From what I've seen the Regional differences are huge in Baseball.  Some of these Northeast D1's are really only D1 because they are D1 in other sports.  Not to rip on a program, but Villanova, for example, does not appear to put forth a lot of effort in attempting to field a strong program.  I don't believe they fully fund their scholarship allotment.  When I watched them a year ago, I felt as if they were on par with the California D3 teams from the SCIAC.

Villanova wouldn't destroy them at steady diet of the top local D3's but they would win the vast majority and if you stacked up the games Nova would dominate at the bottom of the rotations. Villanova isn't good, the top local D3's are.

There is a difference and I am a big fan of the local D3 circuit.

I have seen no evidence from national play that the California D3's are any better then the midatlanitc / northeast ones. There are national caliber teams, within the driving distance for nonleague games in all directions of Philly.

Villanova isn’t that bad. But they’re not good. Now that my son is turning 26 and I moved I’m less tuned in. But they used to have two or three players drafted each year. But they were a Big East bottom feeder when the Big East was a P6.

Their field is in a town park ten miles from campus. There aren’t any concession stands or bathrooms. I heard they only fund six scholarships.

Basketball and track are the big sports along with FCS football.

I was just giving a talk at Bradley University ... which is a very small D1 school with not a huge amount of money to spend on scholarships.

One of my hosts is a huge college sports fan, as am I so we started talking the advantages and disadvantages of  being a small, underfunded  bottom feeding D1 vs being a competitive D3.

He said he'd been urging the powers that be to switch to D3 in sports for years, but to no avail. (he's been on various committees at the school that have input into such matters.)

The powers that be HOPE  that somehow basketball  (they don't do football)  will be a source of TV revenue and national interest, if they can just manage to dominate their league ... which includes last year's Cinderella team Loyola.  The basketball team did make the tournament, but went one and done.

My hosts thinks it's  a bad bet for the school, overall.  Especially since they suffer from declining enrollments, have a small endowments, and are heavily tuition dependent.

He thinks they would be better off using D3 sports to attract more paying customers and should  aim to be a highly competitive D3 program at which students will "pay to play."

I wonder how many bottom feeder D1 programs face this kind of choice and whether some of them will eventually opt for the D3 route .... mainly to keep those tuition dollars flowing.

I'm sure it gets better than this for both teams, but man this is ugly from start to finish. This is one of the very conferences RJM was referring to. I'm fairly confident a good D3 can take some D1s out now.

It’s not the one I was referring to specifically. It’s the other one. That’s Coppin State’s field. Look at the field. I’ll bet plenty of sons of posters played on nicer high school fields.

But, I’ll give the Coppin State coach credit. He came on board when they went 0-50 with a 16+ era and a .160 team batting average. A couple of years later they only had fourteen players. Then they could only play thirty-something games as they had trouble getting out of conference games. Regardless of the level of play they have a full roster and a winning record this season.

Just like players sometimes making a bad decision choosing a D1 over a D3 for perceived prestige reasons I think college athletic departments sometimes make the same mistake.

Speaking of prestigious progams did the Sprint Center have to be deloused after Calipari and Pearl coached against each other today? That’s a lot of slime on the sidelines at the same time.

To offset the high Calipari & Pearl skeeve factor, the Sprint Center staff was seen handing out complimentary Purell showers for its patrons.

Yes, credit to them. I can't imagine recruiting being too easy down there, but good to see them winning some games. Very good chance they're a tournament team this year.

I have never seen any D1 baseball that looks like that!

You don’t remember seeing D1 play like that. I remember MLB play like that because it was my team. A couple of years ago I watched the Red Sox clear the bases with three errant throws on one play. The ball banged off both the right field and left field walls.,

This is a MEAC conference game, and those are two of the teams I referred to earlier. It's a rough clip, and I don't think it's representative of the conference in general. However, like I said earlier, MEAC teams would not be out of place in many D3 conferences.

A current junior throwing 92 with no offers?   Can at he at least throw it where the catcher can catch it 2 out of 5 times?

Yes sir.  Actually a dominant pitcher.  Here's the issue...   he's 5'11" - maybe.

I've been to 20 or so of my son's games so far this year....I think I've only seen 3 guys over 90...and one of them is on our team.  Hard to believe, that even at 5'11 that someone hasn't offered him.  My son was 88-89 when he committed the summer after his junior year.  He was 5'9 or 5'10 and maybe 150 lbs at the time.

And he's a great student!   The 92 is showcase verified.  No saying when weather warms he may not go 93 or 94.  It's a stone cold mystery to me.  But I am sure this summer the offers will come.

Errant throws happen at all levels of baseball.  I was referring to the general lack of athleticism, idiotic base running, terrible execution of a rundown, and the catcher tripping the baserunner.  To see all that in such a short clip is what prompted my comment.

You mean the baserunner intentionally running into the catcher and flopping right?
