks ago at a Stanford game...we briefly chatted.

Your father was a WONDERFUL man who loved his children and grandchildren VERY much. Every time I talked with him over the past several years...he ALWAYS spoke of his family and the happiness you all brought to him. Every single time!

I am so very, very sorry. Please accept my condolences to you and your entire family. He and you are in my prayers.
I had to read your post several times to be sure you were posting about bbscout,I'm stunned and very sadden by this news.

Your dad was very helpful to me by answering questions about scouting and minor league baseball, I saved all his PMs. He even introduced himself to my son while he was scouting the Royals in Arizona.

Your father touched many lives though this website. My deepest, deepest sympathies to you and your family
deemax,
My deepest sympathies are extended to your entire family.
Doug was so proud of his family and loved each of you so very much. His feelings for his grandchildren were wonderful could readily be seen when he changed his Avatar to their pictures.
I met Doug through the HSBBW. He was so kind to me and provided so much encouragement and advice to help our son. I will never forget his PM to me when I questioned the likelihood of a DIII getting scouted and drafted.
Despite Julie's earlier request, I just could never delete that first set of PM's with your Dad. It brings a tear to my eye to go back and read them now.
I loved seeing and speaking with your Dad when he was scouting at Stanford.
There is an emptiness knowing bbscout won't be posting on the HSBBW. We all benefited tremendously everytime he did.
I am so very, very sorry to read this about your Dad.

I share the same sentiment as others.... I cannot believe what I'm reading. My deepest sympathy to you and the entire family.

BBScout was one of the kindest and most helpful posters on this site. He was one of the first people that I turned to on the site for some help in understanding baseball beyond a HS level. I was and will always be deeply grateful.

He will be missed by all of us here on HSBBW. May your family feel the love and support of many around you.
I second the motion Racab. ( very nice tribute!)

I too am at a loss for words.
I have watched bbscout's posts very intensely while here on the HSBBW. It was easy for one to notice his genuiness and desire to help others. I think it would be fair to say that he was a gentle admired force on this forum.
I thank him and your family for the time we had with him and I send you strength and sympathy through a most difficult time.
Our hearts go out to all of bbscouts family.
You are in our prayers.

I have picked up the phone more than one time to call Doug for his baseball advice. I always respected the man and his advice. While I never met Doug personally I feel as if I knew him very well and feel as if he were my friend. Deemax your dad has touched many and he did it with such class. My thoughts will be of him for a long time. I know the family has many great memories of a great person. I appreciate what he did.
Fungo
Dale,

This is by far the most shocking post I have ever read on this site.

Words just cannot express my sadness, and it is difficult to type through the tears.

I never had the privilege of meeting your father in person, but I corresponded with him by e-mail and PM occasionally. He was always, of course, extremely knowledgeable and very helpful to so many of our members. He always conducted himself with class. But what impressed me even more was his obvious love for his children and grandchildren. I don't think there could ever have been a more devoted and proud father and grandfather.

My very deepest sympathies to you and your family on the loss of this wonderful man. We will all feel a huge loss here for a very, very long time, and I'm sure that we will find some way to pay a lasting tribute to Doug McMillan, our beloved bbscout.

You know more than any of us what a giving, loving, kind man your father was. He helped so many of us here on many levels in many, always positive ways. I knew him only through the website and our PMs, and it is testimony to his character that we all feel as if we have lost a good friend.

My heart goes out to you and your family.

We love you, Doug.
Deemax -

Can't even begin to tell you how sad I am to hear this news. Your Dad was a terrific guy and one of my all-time favorite baseball people. Had a chance to talk with him on many occasions when he was scouting at Cal games over the past several years. Always talking about his family and very proud of you all. I never heard him say a bad word about anyone, and never saw him without a smile on his face. Thoughts and prayers to you all.
deemax,

I am at a loss for words. I just received an email notifying me of this and I just can't believe it. Doug and I talked a few times on the phone and I enjoyed it every time. We not only shared a love for the game of baseball but also an appreciation for the San Francisco Giants.

My thoughts go out to you and your family. Your dad will be missed!

Jason
I am stunned and so terribly sorry to hear this. I only had the privilege of meeting him once, at a Stanford game, but he just radiated a genuine niceness and kindness, and I always learned so much from his posts here as well. I have actually thought of him often.

I am very sad and will keep you and your family in my heart. Please know that your grief is shared by us.
This a a sad and gigantic loss. Doug would sometimes PM me to say he agreed with something I might have posted or ask a question rather than open a can of worms by posting. I took it as a big compliment always, that someone like him would take the time to do something like that.

deemax, I'm so very sorry. All I can do is pay Doug the ultimate baseball compliment!

RIP Doug, You were very good for the game of baseball.

Probably more important though, is the way Doug felt about his family!

We will all feel the loss and Doug's family has my very deepest sympathy. God, please take good care of this great man!
deemax:

Like many other members who have posted previously I didn't know your father, but from the posts of those who did know him it is abundantly clear that your father was a great, knowledgeable, caring, and loving man. He was devoted to baseball, this website, his family, and helping others.

Your father's legacy is secure deemax. Be very proud of him. Your family was blessed to have him as a father. We were blessed to have him as part of our HSBBW family as well.

Thank you for letting us know.

Stunned....Saddened...and saying goodbye with great reverence..

IMO...The best measure of the man is the human results he leaves behind...

...Didn't know bbscout personally but his posts always commanded my attention, respect, and perhaps more importantly always carried a personal touch...

...charcateristics that I am certain will continue with his following generations...

...and with those thousands he touched here...

Deemax;

My friend from Seattle received the news from Scott Ramsey.

Doug McMillan was a great friend and our AC Manager for the SF giants team. I am in tears as I write this e-mail.

Doug in 1996 selected several players from Oakland who did not have ability to travel to Long Beach. With the coordinated efforts of the
Northern California Scouts Association, we assisted in bus fare from Oakland to Long Beach.

Doug is story of a "hero" to the game. Doug recognize Nick Johnson, Jimmy Rollins and many others to our programs.

Bob Williams
Such a great loss to the Baseball Community, I truly am sorry for your loss.

He was one of the very first people I met on this site when I joined, him and Fungo made me feel very welcomed here. He was always one to answer any question I had over the years that I talked to him.

My deepest condolences to you and your family.

I'm so sorry.

He was a great asset to this board, much less the game.

He was also a classy guy on this board, and I'm sure in life as well.
I was shocked to read your post, but so grateful that you took time to let us know. Your dad was a wonderful man who helped so many through this site. He always took time to answer my questions, support posts, and provided congrats for accomplishments.

He was a good man and will be missed by all of us! I pray that God will give you peace and strength in the days to come.

Dale,

I just logged on, and was shocked to read this. I am very sorry to hear this, please accept my sincerest condolences. I'll be sure to let some of the local boys who've grown to know your wonderful father of his passing. I hadn't known him all that long or well, but will remember some wonderful conversations about local kids, and about his playing days that he shared stories of. He truly was one of the grand gentlemen of baseball in these parts, and is going to be greatly missed by lots of local people, both inside and out of this great game he loved.

I'm very, very sorry to hear of this. Doug, and your family, will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Deemax,

I never met your dad in person but considered him a friend and felt I knew him through this board, where I've always enjoyed his knowledgeable posts, never with a trace of "Big League'ing", which he could have rightly done as he knew far far more than most of us regulars.

My dad died in 1981 and I still miss him, but have always remembered something a guy told me at the funeral-"In time, you'll get used to this but you'll never get over it, just keep on plugging". He was right.

My sincere condolences and may God bless your family and hold you close.

Hokieone
DeeMax, I am another who feels a loss and sends my sympathy and prayers to you and your family.

We often looked to BBScout for advice, read his words like we were in class, learning and absorbing.

For all the differences with others, your dad always delivered his opinions with class and dignity.
I have learned much here from him, but more than baseball, about people in general.
He seemed to always be giving back.
Deemax ...

Didn't have a chance to check boards or message yesterday and was advised of your dad's passing in an e-mail from a friend. It is no surprise that in your time of deep sadness, being the son of Doug McMillan, you would take the time to remember his friends and admirers and let us know what has happened. Thank you so much for honoring us that way.

Had the good fortune to meet up with your dad at a baseball game in So Cal several years ago, and several times after that. He was so easy to locate in the stands ... a very classy looking man who had more class in his little finger than many people have in their whole bodies. His wisdom and knowledge of the game was enlightening, and he always managed to share it with a calm and caring demeanor. His love for his family was probably even more evident than his love of the game of baseball. He will be sorely missed by everybody who had the chance to bump elbows with him, in person and in cyber-space.

May you and your family find comfort in that and may God cause your memories to outshine your sorrow.

deemax - my deepest condolences on the passing of your father. Most importantly, it sounds like he was a great husband, father, and grandfather as well as a great friend to those who knew him.
I read everything he posted and still have dozens of pages printed out of his posts over the years. It always amazed me that he and a few others of the true professionals in the game took time to post here and help people.
bbscout will be missed and again so sorry for your loss.
bbscout and I met on the hsbaseballweb. We agreed. We disagreed. We sparred with each other many times. We even yelled at each other. Me more than him. Yet, in the last year or so, it became obvious that we saw things the same way. A result of my learning and his patience.

I would throw him a dagger and he would deflect it. I would throw a dagger at someone else and he would intercept it. And when the daggers came my way he would do the same for me. He never whined about it. He just did it. It was his presence, his wisdon, his way, that would redirect the discussion back to the topic.

It was like school kids bickering and then the prinicpal walked in. It was like the rookie pitcher was shaken and then Sparky came to the mound.

It was like players talking hitting and then Ted Williams walked in.

bbscout and I had several private conversations, both by email and by phone. I was always impressed and humbled by his knowledge.

I read every word he ever wrote with the utmost respect. I would read it. Analyze it. Digest it. I would try everything he said...hitting or throwing. I would be excited every time I opened a site and he had made a post. What was I going to learn today?

How does someone you barely know make you hurt like this?

Stunned and saddened is an understatement. Your dad was a great man who earned all the respect he received. We have PM'd many times and as others have stated, I looked forward to his posts as they were always insightful and had a wealth of information from someone who has been there.

My sincere condolences to you, Brett and the rest of the family. He will be missed.

Frank
I know this is a repetitive sentiment (but so a very true one), but I am just truly shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of BBscout. I had never personally met him. Nor had I ever even communicated personally with BBscout via PM. But I still feel a profound sense of loss. I will miss his presence on this board and the knowledge he so freely shared. My condolences Deemax to you and your family. Heaven is a bit richer now for having BBscout in its ranks.

My deepest condolences to the family of bbscout...he was deeply, deeply respected and a great personality. I, too, did not know him, but stopped to read everything he posted. I always pictured him as one of those "old school" scouts who really loved and knew the game.
deemax, thank you for taking the time in the midst of your profound loss to allow us to share in your sorrow.
DeeMax,

My deepest sympathy! I lost both of my parents last year and know how bad it hurts. But you will have some great memories to help you through the tough times.

Your dad was a great man and a great baseball man. And the very fact that you shared this with everyone this morning speaks volumes about you as well.

As an 8-year veteran to the baseball Internet, I will say that I respected your dad more than any other poster.

Best wishes to you and your family. It just takes time.

Demaax,
Your Dad was a big help to me. I too am in shock and would like for you to know that my family will be praying for your family.
Dmac, made no bones about "not caring" much for softball, YET, always took the time to comment on clips of my daughter that I sent to him.

He was a "Giver" in every sense of the word...

Bbscout: Is this heaven?
Gabreil: No its Kansas…..just kidding bbscout, ……your scout pass works here at the pearly gates.
Bbscout: Sweet…thanks Gabs!
Gabriel: No problem, the bells have been ringing for hours…so you have already earned your wings. Go to the press box and pick out a pair.
Bbscout: Thanks Gabs….eh…where God?
Gabriel: Last I saw him; he was down in the bullpen.
Bbscout: Perfect....

Bbscout gets his wings and heads down to the home bullpen

God: Bbscout, nice to see you again.
Bbscout: Again?
God: Bbscout, you have been talking to me everyday, in the car, in the stands, all the time, I’ve always been with you.
Bbscout: Oh….
God: By the way…I can do without the, “God **** it, can’t he throw a strike?”
Bbscout: Sorry, I didn’t know you were listening.
God: You did say my name, but that’s ok, I forgive you.
God: Is there anything you want to ask me?
Bbscout: Well, I would like to know the definitive answer on pitching mechanics….
God: We are going to be here a while…..
Bbscout: Also, let’s see if we can work on the elbow, a lot of kids hurt their elbow….
God: Casey Stingle is already working on that with Cy Young and Dizzy Dean…the problem is that I can’t always understand what Casey is saying.
Bbscout: This is heaven……….

deemax.........

My deepest condolences to you and your family and to us the HSBBW who will miss his contributions.....

I will not pretend to offer you any advice on how to deal with this loss........22 years have come and gone since my own father left us and I still wonder when I will ever get beyond it.....

but I am with him, and he with me.....in all those things we shared.......so I urge you wrap yourself in those ties that bind.

In my daily devotions I will remember your father....while I struggle with the greater will.

My hearfelt sympathies....

May God carry you Doug to the place where we can all meet again and help prepare for us a paradise where we can fulfill all our dreams.

My thoughts, prayers and deepest condolences to this great family.

Until we meet again my friend, I care very deeply for you and I am very saddened that we did not get to meet here on Earth.

I will see you again though, when all is prepared and He returns for "all" His children, which may be sooner than later, even though no man knows the day.

Hope God allows you to see me now BB....crying over my keyboard.... to know that Shep really does care BB....good night board peace
deemax,

Praise God for the gift of your father! For without him, many lives would go untouched.

He was one of the good guys, always available for an honest, helpful opinion. He will be sorely missed.

Many on this site will be able to recant enumerable posts of helpful advice due to his selflessness, and you'll be able to carry on his legacy as well.

God bless you and your family.

RIP bbscout. angel
When my own father died, I imagined that scene from "Field of Dreams" when the players step out of the cornfield and on to the baseball field... the thought of passing through one life and into another was a comfort to me. I hope that reading all the words of rememberance and gratitude on this thread will bring you similar comfort. Your dad was obviously a man who touched many lives and as the saying goes "It's not what you take with you that matters, but what you leave behind". God bless you and your family.
brett,

i’m sorry for your family’s loss. at the expense of sounding selfish, i’m sorry for baseball’s loss.
dagos and micks aren’t supposed to get along, and one of your dad’s and my first encounters on a discussion forum resulted in us (me at least) calling each other out.
i’m glad it happened, we became friends (internet friends), and i learned a lot (a real lot) of baseball.
although i never met him, i will never forget him.

Demax, Dale, Brett,
As you know first hand your father made friends everywhere he went, but nothing was more important than his family. We first met Doug in Oregon at the Area Code Tryout with our son, he was warm, friendly, great communication skills, organized and when the tryout was over he personally called our son and welcomed him to the WA Nationals Area Code Team. We saved the message for weeks. When we arrived in Long Beach, he spent such quality time with the players and always postive, helpful and full of great advice. What I liked was his ablity to treat everyone with such respect, not just the best players but the team as a whole.
When we spoke he ALWAYS brought the conversation around to how much he loved his family and about what he and his wife did with the grandchildren, about how education was so important to him for his children. Brett at UCLA. Our family is thankful we met Doug, and sad about his passing.
The Richardson's
Deemax,

Your father touched so many people: faceless people like me who read his words and took his advice forward to others. I can't even count the number of times I would start a sentence with.."I read on the HSBBW..." and shared something your dad had written.

I hope that you can find some comfort in the knowledge that he left a tremendous legacy.

You and your family are in our prayers.
I was shocked when Gloveman text messaged me yesterday and gave me the news. I am currently out of town and touch.

Doug will be sorely missed. I will miss his advice and voice of reason. He was always quick to answer a call or pm and his advice was important to me and others. He did what he loved for a living and he was proud of his family and one of the good guys. Rest in peace.

Condolences to the family from the Rideners. He will be remembered

Heartfelt condolences to you and your family. Your father was one of the most respected baseball folks out here on the 'net that I've ever encountered. He was always so helpful to anyone, including PMs, emails, etc.. And unlike many, he always seemed to get his points in w/o belittling other posters. He was truly above that nonsense.

A couple years ago, I even spent some time on the phone w/ him, helping teach him how to post video clips to his webspace, and he was always sincerely grateful for that.

He often would bop into the threads I'd post of my son's (now 12YO) swing. Mostly he'd just say, "Mike, his swing mechanics are well within the guard rails to succeed... just keep throwing him BP and let him get bigger and stronger and he'll be fine". Smile He certainly wasn't one to microanalyze the swing, and having played and scouted at the level he did, as well as the success his sons have had in baseball, I'd like to think he was truly onto something that a lot of us get lost in - keep it simple.

Even though I never met him in person, several times today since I learned of this, he has popped into my head. What a great loss of a great man.

I'm sure he's watching down on his grand kids and the rest of his family. Long live your proud memories.

Regards,
Mike

I am in Hagerstown, Md waching my son Marcos to play this weekend. Although, I noted that the first baseman of his team last name is Mcmillan, I didn't figured that he is your brother Brett. When Marcos told me that the first baseman was home attending his father funeral was when I learned that bbscout's son was my son team mate.
Please extend my condolences to Brett. What a great coincidence, if Shane that was recently signed by the National is asigned to Hagerstown, will be three related HSBASEBALLWEB members playing for the same team in the minorleagues.
Deemax:

As a sporadic poster, I’ve just learned of this news and I’m simply stunned. I traded occasional posts with your father on this and other sites and he was the rarest combination: A straight shooter from the old school with a mind open to everything new and promising. He cut all intellectual bs down to size and I loved him for it.

I hope you gain some measure of comfort from the story that this thread tells – your father was truly loved and his contributions cherished. He was the definition of a baseball man.
Deemax...I am just hearing the news of your father's passing. My heart goes out to you and your family. I knew your Dad only through this website. But he and I became good friends. During several discussions on this website about some pretty sensitive issues, your father would send me a private message and share things with me regarding his personal beliefs and values that he would prefer not to share on a public message board. He was a man of integrity. I was honored that he felt comfortable enough to talk to me. He will be sorely missed. May his soul rest in peace and may the peace of God be with him.

Nats Dedicate Draft To McMillan
Posted Jun. 7, 2007 6:42 pm by Chris Kline
Filed under: Draft Day: June 7

From BA’s Washington correspondent Lacy Lusk:

National crosschecker Chuck LaMar said the club’s draft was dedicated to scout Doug McMillan, who died May 23 of natural causes at age 60, according to reports. McMillan, who scouted the Pacific Northwest and Northern California, worked for the organization for six years. His son Brett is a first baseman at low Class A Hagerstown.
deemax...

With heartfelt sadness of the news about "bbscout", your dad, , their are several websters on the hsbbweb that have earned the utmost respect through the years and bbscout is at "the top" of that list.

Good, friendly advice attracts so many and the mannerisms in which your dad responded in his posts to our websters set a high standard far, far above what the creator of the hsbbweb, Bob Howdeshell, wished us all to address one another in this tone.

deemax, maybe you have noticed the signature on the bottom of my posts. Well, let me tell you, it was your dad and other websters on this wonderful site that caused me to sign my posts in this manner.

Learning day by day on the hsbbweb...

God bless your father, family and friends and may bbscout rest in peace.

Wow I am just stunned. I came by to see what was happening in the draft and saw this sad news.

Deemax - I can't tell you how wonderful your dad was to me and my son as we navigated through the HS and college world of baseball. He always had time for any question and was always willing to go out of his way.

Your dad and your family are in my prayers.
It was these two days of the draft that brought me back to the hsbaseballweb, I was so stunned to read about your dad. I feel like I've lost a wonderful friend and I never met your dad but he was generous and thoughtful with his advice and patient with all of us who were navigating unchartered waters. God called him home and it is much too soon. My family will keep your family in our prayers as you go through this most difficult time. Thank you for sharing your dad with us.

Julie - I just saw the tribute caption you put up to bbscout under the Going Pro heading. Wonderful thoughts and ideas that honors him well.

Everyday when I log on, I look for his screen name to appear and sadly we'll never see it again. It was comforting in knowing we had someone like that as one of our members.

deemax and beemax - your Dad will always be fondly remembered. Someday, you will see him again.
Deemax, I was also shocked and deeply saddened by your loss, our loss. Your dad was kind enough to respond privately to my naive questions, with a professionaly caring demeanor; the baseball questions too embarrasing to ask publicly. He unselfishly benefited folks with the wisdom only gained from living "the life".

I was out of town watching college baseball and off-line when he passed away and several days following. Please accept our belated, but sincerest condolences. We miss you Doug.

I've obviously been away for awhile. I spent a good while till i found this thread.

Some believe each time a loved one who's passed is mentioned or thought of fondly it gives them a little something wherever they are.

Your Dad was class in everything he said and the way he handled it...his opinion and advice were golden
Julie ...

Funny (not ha ha funny) you should make this post ... I was thinking of Doug just the other day, not realizing it has been a year since he passed. There have been several times in the past few weeks where I have felt like saying "Where is bbscout when we need him ???" Always a man of integrity who was not afraid to speak his mind and offer his opinions and valuable advice. Didn't always agree with him, but loved his delivery and his knowledge of the game. It was my great honor to have had the chance to meet him when AJ was in college ... he was always a ray of sunshine, even if he were witnessing a not-so-sunny outing for my son.

I know Doug's family must miss him immensely and I only hope they can take some solace in knowing how much he was loved.

Mary Ann
DOUG;

This weekend my son and I drove south to San Diego for Goodwill Series tryout. This was an 8 hour drive each way from Sonoma County.
During the drive my son, Robert a SSK MLB promotions manager, talked about delivering SSK bats to Dustin Pedroia *Red Sox].

This provided memories of Doug, our Area Code team GM and our personal debate as to the tools of this "young" man. Doug never waived in his projection for Dustin.

When I watch Dustin play, I will always think of Doug and his confidence in Dustin.

Yes this was Doug McMillian, His sons went to Ponderosa, I just was talking to my sons highschool coach and we were just blown away that we won at this time of year. It was special but this made it more special. There was an angel carrying that ball over the fence.I heard both the boys were touched by the win.Life works in such strange, sad and wondeful ways.

I just so happened to be at the game, and I was on the phone with my brother when it happened. An emotional moment for us because we both attended Poderosa and we still have ties there, especially to the coaches. I'm sure my Dad was smiling, and maybe he had something to do with that pitcher throwing an 0-2 fastball down the middleSmile
