So, any ideas? Who do you think would win week one?

Utah over Texas (There has to be an upset somewhere and I just don't like Texas for some reason)

Last year either Yahoo or CBS Sports created the ability to create brackets and play a simulated playoff online. Maybe it will come back this year.

You ALMOST got it right. SC would beat OU by 14+.
Both Penn State and USC played Ohio State and Oregon State this year.
Using BC S logic and my computer, Penn State should be favored to beat USC in the Rose Bowl by 12 points. Anyone want to bet?

Maybe I'm missing something--didn't the alleged #1 team just play the alleged #2 team this past Saturday? And #2 won-last week of season-why play another game? Oh, I see, let's pick another #2 team to play #1. And so on and so on and so on.

Beezer...I'm of the opinion USC a little over rated. Clearly they are good, but they have not played anyone with the team speed of OU or Florida this year. That would neutralize, a little, that defense of SC's. SC's certainly no scoring machine on offense. Matchup wise, they just don't match up as well against FLA or OU as they would against say, Texas (but I'm not sure SC could score much on Texas).

No wonder he got fired. Tyrone Willingham, on his way out at Washington, had Missouri bizarrely ranked, placing them at 11th despite four losses. He has them just a spot below Texas Tech and six spots ahead of an Oklahoma State team that beat them in Columbia.
Still a goofball. Howard Schnellenberger apparently doesn’t buy all the hype about Southern Cal’s defense. The Florida Atlantic coach has USC at No. 8.

He politics non-stop but still casts a reasonable vote. Some have criticized Mack Brown for campaigning too much for his Texas team. But it’s hard to say he wasn’t a gentleman on his ballot. The UT coach gave the top spot to Florida, putting his team second and Oklahoma third.
What...Utah ahead of SC? Florida coach Urban Meyer put his team at the top, then Oklahoma, Alabama, Texas and Utah — a nod to his former team. Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham also ranked his Utes fifth.

Interesting points there Tex. But you seem to be off in a couple kinda key areas.
- They are part of the Pac 10 which is known to have teams loaded with speed. The Pac 10 may be down this year but they're not slow
- The last time I recall USC being referred to as "over rated" they faced Oklahoma. This year's OU is WAY better though and I think it would be a good game.
- They may not light up the scoreboard vs Texas, Oklahoma or Florida but I don't think any of them have faced a defense the likes of USC's either.
EDIT - they were "over rated" against Texas and that ESPN droolfest flat out drove me crazy!!! It reminded me of the old SNL Ditka ("Da Bears") skits.

If USC played Utah in a bowl game, I would spot Utah 21 points and USC would still win comfortably. I've watched Utah...no offense...just not in the same league as the top handful. They are in the same category as TCU...nice club, but how did they do against one of the top handful (OU).
Beezer...one thing you can count on USC for almost every year is to lose to a clearly inferior team in Pac 10 somewhere along the way....a conference not even close to on par with the Big 12 and SEC. I say overrated from a standpoint of people mentioning them in the same breath as Texas, Florida and Oklahoma.

You're very likely right. And USC may well win 10 out of 10 times. (And OU may well win the next 9, or 900, against Boise State.) However, there are those times...
That's why I'll be cheering for the Utes when they take on 'Bama. The odds are against them...and 'Bama could just run them off the field...but...there are those times...

Having spent 20 years in SEC country, I'm afraid you may well be right. (Hope springs eternal though!) Saban has 'Bama looking as good as they have in a long time, and the MWC is nowhere near the quality of the SEC. I have no illusions...worst-case I'd want it to be close. The reality may be quite different...
