#1 Ocean Lakes-7 #6 Cox-6 FINAL

WP-Lambert
LP-Kyriacou

HR-OL:Eure Cox:Bach

In one of the most exciting games of the season, Ocean Lakes prevailed as they came back twice to defeat the Falcons of Cox. After taking an early 1-0 in the bottom of the 1st, Cox fired with 5 unanswered runs of off starter Tyler Clements, 4 coming in the 4th and 1 in the 5th. Zach Bach led the Falcon offense as he fired a 2 run blast in the 4th inning deep to Right Center. Soon after the Dolphin bats would wake up. With two on in the bottom of the 5th, Sammy Eure smashed a shot down the LF line to put the Dolphins to within one, at 5-4. Then in the bottom of the sixth, the Fins were able to push the tying run across to put the score at 5. Reliever Pat Ryan saw little, but productive time on hill in relief of Clements, before giving way to Closer Alex Lambert with 2 out in the top of the 6th.

In the top of the 7th, the Falcons loaded the bases with 2 out in the inning. As Lambert had trouble finding the strike zone, he walked in the go-ahead run to make the score 6-5 in favor of the Falcons. Yet, the Dolphins would prevail once again. In the bottom of the 7th, after a leadoff walk by Sammy Eure, Tyler Clements followed with his first hit of the day, roping a line drive single to CF, bringing Ryan Slater to the plate. After a wild pitch advanced the runners 90 feet, the heroics would begin. Slater would come through with his first hit of the game as well, a see-n-eye single up the middle off of Kyriacou, plating the tying and game winning run, making the final score 7-6 in favor of Ocean Lakes.

The final game was fitting to an exciting and well fought season, as the Dolphins of Ocean Lakes prevailed to complete their Title sweep in winning the Tournament and Reg. Season titles. Congrats to the Dolphins and to Coach Gary Spedden, in winning his 2nd Tournament Title in 3 years.

All my repsects out to OL and Cox for a hard fought and very, very exciting game. Also to Zach Bach, the SS of Cox, what a class act. He came over to congratulate and shake EVERY Ocean Lakes fans hands after the game, letting us all know that we deserved it. Never have I seen a kid with such class, respect and love for the game.

Ocean Lakes will see the field again on Memorial Day, Monday, May 31st, as they take on the Bruins of Western Branch at 1PM at The Bud Metheny Complex on the campus of ODU. Cox will take on the Wildcats of Great Bridge at 7PM. Good luck to both teams as they represent the Beach in the Eastern Region Tournament.

**Also, it was great to buy tickets to see a baseball game, and get a sideshow tap dance as well.**

For those who were not at the game. Lets be fair, he was not all over the place wild as this quote would make it seem. 1 walk was intentional and the other pitches were very, very close and could have gone either way. Personally, I thought he was getting squeezed by the ump. Just my opinion. Just wanted to clear that up.
Baseballer19....my intentions were sarcastic with that quote....if you didn't know, I was one of the few behind home on OL's side not letting up on the blue. I meant to say NO ONE could find the strike zone....cause no one knew where it was exactly....

For everyone to understand, yes, the umpire had changed his zone every half inning it seemed, even screwing the Cox pitching staff several times. He would pick and choose which spots would be a strike, then change it in the same at bat...it was very weird. He even had a couple calls on HBP that were questionable....and even when the pitcher from Cox had a 2 tone glove, he let it slide.

One walk was intentional, yes....but it was issued to Bach. Hahaha. Smartest move of the game.

I too was a neutral observer from the game. Lots of excitement and everyone got their moneys worth. I must say we saw the best and worst of high school sports last evening. I've seen some other postings on here about some of the Cox players and their conduct, spirit, etc. (whatever you want to call it). There were similar things tonight, but not from every Cox player. There are some class acts in that dugout, some very good sportsman.

The OL players were very sportsman-like and professional in the face of a situation where discipline can slide and the raw aggrivation can come through in the wrong way.

But the behavior that caught my eye the most was the conduct and language displayed by a number of OL fans, parents, friends (whichever category they fall into.) These weren't kids, they were adults! The people who should set the example for our young people were harrassing Cox players, coaches, and game officials.

Lets not forget what high school sports is about. Its about building our students into better people through opportunities to practice the skills they will need as productive adults. Its not the world series, its not a chance to live vicariously through a group of 15-18 year olds who want to play a game; its a chance for them to enjoy a part of their youth that for some will come to an end in less than a month.

For those on here who enjoy watching our youth play a wonderful game, continue to go out there, encourage our young people. For those on here that go to the game, act half your age and bring out the worst in sports and society, just stay home. Players, coaches, officials, and real parents and fans will appreciate it.

Ditto. I, too, was a neutral observer, had read all of the postings re the Cox behavior and was attending in the hopes of seeing a good game (which I did.) It was not negative Cox behavior that I observed but exactly what Shenandoah Valley described. So bad that some out-of-district high school players, who had come to watch the game, vacated the OL side because they thought the fans were way overboard with their heckling. Doesn't set a very good example or leave a very good impression.

I also might add that the heckling of the batters had the opposite affect than was sought. The heckling was particularly bad when Cox came to the plate in the top of the 4th. It was humorous watching their answer at the plate: E6 (later thrown out attempting to steal second), double, HR, E4, K, single, single, single and F-8 with the end result that 4 runs scored that inning.

I'm guessing that you are one of those guys that needs to read a rule book.

I read the rule book very regularly; along with other rule publications concerning Federation Baseball and MLB rules. The importance of reading and humility is something I learned long ago from some very good teachers, parents and coaches. Seems like we need a movement within our own baseball community to support our young people in the right ways.

One of those ways is through modeling the behavior he hope them to display as they become our next generation of leaders. If we don't we'll end up with more individuals who enjoy nothing more than to try and show other people up on message boards designed to highlight the accomplishments of young athletes.

Lets keep the focus here people. The achievements of gifted young athletes. Gifted in two major ways: 1. They have the talent to compete at some very high levels and 2. They have the opportunity to do so on a regular basis because of dedicated individuals, like coaches, teachers, administrators, game officials, and parents.
I seem to have started all this.....so I'll end it, or attempt to. The game is over, nothing I, nor anyone can do about it. Everyone knows umps aren't perfect nor can be all the time. It is just part of the game, judgements and etc. So that said.....it was the umpires judgement that the glove was usable. That's his call, not ours to make, though we can always argue it, but what is it going to change, nothing now. So this is over with, good luck to all the teams on Monday!
