Well, I held off on my 1500th post thinking I'd have a different announcement to make!! I thought, based on everything that came from admissions, etc., that son's first-choice school (applied EA) was basically a done deal. Nope -- his application has been deferred to the Regular Decision pool. It's a tough academic school, but his stats were in the overall range....he had the highest support from the BB coach as well. Being deferred to RD is a tough road for us because it moves everything back to April 1st, and being overseas it is hard to wait so long to plan a major move, book all tickets, etc. So, there's still hope, but also wondering if the $$ award pool is pretty much drying up by the time they get around to the Regular Decision applications?? This is a top DIII, so no way we can afford it without significant aid, both non-need and need. I don't know what to do now. It's a bit of a heartbreaker because all signals were 'go', and I'm not being delusional. The things that were said to us by the admissions counselor were extremely positive......

HOWEVER,

two days prior to the aforementioned notification, son heard from another top academic DIII and is 'in' with a surprisingly nice overall merit package. He was told by coach here that he'd easily be in the five-man rotation as a freshman. This is a nice option.

So.....

Has anyone else found themselves in a 'deferred' application situation? I know there's still hope, but I do worry that it means $$ will be small if offered at all.......I just don't know.

He wouldn't be the first kid to accept one D-III spot and then change his mind if something better came along. I know some folks think that is not kosher, but it is something lots of non-baseball as well as baseball people do to get a sure thing and still hold out hope for their top choice.

Think of it this way. If he accepts at second choice, then later changes to his first choice if they come through, someone on the waiting list at the second choice school will be made very happy.
This is a non baseball story but may help. Our older son applied EA to a top academic school. This school was his first choice and he had his heart set on getting in. His application was deferred. He was heartbroken. We scrambled to apply to other schools, he was so sure he was going to be admitted to his first choice that he had not thought about the alternative. He applied to 8 other schools. He was accepted RD in March to the school that he loved. He also received a wonderful scholarship and need base grant. He was also accepted at every other school that he applied to . He is now a senior at his first choice. I am telling you this because if your son has the SAT's and the grades to get in to this first choice it can happen. Have you spoken to the coach?
He should be able to give you an idea about what is going on.
This is a bittersweet process, tough on the kids and tough on the parents. Does he like the second option? sounds like a good option. But I know that feeling when they ( and you) have your heart set on one place. It's like a love affair. There was nothing I could say to my son at the time to make him feel any different. It takes time when you have your heart broken.
Funny thing is, as a senior now, he would probably say that if he had it to do over he would have gone to a different school! He has gotten a great education and lots of money but he looks at things differently at 21 than he did at 17.
I know something good is going to happen for your son. Keep us posted.
Thanks for all the advice. After a couple days of "Whatchu Talkin' 'bout, Willis?", we are back in gear (when the chain slips, you stop, put it back on, and start riding again = our cyclist's analogy of the situation!). We sat down, mom, son, and I, and devised strategies to:

a) do everything possible to enhance his application to Choice #1 so that even if it comes to nothing, son can feel like he did everything he could and walk away clean.

b) be grateful for the opportunity that DOES exist at the other school and be happy that he will play college baseball, one way or the other, at a school that fits his criteria for size, programs, etc (this is a very nice school, by the way, and the more son looks at it in this new light, the more he likes it)

c) identify and plan a contact campaign for 6-8 other schools where he feels confident he will be challenged academically (within reason!) AND play baseball. This is the tough one, because no one will see him play and we're relying on a couple of respected people in the States who've seen him to help us out with recommendations....also trying to get him in front of the Phillies scout (Rivera) who is over here scouting Korea as an added reference. Shooting new video next week. Some new schools are emerging that we hadn't looked at before....son's excitement in 'the chase' is coming alive again....

Again, thank you for all your help and advice. This is what makes the HSBBWeb so amazing!

gimages, our son played in the SCAC so we are pretty familiar, historically, with Hendrix.
ILVBB's son is currently playing in the SCAC and competes against Hendrix.
You can also send a PM to double2thegap, who is a member and posts. He played for Hendrix and coached after graduating.
Plenty of resources for you, two of whom are from CA.
