California is proposing to allow college athletes to be paid for their name, image, or likeness.  This bill if passed and executed would cause California Colleges to become ineligible for NCAA playoffs according to Mark Emmert.  How would this affect the NCAA landscape?

A bill can be passed allowing payment. But it doesn’t mean the colleges have to follow. NCAA participation is a cash cow they’re not walking away from. However, if the bill passes its exposure may reheat the discussion and eventually make something happen involving compensation.** The problem is in the big picture compensation is very complicated. There are so many moving parts.

** Bill Dodd (D-Napa) said he initially had reservations about the bill, he now believes it appropriately positions California to be a leader in pressing for national change. “What we’re doing," he said, "is setting a marker.
