Went to Wrigley yesterday and really enjoyed a couple of the shops out on the street. There is an incredible amount of merchandise meant to look like the "old days." One shop had some old jerseys and a great photo of kids climbing a tree to see over the outfield wall at Wrigley, probably back in the 20s or so. (clearly NOT a World Series game!)

Anyway, my 14 year old son and I were talking about how baseball is the best sport because it has the longest history. He mentioned how neat the old time mitts were...the two-finger gloves, round catcher's mitts, etc.

He'll turn 15 in October and I'd love to get him one or two for his birthday for display in his room. I find some on eBay but not sure they're what I'm looking for. Does anyone know of a good site for these things?

I don't really want to pay for a Lou Gehrig model, just want one from the era. Any ideas?

Thanks.

This isn't a specific answer, but follow Uni Watch. There's auctions with uniforms and/or equipment that are mentioned quite frequently.
Best thing I've done is hit up garage sales and antique stores.

I've found 2 gloves from the 30/40's, both three finger and one from the 50's that looks more "normal" by today's standards but you can still see the "oldness" in the design and pattern.

All three were very reasonably priced, and with those venues you can even barter some.
Just an idea...

Start with an old mitt. Acquire a few more old things piecemeal- ticket stubs, cards, dirty baseball, pennant, b/w autographed photo, program, newspaper clippings... It can be based around his favorite player, a specific team, or time period. Those things can be reasonably affordable. You don't hve buy everything all at once. It's more fun as an ongoing father-son project, kinda like a train set- one of these for Christmas, one of those for birthdays. Use your imagination.(you have a good one) Put 'em all together in a shadow box. When he's grown up, he'll be able to take it with him, maybe pass it on to his kids.
