I was wondering if folks could identify the best amateur baseball coach they know, and what makes them the best.

I have very limited experience in that I have only been exposed to coaches at the 17-18 level. I have been very fortunate getting to watch so many coaches for so many years. With all due respect to the coaches our teams have faced on the national scene, I have not seen enough of them to form a real detailed opinion.

The best coach I have ever seen is a guy named Jim McCandless. He is currently the varsity coach of Severna Park H.S. (Severna Park, MD), and formerly coached the Severna Park American Legion team for 15 years. Jim gets it done in the four most important categories I believe goes into making a coach (leadership, organization, on field instruction (teaching), managing a game).

(1) Consistently objective and fair-minded.

(2) One who commends respect because he consistently earns/deserves it...and who respects others.

(3) Capacity to recognize the differences among players and willingness/ability to adjust coaching methods to those differences.

(4) Ability to teach the "little things" well.

(5) Unshakeable commitment to player development.
I know what your saying, it's hard to get your point across in a couple of sentences.
Also HS coaches get paid.
Most of your top notch select team coaches get some benefits.
Eather thru there clinics or being payed directly to coach.
So a true Amatuer coach that would be a hard one to pick if you don't know what his status is with the team.
I know my son's 13yr. old select team coach was Lloyd Cherry of Washington State, the best prepared coach, taught the boys to play to the next level. and was a volunteer, he put his heart and soul into it.
and took a bunch of over achievers to the AAU State Championship Finals game. We took second to a very good Seattle Stars team, that went on to win the CABA world championship.
Thats my choice. The EH
Ricky Keith - Carolina Cubs

Ricky gets paid nothing. In fact it cost him a fair amount of money every year. He takes kids every summer and fall and he showcases them around the state of NC SC VA and takes them to PG events. Last year every senior that played signed and is playing in college this season. He has a quiet demeanor and is very humble. He is a teacher of the game and what it takes to move on to the next level. He is loyal to a fault and loves the game. Ive seen him take kids under his wing for three years and then see them move on. He stays in close contact with them even after they move on to school. He shows up at HS games and is always offering words of encouragement. One heck of a great guy.
Coach Z...Chris Zebendon...coached "major league" Babe Ruth for 30 years. Knew every little tidbit there was to know about baseball, threw batting practice until his arm literally almost fell off. Drove a dump truck by day, coached by night. Was at the ball park every night raking fields if he didn't have a game and was always willing to lend a helping hand. I can't even begin to count the number of young lives he impacted.
Charlie "Scottie" Scott. Coached a fall showcase team for about 5 years before taking over the local legion program. Gave of himself and his family. Passionate about the players--and even more passionate about the game. Players will go to battle with him and for him. He runs them after games--hard--if the effort isn't there--and runs WITH THEM. How many coaches to that?
